playingalong··on Peloton to charge $95 activation fee for used bikes
While stationary, it still measures the distance.

(Yeah, I get the joke)

playingalong··on Bug squash: An underrated interview question
Some organizations (although admittedly not all) put a lot of effort to offer a creative environment for their creative staff. So they optimize for something else.

A bit like 100m race vs. marathon.

playingalong··on Biggest productivity killers in the engineering industry
Lack of clear goals from the management.

Too many meetings, especially the recurring ones. Domination of spoken culture instead of written for collaboration.

Lack of proper sleep and rest. Working outside of your normal brain activity hours.

Sudden fire drills - "unforeseen" audit with deadline next Tuesday, a security vulnerability mentioned in TV and you needing to redeploy/upgrade everything ASAP.

playingalong··on Are you better than a language model at predicting the next word?
I've got 2/15, so worse then random choice... I guess partly because English is not my mother tongue.
playingalong··on Olympic medal counts, ranked every possible way in 3D
A nit pick: how is that every possible way?
playingalong··on X ordered to pay €550k to Irish employee fired after yes-or-resign ultimatum

playingalong··on X ordered to pay €550k to Irish employee fired after yes-or-resign ultimatum
I am not sure all these rules are for stronger middle class. I have always thought these are for low-paid workers at a warehouse, cleaning the streets, or alike. They are way more replaceable than some specialist. Yet the state offers protection for their time off which they deserve.
playingalong··on Slackdump
> Slack will delete chats and files from free workspaces at end of August

Are you referring to some deprecation by Slack which affects all free users? Or is it just your 90d retention period elapsing at the end of August?

playingalong··on JPlag – Detecting Software Plagiarism
Can I use it to detect Copy & Paste within my company's own codebase?
playingalong··on VCs don't care if you're nice, they want founders who take risks
You only need a few VCs (and there are always outliers) and so many founders and their employees (by definition it's hard to have a crowd of outliers).
playingalong··on Markdown is meant to be shown (2021)
Wait. In my Slack asterisks mean bold too.
playingalong··on Pixel Watch 3
Interestingly Fitbit is also Google.
playingalong··on Russia has started a fire at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
Politics, politics, politics.

It doesn't pay off to stop Russia. Either from an individual perspective, your party faction, the whole party, or at international level.

Everyone wants to be the good guy, but also succeed in some other goals too. Even assuming no malice.

playingalong··on Features I'd like to see in future IDEs
The Ghost/Replay might have security implications. Often the objects in memory might contain sensitive information (secrets or just customer data). During a debugging session you are likely aware of that. But IDE saving the data beyond your control increases the risk for a leak.

Similarly what they called Commit Masks seems like an invitation for putting passwords into source code, which is a bad idea. Even if done just to check things real quick.

playingalong··on USPS text scammers duped his wife, so he hacked their operation
Because likely they are residing outside of US.

And this doesn't qualify for special forces. It's "just" some people losing some money.

playingalong··on Can we trust Microsoft with Open Source? (2021)
I enjoy and appreciate Slack API reference.

https://api.slack.com/

playingalong··on Evaluating a class of infinite sums in closed form
It feels odd the sum of the first example is 26. (All the number nerds, please forgive me). It's such a usual number.
playingalong··on Fake job interviews are securities fraud
Is it his style or Bloomberg's?
playingalong··on Canarytokens: Honeypot for critical credentials, get notified when they are used (2015)
But these are some lame canary tokens then. One could generate real AWS API keys with no actual permissions.
playingalong··on Missing Henry VIII portrait found after random X post
Is there some list of "missing" artwork some hobby OSINTers could try to find?

Surely this wasn't the first public photo of this painting posted to internet, was it?

playingalong··on Show HN: I made a tool to receive alerts when answers change
The page would benefit a lot from an example or two.

"Who is the current NBA champion?"

"How many MPs do the Toddies have?"

playingalong··on Göttingen was one of the most productive centers of mathematics (2019)
The map in the link is strange. Shows 21st century countries while it pertains to times a few hundred years ago. This doesn't convey the trust.
playingalong··on Call the compiler, fax it your code [video]
This would also have a higher risk of introducing some nasty, hard to spot errors.

It's actually better for the compilation to fail than for the Clippy to make up something syntactically and compilation correct, but wrong.

playingalong··on Oracle's Java pricing brews bitter taste, subscribers spill over to OpenJDK
Likely it's just meeting the compliance requirement that all pieces of software are to be supported. Whatever that means.
playingalong··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
The system could simply default to whatever I picked the latest (or same brand).
playingalong··on How Olympics officials try to catch “motor doping”
There's a difference between creative engineering enabling the whole sport and creative engineers competing with each other behind the scenes.
playingalong··on Warsaw came close to never being rebuilt (2015)
In my layman perspective there's another argument to be made from Soviet perspective.

Dresden was destroyed by the western countries (US et al). While Warsaw was destroyed by Germans.

So "we" fix what the bad Germans broke. But we keep the mess left by the spoiled West as a reminder.

playingalong··on Bignum Arithmetic by AWS
Did they build it to handle customer invoicing?
playingalong··on User returns after 100k-hours ban to continue conversation that got them banned
AFAIK StackExchange / StackOverflow does this.
playingalong··on Ask HN: Can anyone from Crowdstrike explain the back story?
Brainstorming...

Greenland not being that green.

Flaming Saddles and all the names of restaurants serving some kind of spicy food, whose names emphasize the side effects.
