plorg··on Data centers in space makes no sense
So it's a Zone in search of a use case?
plorg··on PlayStation 2 Recompilation Project Is Absolutely Incredible
I took it as a comment on the economics of RAM, but I think the current state is transitory (does AI continue apace? Prices will eventually justify more competitors, even at tremendous startup cost. AI crashes? More RAM for the proles)
plorg··on Dole Kemp 96 Web Site
I got the snapshot to load and it appears that at that point it was being sat on by scammy domain parkers, complete with promises of scandalous celebrity photos and dick pills.
plorg··on Dole Kemp 96 Web Site
The current domain registration also dates to 2003 and as someone lower in the thread notes the current owner is connected to "4president.org".

I'm having trouble accessing old snapshots, though. The Internet Archive has one as far back as April 1, 2000, but the snapshot viewer has been giving 503 errors all morning.

plorg··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
You keep saying this, but there actually is a legal standard for this, and following people around, yelling at them, none of that is interference with public acts.
plorg··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
These "undercover" reporters have screenshots, surely they could show one of actual crimes instead of something that you keep willfully misinterpreting as such. We've already given you the mundane explanation, but it seemingly relies too much on people being able to work together as social creatures and not enough on a technological system.

What this reads as is a bunch of credulous X users trying to one-up each other and looking for reasons that Trump and his cronies are not once again lying to your face.

It is neither necessary nor particularly useful for them to be running plates for reasons you've already identified.

plorg··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
The "interfering" this are describing is your framing. You want it to be interference in a legally actionable way, but it simply isn't.
plorg··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
The crowd sourced lists don't identify the owners of the vehicles, because that does not matter. They identify vehicles that ICE is using, and "likely a rental" is one good signal.
plorg··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
I know you want to frame it a different way, but the articles you are posting don't describe anything that's illegal.
plorg··on Ice Drives Unmarked Cars. This Public Database Tracks Their License Plates
Hell, with the way they're using them as weapons and abandoning them any self respecting rental company should be dropping them as customers anyways.
plorg··on Ice Drives Unmarked Cars. This Public Database Tracks Their License Plates
Other public reporting notes that the system used, while heuristic in some cases, includes multiple different kinds of ICE ~oracles, so just seeing a rental car isn't enough for anyone to treat a vehicle as "confirmed" anyways.
plorg··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
It appears to be primarily getting agents into the chats. To me the questionable conduct is their NPSM-7-adjacent redefining of legal political categories and activities as "terrorists/-ism" for the purpose of legal harassment or worse. Whether that is technically legal or not it should be outrageous to the public.
plorg··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
I don't know what they think they're doing there. If the most interesting thing they found was the public website leading to a fundraising platform for mutual aid a) there is literally nothing illegal there, and b) you can find that website linked to publicly by conservatively 25% of the twin cities population. It's literally the most prominent fundraising website anyone has been posting.
plorg··on FBI is investigating Minnesota Signal chats tracking ICE
Journalists doing ride alongs have already identified the system and it doesn't really on "restricted databases", they rely on observation and multiple attestation. In any case, there are indeed commercial services for looking up license plate data, and they rely on watching the notices that are published when you register your vehicle. It's the same reason why you receive all sorts of scammy warranty "notices" when you buy a car.

In fact the first clue that they look for is having Illinois Permanent plates because that is a strong indicator that they are using rental vehicles. That doesn't take a database, it's just a strong signal that can be confirmed by other evidence.

plorg··on TikTok users can't upload anti-ICE videos. The company blames tech issues
Another great way to do this would be to preemptively arrest your political enemies with a pretext of assumed fraud and use that as a fishing expedition. Then you could spread your retribution by trying to violently suppress anyone who got in your way and use that as a pretext to send in the army to raid some billionaires' compounds.

* It assumes that the government's priorities are malleable enough that it will eventually decide to prioritize these laws, but not malleable enough that they could change them. This is self-contradictory.

* It assumes that a person's immigration status is not malleable and cannot be normalized. This is strictly false.

* It assumes that immigration laws are static. Again, strictly false.

* It implies that all force is equal in violence, which is something I usually only hear from high schoolers who have just encountered libertarianism and love it

* It suggests that there is no moral agency in acting on behalf of the government, only in acting against the backdrop reality of this monolithic slab of granite.

* It suggests even that the violence currently taking place is for the purpose of enforcing laws. This isn't true for the U.S. citizens by birth or naturalization who are being unlawfully detained, it isn't true for the thousands of non-citizens with legal status who are being detained and moved across state lines. It isn't true for the non-citizens who are being arrested literally while attending the process of maintaining their legal status. It isn't even true for those without legal status who are having their doors kicked in without warrants, and it isn't true for those without legal status who are being detained and tortured. None of this is actually according to the law, it's just what they can get away with and make a spectacle of violence.

