pkamb··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
Those fully vertical layouts are fine, I guess, if you keep your hands pinned to your sides sticking straight forward. And if the keyboard is the exact width of your body. Looks uncomfortable, personally.

I prefer to lay my hands out slightly wide on the desk, angled inward. Which exactly matches the slope of `UJM` on any standard keyboard.

pkamb··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
Have you considered an alternate or fully custom layout?
pkamb··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
Give any keyboard most of the benefits of a split keyboard by angling your hand/finger columns like `////\\\\` rather than like `\\\\\\\\` (as is commonly taught).

You should be typing "Z" with your ring finger, not pinky. 'WSZ' column, not 'WSX'.

Even the linked "Ultimate Hacking Keyboard" will require a VERY aggressive slanted placement of the left hand segment to give yourself comfortable inward left hand columns. Compare to Microsoft-style split/ergonomic keyboards, which angle `QAZ` inward or vertical.

pkamb··on GitHub CLI 1.0
I use `hub sync` multiple times per day. Essential tool.

It's the only way to stay sane in a repo with multiple other developers merging PRs. Updates all of your branches in the background to the current remote version.

pkamb··on DuckDuckGo is growing fast
I definitely don't want to use the site's search box. I just want a normal Google-style search... but ranking "discussion" sites highly.
pkamb··on DuckDuckGo is growing fast
Tip for mobile users: remap "ggg" to input "!g" to make the Google shortcut much easier to type.
pkamb··on DuckDuckGo is growing fast
I wish there was a search engine that dedicated the first X results to Stack Exchange and Reddit.

Neither DDG or Google are very good at that, but those sites are consistently the best and most honest results.

On Google many searches give mostly affiliate blogspam articles unless I append "reddit" or "forum" or "stack" to the search, at which point I get great results.

pkamb··on iOS 14 is available today
iMessage (blue bubble) conversations are fairly good and well-featured, but I wish they would bring some kind of improvements to SMS text messages (green bubbles).

I wonder how much of it is competitive advantage to push people to switch to iOS vs. Apple executives literally never texting people with Android phones.

pkamb··on Apple: Apps should not require users to opt into tracking to access content
> Apps should allow a user to get what they’ve paid for without performing additional tasks, such as [...] uploading contacts

WhatsApp gates many features behind Contacts access. Do the same rules apply to everyone, even Facebook?

pkamb··on Adam Curry launches a new, open podcast directory
All podcast apps still primarily use the Apple Podcasts Directory to index/search the shows and episodes.

"Indie self hosted podcasts" are still predominantly listed in the Apple Podcasts Directory.

AND he messes up the search results for my keyboard layout!
pkamb··on Patreon Raises $90M Series E at $1.2B Valuation
Patreon is trying to be a YouTube/Facebook-like community platform that controls the relationship between creators and paying fans. There's no reason to pay an extra 12% on top of credit card fees if you already control your own distribution and membership list, as all RSS podcasts do.
pkamb··on Patreon Raises $90M Series E at $1.2B Valuation
I suppose I like it as well... but the point being that in the case of these podcasts Patreon is only rent-seeking and not actually "building a community of fans" or hosting/delivering/surfacing the content. (And those aspirations are I'm sure what underpin the $90M investment and entire company growth strategy.)

Podcasters could save ~10% on Patreon fees and maybe even gain some useful dedicated RSS tools and membership perks that would work inside a podcast app.

pkamb··on Patreon Raises $90M Series E at $1.2B Valuation
The name is really good.
pkamb··on Patreon Raises $90M Series E at $1.2B Valuation
After supporting the creator your get the RSS feed in an email:

pkamb··on Patreon Raises $90M Series E at $1.2B Valuation
Many of the most successful Patreon profiles use the platform only as a way to provide a paid addition to their free podcast feed. You start supporting them, grab the private RSS feed and add it to your podcast app, then never visit Patreon again.

You turn off Patreon emails and push notifications because the episodes just show up in your podcatcher like any other podcast. Patreon isn't offering anything in the relationship beyond recurring monthly payment processing. RSS + your parasocial friendship with the podcast hosts are what builds the relationship.

I'd love it if a podcast-focused company stepped in to fill the same role. They could provide the same custom features that ATP and Dithering/Stratechery have added recently to their paid feeds. The UX of having "Free" and "Paid" feeds for the same podcast really sucks.

pkamb··on Has Atlassian stopped developing SourceTree for Mac?
These are the 2 bugs that I hit on a daily basis.

- SourceTree Mac has a major UI bug that has not been fixed in 2 years: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Sourcetree-questions/Sour...

- SourceTree breaks Copy/Paste https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/SRCTREE-7115

pkamb··on The fate of antiques and heirlooms in a disposable age
Go to Estate Sales on the weekend. You can get great older furniture and quality well-made objects for cheap.
pkamb··on The fate of antiques and heirlooms in a disposable age
Does the Facebook export tool preserve any metadata? That's the major annoyance I've had with FB photos, years later... none of the dates are correct.

I've done the same as you, importing every family digital photo I can find into iCloud Photos. Flip Phones, Palm, BlackBerry, early digital cameras. $10 data cables from eBay are the way to go.

I've yet to tackle the film photos and slides, but that's next on the list.

pkamb··on Degoogle: Cutting Google out of your life
At the very least, turn off Google account creation pop-ups on every other random site:

pkamb··on Can't you just right click?
I would have assumed that double-clicking is functionally equivalent to selecting “Open” from the context menu.

At least in Vista it was a separate command “Run as administrator”...

pkamb··on Google resumes its attack on the URL bar, hides full addresses on Chrome 86
I've thought about this as well. Tapping the URL bar on an iPhone should open a multi-line wrapping text block that doesn't require painful horizontal scrolling.

pkamb··on Google resumes its attack on the URL bar, hides full addresses on Chrome 86
The example url in the article is:

which is shortened in the address bar to:

> en.wikipedia.org

at the VERY least, I wish they would instead use:

> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL

Same for Twitter and Reddit URLs, specifically. Don't hide the username or the subreddit.

pkamb··on Apple just kicked Fortnite off the App Store
Reddit has a mobile view that is almost the exact same UI as the AMP page. WHY do they allow Google to run the AMP page instead? I too have switched to DDG solely to avoid Reddit AMP pages.
