plorg··on Trump says Venezuela’s Maduro captured after strikes
Given Rubio's role, "communism bad" seems the most coherent explanation. He's been on this beat for a long time.
plorg··on Flock Exposed Its AI-Powered Cameras to the Internet. We Tracked Ourselves
Gary has some unhinged politics with regards to "public safety" even excepting the Flock boosterism.
plorg··on The U.S. Is Funding Fewer Grants in Every Area of Science and Medicine
This is not how research grants work.
plorg··on The biggest CRT ever made: Sony's PVM-4300
In the late aughts I worked a summer at a company that was designing an articulating (flat screen) TV mount. I went with the engineers to one of the Intertek testing sessions. We wanted it to be rated for a 60" TV, but I was given the impression that the weight formulas they used for testing were based on CRT screens. The salesperson who came with us was giddy seeing the thing loaded up with 1000lb of steel plates and not giving way, but the actuators could not lift and our advertised rating was not more than 200lb.
plorg··on Amazon will allow ePub and PDF downloads for DRM-free eBooks
It's not exactly nothing, but it's a pretty small change . Some publishers sell DRM-free on other platforms, and to be honest I was under the impression Amazon used to allow this in the past as well.

Of course if they really believed in the concept they would publish their own works DRM-free, but that would conflict with the business model of the publishing arm.

plorg··on Mozilla appoints new CEO Anthony Enzor-Demeo
I found it unnecessary and annoying, but there was a toggle for it in the settings, it wasn't even hard to find.
plorg··on alpr.watch
Surely there is a difference berween "surveiling" records of institutional actors that answer to the public and dragnet tracking of individuals operating in their private capacity.
plorg··on DeepSeek uses banned Nvidia chips for AI model, report says
More like it's okay for one store to steal from another if they can offer you better prices.
plorg··on A supersonic engine core makes the perfect power turbine
I think you're missing the point. Once we've bruteforced the computer god into being he will absolve us of all the sins of destroying the place we live and magically create for us a utopia of so much free energy that we won't have to worry about having an atmosphere.
plorg··on A supersonic engine core makes the perfect power turbine
It's also a kind of ideological signpost.

plorg··on YouTube caught making AI-edits to videos and adding misleading AI summaries
If any engineers think that's what they're doing they should be fired. More likely it's product managers who barely know what's going on in their departments except that there's a word "AI" pinging around that's good for their KPIs and keeps them from getting fired.
plorg··on Autism should not be treated as a single condition
Perhaps this is just a different mental model thing, but in a spectrum each of those colors would be, maybe, a frequency of light or maybe even a range of frequencies measured at different intensities. Autism might be thought of as a band in the larger spectrum (think of the infrared or ultraviolet spectrums as subsets of the electromagnetic spectrum), and any one person might emit a different spectrum, like a combination of these different colors. An autistic person, specifically, would exhibit higher intensities in that named spectrum, and conversely the spectrum is identified as a part of the larger spectrum of human experience where people often show similar combinations of colors.

It's always going to be a metaphor, but that's the way that I best understand it.

plorg··on A Cozy Mk IV light aircraft crashed after 3D-printed part was weakened by heat
And in fact the owner was not the person who installed the part!
plorg··on A Cozy Mk IV light aircraft crashed after 3D-printed part was weakened by heat
The report further states that the part included in the original design (part of the kit) was made of a carbon fiber composite where the epoxy had a listed glass transition temperature of 84⁰C. If there is an element to be critical of along these lines it's that the part as originally designed is supposed to include an aluminum tube at one end that may stiffen the part - the report makes no conclusions whether it truly would have, but notes that the actual glass transition temperature was found to be much lower than listed, and lower than that of the epoxy used in the original design.
plorg··on Bootloader Unlock Wall of Shame
After I got the screen replaced on my previous phone the fingerprint reader didn't show up, and I didn't bother to try fixing it. I hadn't specifically requested a new panel with fingerprint reader, but supposedly it could be enabled, if available, through tools Google provides for Pixels with their Tensor chips. Apps that would otherwise use the biometric authentication can fall back to a pin or pattern, but all of my banking or work benefit-related apps will not save credentials in that case, so I have to rely on my password manager which will use the PIN/pattern for authentication.