I'm not even exactly clear who the nebulous group of people is that you want to blame for getting people caught up in the government's violence. I guess if you're mad at coyotes, sure, be my guest? If you're mad at anyone involved in the process of asylum you're mad at people following the law. If you're mad at people helping their neighbors you've lost the plot. If you're mad at state or city governments not enforcing federal laws for then either you don't like federalism or you don't understand it, but at best your assumption is historically contentious.

plorg··on DuckDuckGo is asking for a Yes or No vote on AI
It's effectively a push poll, and it's not changing anything about DuckDuckGo. They really want you to know that Yes AI or No AI, we gotchu dude, you can do whatever.
plorg··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
Everything you write here assumes that the world is far more rigid and full of inevitability than can be justified.
plorg··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
Trying to decide how to categorize those giant first page threads from 2022 where Brian Armstrong would complain about activist employees or Google employees would stage walkouts about their employer doing contracts with the Department of Defense, the comments would be chock full of "yeah, actually a company should fire those employees, because business isn't about politics" then a few years later Coinbase drops $150M on the elections and Google is happily working with Palantir to build dragnet surveillance of US citizens.
plorg··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
This rests on the assumption that the government has to respond with violence.
plorg··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
There have been some insane politics (especially "culture war" stuff) that got laundered through the HN "reasonable discussion" filter, especially from 2021 through 2024. They still come up all the time. HN loves talking about politics when the commenters can get critical mass to grind the libertarian or "anti-woke" axe.

Not to mention every leader of YCombinator has had some kind of wild politics that come from having money that separates you from any kind of consequence.

plorg··on The Palantir app helping ICE raids in Minneapolis
Palantir would be evil even if Karp was, like, woke or something.
plorg··on Ford F-150 Lightning outsold the Cybertruck and was then canceled for poor sales
My pitch to the people near me who have no connection to the auto industry is that an electric Ranger (90's style) would have been a huge hit. I get the feeling that the Lightning came about because Ford managers don't really know how to make vehicles that regular people want.

I have a 20-year-old hard plastic gaming mouse pad I use at home and it's terrific. At work I have some promotional neoprene covered pad with a terrible Qi charger on one side. The mouse pad similarly works great. The biggest annoyance I have with these things is that I have replaced the switches on all of them, the process of which tends to destroy the skates. None of the replacement skate kits ($10, highway robbery) on eBay or Amazon or whatever include the thick adhesive like the originals, and all the foam tape I can find is too thick, so I've taken to building up layers of double sided tape until they are both even and proud of the recesses in the mouse. This isn't exactly a criticism of Logitech except that they could absolutely sell repair parts for their peripherals and they don't.
plorg··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I can't say I like the 604 from looking at it, but that's a pretty surface level judgment and I'd have to use it to really compare. For my purposes a rechargeable mouse that lasts more than a day is fine because I'm using this at work and I just plug it in when I leave. Having a replaceable rechargeable battery also means if it starts running out of juice before one day I can just pop in a new battery and it'll be good for a couple more years.
plorg··on The struggle of resizing windows on macOS Tahoe
I loved my Performance MX. I finally had to replace it at work (software wouldn't install after migrating to Windows 11) and the MX Master 3 I got seems much ergonomically worse to me. I also am not a fan of the thumb wheel replacing buttons. Only thing I won't complain about is that the resolution is better. From testing my coworkers' mouses (older Masters) I'm pretty sure they have each been a step downhill from my perspective.

My sister in law gave me her G700S to fix the main button microswitches, and she convinced me that it's the apotheosis of the design - it's what should have replaced the Performance MX. No soft-touch plastic, extra buttons, and the higher resolution sensor. I'll probably have to get one off eBay.

Edit: also all of the Masters have non-user-replaceable batteries.

plorg··on ICE Is Going on a Surveillance Shopping Spree
The immigration laws of this country still require, on the paper that most of trusted until not so long ago, due process, which ICE are flagrantly violating, to include "arresting"(kidnapping) people following the written law to gain citizenship and cancelling the programs that people have been living under for decades that granted them legal non-citizenship status.

You can call that "enforcing the law" once you admit that the "law" is, at this point, the whim of a despot and his cronies

plorg··on ICE Is Going on a Surveillance Shopping Spree
We're well past the point that they should be, I would be more concerned their descendants won't be, based on, let's say the last 250 years of this national experiment.
plorg··on Dude, where's my supersonic jet?
The author of this slop seems to believe Boom's pitch deck that they can use AI to only boom into space and thus do supersonic overland. The only thing his article suggests though is that you could do it under certain atmospheric conditions, and more likely this is just cover for "do it all the time and blame the computer when we rattle peoples' windows".
