pletsch··on Stocks Halt; Oil and Bonds Drop in Sync
Canadian oil went below $10. It's insane.
pletsch··on Canada to bar entry to non-residents (except US)
Would rather wait for my surgery than pay six figures for it
pletsch··on Canada to bar entry to non-residents (except US)
I can't imagine Canada not being lenient in this situation, we tend to have quite good relations with all commonwealth countries
pletsch··on People who haven't bought clothes for a decade
It's actually incredibly easy to replace a watch battery on most watches (certainly Timex), you just need a tool to pull the back off ($10ish on Amazon right now) and a battery that fits, which you can pick up at any Wal-Mart for $4-$5.
pletsch··on Launch HN: Visual One (YC W20) – Event recognition for security cameras
Not OP, but if you want privacy conscious users to use your business, they will want to be able to host it themselves.
pletsch··on Launch HN: Visual One (YC W20) – Event recognition for security cameras
The lack of an About page is weird.. I don't think you are being too cynical, the lack of information about this company on their site is concerning. Especially considering they are selling cameras you put in your house.

I'm also surprised by the name they chose, as Visual One is already a software product by Agilysys. I would be surprised if it's not already copyrighted?

pletsch··on Show HN: Fraidycat
I like that you have a style for your UI that (at least looking at your other projects) is completely yours. I think more developers that release small projects all the time should do this.
pletsch··on Farmers Fight John Deere over Who Gets to Fix an $800k Tractor
I could see it happening but you would have to convince someone to let you hack their half a million dollar machine
pletsch··on Farmers Fight John Deere over Who Gets to Fix an $800k Tractor
Might as well be. Most of my family are farmers and most of them have downloaded movies to watch on a tablet, one of them proudly talks about how he naps in his.
pletsch··on Before Clearview Became a Police Tool, It Was a Secret Plaything of the Rich
Very possible. I didn't apply to many places, I got interviews at 3/5, two mentioned it, could have been that the other two saw it and decided I wasn't worth their time.
pletsch··on Before Clearview Became a Police Tool, It Was a Secret Plaything of the Rich
It was a video of me in my university dorms, it wasn't anything illegal or violent. I'm not sure why they felt the need to ask, I wonder if they were just curious for context.
pletsch··on Before Clearview Became a Police Tool, It Was a Secret Plaything of the Rich
The one I took, the interviewer ended up being my boss. He told me that the reason they overlooked it was because:

1. If there were videos of everything stupid he did, there would be no way he would ever get hired.

2. It wasn't anything illegal or violent, so he didn't see it as a character issue.

3. I was honest about it.

I'm convinced that Gen-Z is going to blow all of this out of the water. That the world will eventually hit a point where there isn't anyone without something online that can come back to haunt them. And I think companies are starting to see it too.

A little anecdotal but when I was applying for jobs last summer there was a video that was brought up twice during interviews with different organizations. Both times I was told after the fact that it was just to see how I would react, all I did was tell them what happened, not that I was sorry because I wasn't, I told them I stood behind what my actions were and there was nothing I could do about it now (it hit 100k views on Instagram, not a situation where I can contain it). Both companies offered me a job.

I rewrote this a few times and I'm still not sure I got my point across, but I agree with the argument in the The Transparent Society, and I already see it shifting towards that.

pletsch··on Citroën introduces a two-seat EV that costs €2,644 and then €19.99 a month
Why is it so expensive? Is there required courses? I can understand that in cities, a DL might not be a huge deal but I can't imagine that rural France would be happy with that.
pletsch··on EU Commission to staff: Switch to Signal messaging app
Can it really be economically viable to have these scanned rather than just toss them out? I would imagine that anyone high enough in the EU to be a target is only using drives provided to them
pletsch··on Ontario's new license plates have a problem: you can't read them
Ehh, the 407 is owned by the CPP (50.01%). Ford isn't a fan of the CPP, he tried to cut the increase almost immediately after taking office, I could see him cutting them out. This is also seen in Alberta, another conservative-led province, they've been trying to back out of it for years.

Also, and this is anecdotal, I'm from a small town that votes overwhelmingly conservative, and a common talking point I hear is "why should we pay into the cpp? It won't be there when we retire" even though the fund is in no danger of going away anytime soon.

pletsch··on Ontario's new license plates have a problem: you can't read them
Saw a few of these this weekend, I'm curious to see if the 407 (Ontario's toll road)cameras can read them at night. I imagine this gets changed quite quickly if they can only read the old plates.
pletsch··on US says it can prove Huawei has backdoor access to mobile-phone networks
Just tried this in Ontario, networks were Bell (iPhone 7) + Koodo (Pixel 3) and it didn't deliver.
