plicense··on Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace
I think you can specify the VPN server. I do it all the time and never let it auto-pick.

Keyboard and other minor equipment acquiring process is also fixed/streamlined now. Its much more self-service and does not require standing in queue or getting manager approval.

And on top of all, the one thing I really respect/revere at Amazon are the builder tools. They are probably the best I've seen so far! And yeah, this is probably today and I've heard it was bad a few years back.

But I can relate to working on weekends though. That still remains.

plicense··on Tabula: Extract Tables from PDFs
How does it read data from the PDF? Is there a PDF parser somewhere down inside the code?
plicense··on Show HN: Image Processing for Everybody
Ah yes CMD would be better! Thanks!

It was not in the tutorial as well. The tutorial says "Drag with the right mouse button..."

plicense··on Show HN: Image Processing for Everybody
Also, how do you connect processes in Mac?
plicense··on Ask HN: $8k on AWS in August for you, any interesting computations?
You know it pains me to see you ask for resources. Everyday at work, my team uses a couple r3.4x large and c4.8x large for trivial tasks. My team does not realize how valuable a resource they are accessing(and wasting) everyday. I wish I can donate those to you, but company policy forbids me to.
plicense··on Ex-Googler says she exposed company-wide pay inequality with spreadsheet
I live in India - and work for one of the tech giants. Our entire team is split into two - one part in the US and the other here in India. We both do the similar amount of work, in fact the estimates our managers give out for upcoming projects are like 25-50% lesser than the ones in US. Yet, we get paid 1/10th of their annual salary. Not that I complain, just comparing the wage differences!
plicense··on Ex-Googler says she exposed company-wide pay inequality with spreadsheet
Lol, coming to think of it, 7x$150 is my monthly pay!
plicense··on Amazon API Gateway – Build and Run Scalable Application Backends
Well, you are still free to write resource consuming operations and deploy it to an EC2 instance and call it from Amazon Gateway. Lambda is just an example.

Moreover I feel Lambda can do pretty good stuff. I am sure it will integrate with other AWS services pretty soon and once there is connectivity to an RDS instance, then it solves the use case for half the developer population out there.

plicense··on AWS CodeCommit
That's not just it. They are planning to add post-receive hooks. Imagine doing a commit and writing a post-commit hook to auto-deploy to appropriate hosts or spawn up an EC2 instance to run integration tests.
plicense··on I self-published a learn-to-code book and made nearly $5k in pre-orders
You can actually add videos to your Kindle book and sell it for a higher price. Note however that the video version is supported only for Fire devices. Checkout - Kindle Textbook Creator - https://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1002998671
plicense··on GitHub under ongoing DDoS attack
What is Github's backend like? Do they use cloud service providers or do they manage their own infrastructure?

Highly curious to know how Github is preventing the site from crashing down.

plicense··on Is Your VirtualBox Reading Your E-Mail? Reconstruction of FrameBuffers from VRAM
I recently wrote a library that rasterizes a PDF page to an image and was observing a very similar behavior. It was also highly system dependent and erratic as well. I would randomly see a distorted image of my own screen when I run my program on any PDF. Then figured out I was not initializing the buffer I was using to render the PDF page to image. After I memset'ed it to zero, the problem went away. I still couldn't quite comprehend what was exactly happening in the background.

plicense··on Job brokers steal wages and entrap Indian tech workers in US
I noted two things:

1. "Shackling workers to their jobs is such an entrenched business practice that it has even spread to US nationals" - such US arrogance.

2. Almost all names of people affected seem to be from the state of Tamil Nadu in India.

plicense··on OS X Yosemite: I went back to Mavericks
I've noticed no lag either. However I see the same black box around the Volume animation popup. I just felt Apple sucked there - a company that I loved for design and for details making such a mistake?

Adding to that, I've owned two Mac's over a period of 3+ years and never once have they crashed. But today Yosemite just shut down all of a sudden. I've lost my confidence on Yosemite.

"On{x}" can be used to achieve the same functionality on Android. The JS might be a bit verbose, but its as simple as the Javascript code that the OP has written.

I used to set auto-reply messages etc to my girlfriend with On{x} to my girlfriend. I even wrote some JS to auto-call her at specified timing, just to wake her up.
