plank_time··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
How are old people with no income supposed to afford capital gains taxes?

And if house prices go down do they get a refund?

plank_time··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
The old person would have sold the house a long time ago because of the rise of their property tax. They wouldn’t be millionaires. They would have to sell their home for a small gain and then rent for the rest of their lives. And since they are old they have no income so they need to keep moving to cheaper and cheaper apartments.

Sounds like a great way to live a life, just because younger people feel like they deserve to live in their house.

plank_time··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
You’re saying that old people should be driven out of their houses because younger, richer people deserve to live in their houses. I’m sure your feelings will change as you get older.

Unfortunately that’s not how the body works. Waste isn’t produced because of excess intake. That’s what causes far buildup. Anything you eat and drink will create waste.
plank_time··on Simone Biles Makes History as First Woman to Ever Land Yurchenko Double Pike
It seems like you don’t understand exactly how different Simone Biles is from every single gymnast before her. She is an anomaly in the field of gymnastics. She can physically do things that no other gymnast, male or female, can do because of how short she is, how strong she is, and how skilled she is. If she were of regular gymnast height, her skill would still make her one of the greatest gymnasts. But add on the fact she is so short and so strong, it means she does things no one else would dare to do.

I love Michael Jordan. He is my favorite basketball player ever. I’ve watched him play basketball live. But he is no Simone Biles.

The question isn’t whether Simone Biles is the greatest gymnast in history. The question is whether any gymnast in the future can ever do what she can do right now. Unless children become genetically engineered to be gymnasts, there may never be another gymnast as great as Biles.

plank_time··on Simone Biles Makes History as First Woman to Ever Land Yurchenko Double Pike
You can’t compare Simone Biles to Michael Jordan. If Michael Jordan could shoot 3 pointers with 90% accuracy from his own half court, then that would be a more accurate comparison.

Simone Biles has a unique combination of size, strength, and skill that truly makes her the greatest gymnast ever and probably going forward in time as well.

plank_time··on Amazon has a quota for the number of employees it would be happy to see leave
You are wrong. Companies like Facebook and Google allow you to vest shares almost immediately (I think they vest quarterly). Unless you think their shares are going to drop precipitously, it’s absolutely okay to count equity these days.
plank_time··on Employees are quitting instead of giving up working from home
You sound like you need to learn more empathy and how to be less judgmental.
plank_time··on Rejection Sensitivity
Empathy doesn’t mean saying “everything you do is okay.” Thats called enabling their behavior. It sometimes means having to say the honest, hard things in hopes that people will change their behavior for the better. It’s fairly obvious that the author has a hard time maintaining friendships. To blame that on society today and social media is wrong.
plank_time··on Rejection Sensitivity
Maybe I’m more considerate than average to people I’ve known throughout my life, but being rejected is not normal for me. The frequency to which the author was rejected by people seems to indicate there’s a problem with him, not society. Of course it has happened, but we are talking about ex-girlfriends or people I’ve had legitimate fights with.

But I still have friends from every stage of my life. I have a group of friends that I’ve known since grade 1 and we WhatsApp every day. We get into salty verbal arguments all the time like brothers, but we never have coke close to rejecting each other. During the pandemic I’ve had friends from high school that I haven’t spoken with for 30+ years that sought me out and we talked on the phone for 2 hours. In the last few weeks I had a coworker from 20 years ago reach out to me because she heard I “retired” pre-pandemic and wanted my advice on if she should do it. We chatted for over an hour. During the pandemic I’ve pinged several friends/coworkers from various companies I’ve worked with just to say hi. I’m planning on going for lunch with another coworker from 20 years ago in the next few weeks. I’ve even made new friends during the pandemic, having met someone that shared my same cynical views on the Federal Reserve, the stock market, etc.

It’s not hard to maintain friendships with people, just be considerate and courteous! Not everyone needs to be your best friend, but you also don’t need to be so navel gazing that all you care about is yourself.

The fact that the author has so many people rejecting the author makes me think he’s simply not a good friend and deserves to be rejected.

plank_time··on Are we cut out for universal morality?
Agreed. There will always be people splitting hairs and vehemently thinking their views are “more correct” and “more morally correct”. That’s why I think this entire article is a waste of time. The idea of “universal morality” is fiction because everyone thinks differently.

The best course of action is never to try to find a single “universal” truth but to accept a plurality of “truths”. That’s the only way we can survive as a species.

plank_time··on Are we cut out for universal morality?
It depends on who defines morality, which invalidates the concept of a “universal” morality. If the definer of the morality decides that human lives are the most important and it would be immoral to hold animals and plants above humans, it would produce a completely different end result.

Or they may determine that all you mention plus natural formations like lakes and mountains and rock formations deserve protection and equal protection.

That’s why this entire article is a waste of time to me.

plank_time··on Chinese paddlefish, one of the world's largest fish, declared extinct
One DNA sample isn’t enough. You need dozens or more to repopulate a species. If you just had one or two, you would have to rely on inbreeding to repopulate which would create too many bad genetic problems from bad genes.