I replaced that phone with a new one and didn't bother setting up the fingerprints. It doesn't seem to bother me too much and maybe there's some small security benefit to not having the biometric authentication enabled.

plorg··on Slop Detective – Fight the Slop Syndicate
Clicking through 4 examples I found it hard to understand even what I was looking at. All 4 appeared to just be garbage that a human could get Canva to shit out in a couple of minutes, but the features that put them in the AI Slop bucket were things that identified the "slop", not the AI.
plorg··on In a U.S. First, New Mexico Opens Doors to Free Child Care for All
Might as well complain about how we get free roads and fire services.
plorg··on Private Equity's New Venture: Youth Sports
Youth sports have been moving in this direction since long before sports gambling was a meaningful economic force in the US at least. I attended both a high school and a college that started football programs while I was a student because the leadership thought it was necessary to maintain enrollment.
plorg··on Loose wire leads to blackout, contact with Francis Scott Key bridge
I think it reads as too cute by a half. The wire was just the one of dozens of problems that happened last. It's natural to attribute cause in that way, but it's not really helpful in communicating the purpose of these investigations.

If this represents a change in style and/or substance of these kinds of press releases, my hunch would be that the position was previously hired for technical writers but was most recently filled by PR.

plorg··on Loose wire leads to blackout, contact with Francis Scott Key bridge
That seems like a difference between the report and the press release. I'm sure it doesn't help that the current administration likes quick, pat answers.

The YouTube animation they published notes that this also wasn't just one wire - they found many wires on the ship that were terminated and labeled in the same (incorrect) way, which points to an error at the ship builder and potentially a lack of adequate documentation or training materials from the equipment manufacturer, which is why WAGO received mention and notice.

plorg··on Cities panic over having to release mass surveillance recordings
They may feel (or their counsel may suggest) that it presents more of a legal risk than it's worth. A prudent city government would have evaluated this before installing such equipment, but maybe we can be generous and imagine that being subject to such litigation revealed a mismatch between their legal evaluation and the judiciary's.
plorg··on I think nobody wants AI in Firefox, Mozilla
Can I dismiss that distracting little pip without having to click through a tutorial for every new feature? Can I just turn this off?

This is especially irritating when, say, you set up a new phone and the app treats you as if you've never used it before.

plorg··on Fighting the New York Times' invasion of user privacy
As in every other dealing, OpenAI would have you believe they are so important that they are exempt from the legal discovery process.
plorg··on SanDisk launches dongle-like Extreme Fit USB-C flash drive with up to 1 TB
And not for nothing, the SSDs that GP is describing are exactly this - NVME sticks with a USB/Thunderbolt interface and some kind of usually aluminum enclosure with a layer of thermal conductive material.
plorg··on YouTube is taking down videos on performing nonstandard Windows 11 installs
I'm coming here from a follow up post. I would find it difficult to follow a YouTube version of these instructions, but I might resort to searching for it because it is much easier to find this kind of information on YouTube than through a search engine, whose results are hopelessly polluted by LLM spam that has the deficiencies of often being just subtley wrong enough as to void it's usefulness, misrepresenting chronology in a way that makes it difficult to identify the up-to-date methods, and answering questions that are popular and easy to answer over ones that are difficult or unsolved, while failing to identify the difficult problem or its sticking point.
plorg··on Fire TV: Amazon to block piracy apps in the future
I have some pretty aggressive filters on Firefox/uBO, and relaxing my dynamic filters as much as I can conveniently this page still loads blank. It's not worth digging any further to figure out what's getting in the way (I'm assuming something in a static filter list)
plorg··on Microsoft in court for allegedly misleading Australians over 365 subscriptions
Better yet, pursue structural remedies. Break up or shut down bad actors.
plorg··on Armed police swarm student after AI mistakes bag of Doritos for a weapon
I can't say that I think it would be a saner world to have the equivalent of a teacher or hall monitor sitting in on every conversation, even if that computer chaperone isn't going to automatically involve the cops. I don't think you can build a better society where everyone is expected to speak and behave defensively in every circumstance as if their words could be taken out of context by a snitch - computer or otherwise.
plorg··on Criticisms of “The Body Keeps the Score”
I would take any scientific claims touted on HN with a grain of salt - there are plenty claims associated with overlapping orthodoxies and heterodoxies being presented all the time.
