pletsch··on Record Breaking Number of Journalists Arrested in the U.S. This Year
I like AP and Reuters for my news internationally, almost everyone sources them. For more local, I try to find news aggregators, an example for Canada is nationalnewswatch.ca , takes articles from across the spectrum. This is really just for events though, when it comes to issues in tech, climate, etc that aren't necessarily an event, I tend to look to individuals in the field who don't go into politics for their analysis
pletsch··on Privacy matters even if “you have nothing to hide”
I received this email. It is very strange. I had never heard of the company either but found they are sellers of B2B contact info.

There is no option to request my info be deleted, or even to correct the info so people aren't harassing the wrong person (some of the information wasn't right, they are selling my parents and families addresses instead of mine). They ALSO have a free app that allows up to 5 contact a day, so they might even be giving this info out for free and I'm assuming someone is harvesting as much free data as they can.

It's absurd that there is an entire industry based on selling private info that they themselves acquired from other companies. It's disgusting that people have built an industry on buying and selling private information

I ended up moving as much data as It's disgusting that people have built an industry on buying and selling private informationI could to a private server, but this really isn't the solution. Most people don't have IT backgrounds to be able to do this sort of thing. I hope more people become aware and sIt's disgusting that people have built an industry on buying and selling private informationtart pressuring govt. officials to change laws.

pletsch··on Reddit is buying TikTok rival Dubsmash
I expect features to just stop working on old.reddit as we get further away from the redesign, whether it be updates internally or full new features. This will continue until it gets unusable and then they'll kill it because 'nobody uses it!'

Big Blue Button is outstanding for any educators looking for tools. Full disclosure that it was built at the school I attended, we had a lot of profs use it and it was by far my favourite way to do distance learning.

How is the mobile experience for YT Music? Looking at switching, I imagine they have the desktop experience down. I love Spotify, but I can't imagine a worse experience outside of their mobile app. The web player was nice but fails to load music two-three times per listening session (to be fair, they are usually 5-8hrs), the desktop application is slow, clunky, and will regularly not play music I have downloaded.

Mind linking a project if you find it? Currently working on a tool that needs text conversations for data training and would be happy to donate if we can use the data as well.
pletsch··on Walmart drops inventory robots from its stores
During my gap year, I ran the backroom at a local Wal-Mart. While I was there, we switched to a new fulfillment system that involved putting all of the stocking responsibilities on one team, instead of spreading it between departments.

The problem isn't the technology, it's the physical amount of product coming in compared to man hours. A typical 8hr shift would look like:

- 3hrs to unload the general merch delivery truck. An hour to unload the two freezer/cooler that would arrive at some point throughout the shift

- 1hr30m of breaks

- 1hr setup for night shift

- 1hr of 'picks', which was stock we had in the backroom that the system said could go out. This doesn't include the actual stocking of said items

That leaves 1hr30m to unload all the stock from the trucks, which doesn't happen.

Even if these robots were in my store and could tell me for certain that products needed to be reshelved, the man power isn't there to do it. It ends up being that all the teams achieve their department goals except for the fulfillment team that gets killed.

pletsch··on Apple building search engine to take on Google, report claims
Why is that a problem? You're not being forced to use it, I'm sure it will integrate beautifully into their systems, which is what Apple products are meant to do. If you don't like the ecosystem, don't use it.

Edit: Also, this is a lot of jumping to conclusions, Google can be used on any device, if Apple wants to compete, it will be usable on any device.

pletsch··on Security Operation Center Simulation for Beginners
Do you have an about page? Pretty skeptical of using any site that doesn't have any info on creators or the org.
pletsch··on YouTube launches TikTok competitor, Shorts
I saw a lot of people spend an enormous amount of time in Uni (last few years) just scrolling and watching videos for hours on YouTube, I know it's a bit of a running joke how quickly Google axes projects, but the users/demand are already there and monetizing YouTube subs is significantly easier than monetizing TikTok followers.

From the area, there's a lot of people with your line of thinking from different fields. I think you'd like it, although there's quite a few small communities in SW Ontario I think are worth moving to.
pletsch··on Facebook launches its TikTok rival, Instagram Reels
My biggest wish for Instagram is to stop creating new ways to format content and give users more control over how their content is distributed. For example, I know a few people with private accounts for close friends or fitness accounts, why not create feeds of posts that people can subscribe to? They have a similar feature with stories/highlights.

This is most likely to boost account #s but it's frustrating to have to follow multiple accounts for one person.

pletsch··on Google announces Pixel 5, Pixel 4A 5G, and Pixel 4A
+1 for Google Support post-purchase. I had the Pixel 3 and there's a feature to just text support from your phone, and they can send a phone in advance if you don't have a loaner/it can still function. The problem I do have is their QC, I went through three Pixels in less than a year and I had an original Pixel for less than 4 months before having to replace it. Hit the point where I did one last RMA to sell and picked up an iPhone.
pletsch··on Google to partner with BankMobile to offer digital bank accounts
This seems to be most Google products, the lack of support has made me shy away from using any of their products.

Edit: This is more for business products, specifically with Google domains, pixel support is excellent.

pletsch··on Is It Time to Kill the Penny?
Disclaimer: this is just my view as a Canadian, not sure if studies back this up.

I think it's a feature. We seem to move a lot faster and it doesn't always work, but for the most part, having MPs as the executive branch allows people at the top to legislate what they need to succeed.