This is what Tesla is doing with their solar roof product. They raised prices by 50% even though people already had signed contracts. All their communication is incredibly insidious, telling people that they need to sign the new contract, when in fact that’s false, in hopes of convincing customers to cancel their order. I can’t wait until a class action lawsuit rips them a new asshole at this point.
plank_time··on Our digital pasts weren’t supposed to be weaponized like this
I realized this back in 1997 when dejanews started up. From then on I never posted with my real name, and never will.

I only have a very limited internet presence with my real name and never post any of my opinions on it.

plank_time··on ProtonMail includes Google Recaptcha for login
Self hosting these days is almost impossible because most email providers like gmail and yahoo mail will automatically move your emails to spam. It’s all based on IP address and how reliable that IP address is. Self hosting guarantees that all your sent email will end up in spam folders.
plank_time··on Had Covid? You’ll probably make antibodies for a lifetime
Anecdotally, I don’t know anyone personally who has gotten COVID. That doesn’t mean that I discount science and don’t believe that it exists.

Reinfection is extremely low otherwise it would have shown itself in the data. That’s really a simple fact.

plank_time··on Had Covid? You’ll probably make antibodies for a lifetime
This statement is overly alarmist. 98% of people survive covid. >85% are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. The vast majority of people survive without any issues. The biggest problem with covid is how infectious it is, which is what really overwhelms health care systems.

Great video!

How can you accumulate enough mass to make this possible without destabilizing the entire solar system? Even getting to the Oort Cloud to collect mass outside of our solar system is 3 light years away.

plank_time··on World Now Likely to Hit Watershed 1.5 °C Rise in Next 5 Years
I refuse to believe it will be bad for all countries. That doesn’t make sense whatsoever, that just being overly emotional and unscientific. There is always a winner and loser in everything. The key is to figure out which country benefits the most.

Even something like the Pandemic, some businesses have learned to thrive. Humans are resilient and the ones who can adapt to change the best will always win out.

plank_time··on I Was Robbed in San Francisco While the Cameras Rolled
My friend owns a Shoppers Drug Mart in Toronto. They employ the same strategy there too. In areas with high foot traffic they have a lot of stores close by to make it hard for anyone else to start a business in the area. It ends up being more overall profitable because they take all the sales in that area leaving it harder for newer competitors to operate profitably.

ABC stores in Honolulu employ the same strategy. There are mutilple ABC stores on the same block sometimes.

Hotels, hospitals and restaurants with long waiting lines.
plank_time··on I Was Robbed in San Francisco While the Cameras Rolled
Walgreens has closed over 17 stores due to increased shoplifting. It is 400% higher than the national average in SF. It’s higher in SF because the repercussions are much lower because SFPD doesn’t even bother looking. Look at the reaction to the theft of the camera. The police said the DA need video evidence, eyewitnesses don’t matter anymore, even with a picture of the car. The criminals are free to commit crimes consequence-free.
plank_time··on The architecture of Uber’s API gateway
At peak I can see it being low single digit millions per second. A single client will do more than 1 rps, there’s a lot going on per client.
plank_time··on My thoughts about the Principal role
25 years of experience, and I never wanted to get above Staff Engineer. The work is just not something that I enjoy. I love coding, and I like working directly with my team. When I applied to new companies, I purposefully applied at the Senior engineer level, not Staff or higher.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have just put on my big boy pants on and put in the extra work to get promoted, something my bosses actually asked me to do. And more especially when I see my peers become at a higher level, director, VP etc. But life is short and I never would have stayed in the business if I had to care about things that I fundamentally don’t care about. Almost dying a couple of years ago really helped gel my thoughts on that.

plank_time··on The architecture of Uber’s API gateway
CORBA never scaled to the level that Uber needs to. Pre-pandemic, you’re talking hundreds of thousands to millions of requests per second globally. Also you never saw a CORBA project with thousands of engineers checking in code multiple times a day. All these are factors too.

People on HN always think “all it’s doing is matching a rider with a driver, why is it so complicated? I can write it in a weekend!” Sure, but it won’t scale.

plank_time··on Being Poor (2005)
My children went to the same school as Sergei Brain’s kids and prepandemic, on an international flight he flew in economy with his kids vs using a private jet or flying them in first class. Very admirable since he is one of the richest people in the world, but something I would find very hard to do myself, to be honest.
plank_time··on Facebook says I'm abusive content [video]
I think you’re wrong. If Facebook defines a community standard, that can be opinion based. But saying someone violated those standards is fact based. It doesn’t matter what the rules are in this case. The rules aren’t the issue. Saying that someone violated those rules is the issue. Whether someone violated the rules or didn’t violate them is a fact. And if they say they violated rules when they didn’t, that’s is an incorrect, fact-based statement which I believe is a case for libel, especially if they say someone broke the rules for things like abusive content.
