plmpsu··on Gradle Is Javamaxxing
Gradle is really powerful if you know what you're doing and you take the time and effort to keep your build optimized, sane, and working. I recently built a Gradle plug-in that allows us to build native components on a remote system (z/OS) and integrate these tasks and artifacts with the native Gradle model so that Gradle takes care of caching and parallel task execution. I'm sure this is possible with other build tools as well, though, but the Gradle model fit our use case nicely.

I think any complicated build system will eventually devolve regardless of the build tool if it's not properly maintained; the variability of the required tasks is just too high.

Gradle does seem to be moving fast with regards to Java support in general changes and improvements in the build tool. It takes effort to keep up, but it's worthwhile.

And what about copilot?
plmpsu··on Samsung Overtakes Apple for Top Smartphone Customer Satisfaction
I agree. Bet apparently most other people don't.
plmpsu··on Claude.ai unavailable and elevated errors on the API
Going for a walk is a good idea even when there's no outage.
plmpsu··on Yann LeCun says Dario Amodei "knows nothing about AI effects on jobs"
Honestly, I can say the same thing about some of my coworkers.
plmpsu··on How Complex is my Code?
Sonar and PMD also have the notion of Cognitive Complexity for code.

That's what I would say regardless of if I was considering paying or not.
plmpsu··on AI assistance when contributing to the Linux kernel
it makes sense to keep track of what model wrote what code to look for patterns, behaviors, etc.
plmpsu··on Help Keep Thunderbird Alive
I wish I could use Thunderbird at work now that it has Exchange support . Unfortunately we're mandated to use Microsoft Outlook. Outlook feels like it has completely been forgotten by Microsoft. I don't recall the last time they updated anything meaningful in the product (at least on macOS), it's quite a mess of a product. Wishing Thunderbird all the best it's the competition we need.

Works just fine here on FF on Android.
plmpsu··on 25 Years of IntelliJ Idea
As opposed to the subpar software quality produced these days by the big tech companies (who even knows if Microsoft Outlook for macOS even has a functional product team), JetBrains have been continuously delivering new features and innovations in their products in ways which make my work and life better and easier.

I have been using JetBrains products since 2003, and it's rare to encounter such a long-term commitment to quality and users in software in the corporate space.

A new IntelliJ quarterly release is still something to be excited about since it solves real problems for developers.

plmpsu··on How geometry is fundamental for chess
I found this article very interesting.

I would've also appreciated a discussion of how intuition of geometry might apply to chess playing abilities and how it might not be sufficient for playing chess well.

As a side note, I appreciated the small typos as a further signal that this was written by a human.

I miss her.
plmpsu··on Show HN: Diagram as code tool with draggable customizations
I really wish PlantUML would just solve this jarring problem.
plmpsu··on Mac Source Ports – Run old games on new Macs
FAQ says:

"[...] a source port is just the executable code for the game, you still have to provide your own copy of the game's data.

So for example, using Quake III: Arena again, the game consists of both an executable and a set of data files (pk3 files, in this case). The download for ioquake3 is an executable that is up to date and has been maintained to work on modern Macs, but you still need to acquire the pk3 files from a legal source, such as an existing installation of the game from disc or Steam or GOG."

plmpsu··on Dbos: Durable Workflow Orchestration with Go and PostgreSQL
What did your team decide to go with eventually?
plmpsu··on Dbos: Durable Workflow Orchestration with Go and PostgreSQL
Thanks for the reply.

So applications continuously poll the database for work? Have you done any benchmarking to evaluate the throughput of DBOS when running many workflows, activities, etc.?

plmpsu··on Dbos: Durable Workflow Orchestration with Go and PostgreSQL
How does DBOS scale in a cluster? with Temporal or Dapr Workflows, applications register running their supported workflows types or activities and the workflow orchestration framework balances work across applications. How does this work in the library approach?

Also, how is DBOS handling workflow versioning?

Looking forward for your Java implementation. Thanks

plmpsu··on Arctic zombie viruses in Siberia could spark terrifying new pandemic, scientists
Evolution is not necessarily linear. Theoretically, it's possible for a virus to die out after which the host's defenses against that virus would be pruned by evolution due to them harming fitness (no use for them anymore while still costing energy).
