pkamb··on Apple Invites
As I understand it, many Americans (and all iPhones?) had unlimited-SMS phone plans circa 2009. So the pay-per-message economic conditions that caused many Europeans, etc., to switch to WhatsApp back in the day didn't do anything in the USA.

Then when the same iPhone app seamlessly started sending iMessages (blue bubbles) to other iPhones rather than SMS (green bubbles), people just kept using that.

pkamb··on Apple Invites
For a long time they were heavily promoting "Ships to You" non-local goods. Annoying. Lots of dropshipper type stuff rather than a local unique items. Marketplace seems to have backed off that in the last year(s) though, my feed seems very local, one-off, and "real.
pkamb··on Apple Invites
I think Apple already has claimed the "friends and family network" via iMessage. Did Facebook go to a groups/influencer algorithm by choice or is it the result of IRL friend posters all moving to private chats once everyone got iPhones?
pkamb··on Show HN: I built a DIY plane spotting system at home
Watching football this fall, I've been thinking about a little box that sits on my table and mutes the TV whenever an ad comes on.

Not decoding HDMI HDCP or anything, but a webcam + AI or whatever that watches football with me and mutes ads. Similar to plane detection, maybe. Are there any projects like this?

pkamb··on Apple unveils 'Passwords' manager app at WWDC 2024
My annoyance with Keychain has been that items kind of appear there as I type in a username and password on the web. Feels rather ephemeral, like old "saved passwords" in Internet Explorer or whatever. Feels like I'm one browser cookie reset away from losing everything.

Whereas with 1Password I use a separate app to CREATE a new Login file for an app/website/anything. I can save that file with as much or a little information filled out as desired. Can create arbitrary info files for Passports, library membership cards, etc. I know the information for each is forever stored exactly as I created it, always syncing, never overwritten when I type in a different password and accidentally hit "save" in a webform.

I hope the new Apple Passwords app is more like the later; if so I would switch.

pkamb··on YouTube dominates TV streaming in US, per Nielsen's latest report
People find value in TikTok, obviously, and Google wants part of that pie and is willing to degrade all of our YouTube experience in order to chase it.

But very unclear if anyone finds value in Shorts.

pkamb··on YouTube dominates TV streaming in US, per Nielsen's latest report
Reels in the feed is what makes me hate modern IG. There’s already a Reels tab I never tap! I’m telling you something, please listen.
pkamb··on AI your home on street view
It’s always the cars.
pkamb··on Euros Bills Drawn Not to Represent Real Bridges. He Built Them All on This River
Are footbridges easy to build in Europe? I've done some preliminary research into how a rural town in the USA would install similar small pedestrian bridges. The costs are astronomical and the environmental review seems nigh impossible to satisfy. (The only alternative, of course, is to drive a car as the existing roads/bridges are too unsafe for pedestrians + bikes.)
pkamb··on Tell HN: Google search sucks even more during Reddit blackout
I would love a competing SERP that simply listed the results on Wikipedia, Reddit, Stack Overflow, etc. Have a major section of the page that ALWAYS lists the Wikipedia result. Don't make me add "reddit" to every search term.
pkamb··on The Bay Area German bar that brought down Apple’s famed iPhone security
I know SFGate as the San Fransisco newspaper website that for some reason comes up when you google for questions about repairing old homes. Seems like they're spending their entire SEO budget on lath and plaster repair guides.
pkamb··on When Interfaces Kill: What Happened to John Denver (1999)
> The valve: The builder not only placed the valve in a non-standard location [behind the pilot's left shoulder], he also rotated it in such a way that turning the valve to the right turned on the left fuel tank. This ensured that a pilot unfamiliar with the aircraft, upon hearing the engine begin missing and spotting in his mirror that the left fuel tank was empty, would attempt to rotate the fuel valve to the right, away from the full tank, guaranteeing his destruction.

So the builder intended you turn the backwards valve right, towards the left wing, and that activates the left fuel tank? This certainly sounds like a better human interface than turning the backwards valve left, towards the right wing, and activating the left tank.

pkamb··on I.reddit.com Has Been Deprecated
Does anyone know of a way to prevent `old.reddit.com` from reloading every time you click/tap "back"?

1. Visit home page. 2. Click link; read. 3. Press "back". 4. The homepage takes 1-5 seconds to reload, messing up your reading position and all stories.

I just want the page to remain exactly as it was the last time I saw it...

pkamb··on Ask HN: Will personal websites gain traction as AI content floods the web?
I would certainly use a search engine that weighted heavily against the current style of SEO articles and towards real blogs and good sites. The top links on Google are indistinguishable from AI articles as-is, so I don't think Google is interested in providing this service.
pkamb··on Ask HN: What is your replacement for Google search
Still waiting for a search engine that only searches Wikipedia, Reddit, Stack Overflow, Flickr, and a handful of other sites.
pkamb··on Our First Closeup Image of Mars Was a Paint-by-Numbers Pastel Drawing
> Though he used a brown/red color scheme, the thought that Mars was red did not enter his mind.

Mars is visibly red in the sky with your naked eye...

pkamb··on Why do all these 20-somethings have closed captions turned on?
Please, an Apple TV feature that just automatically turns on Closed Captioning whenever you Skip Back 15 seconds.

I don't want to ask Siri every time.

pkamb··on Why Craigslist still looks the same after 25 years
I'll never buy a shipped item on Facebook Marketplace. Shop showing me them!
pkamb··on Why Craigslist still looks the same after 25 years
That's how it should work. In reality, 50% of the items FBM shows for a search are non-local "ships to you" items that you'll never buy. But that juices someone's OKR somewhere.
pkamb··on FB feed is 98% suggested pages and barely any friends' posts
People post liberally to private Groups you're a member of, and you don't need to be their friends. Group posts should be the majority of your newsfeed.
pkamb··on Programming on 34 Keys
What application do you use to set this up on a Mac?
pkamb··on DRY is an over-rated programming principle?
The UW intro CS courses call the `if (x)` form "Boolean Zen", which I've always enjoyed.
pkamb··on Webcams aren't good enough
Mainly for the external case design, which is still top-notch.

http://www.minimallyminimal.com/blog/apple-isight

Great features too in the magnetic monitor attachment and the fancy aperture to close and turn off the camera.

The low resolution is somewhat appealing, in a retro way. If I'm going to be using a crappy external webcam it's cool that the image looks like an early 2000s PowerBook.

pkamb··on Webcams aren't good enough
If I could I'd still be using my 480p external 2003 iSight camera through an increasingly ridiculous series of dongles:

https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/412516/external-is...

Support though has been removed from Apple Silicon Macs :(

Would be a good project for someone to hack support back in.

pkamb··on The balance has shifted away from SPAs
Old.Reddit.com does some kind of page-reload every time you navigate back to the subreddit from a comments page. Incredibly annoying and makes Hacker News feel blazing fast by comparison.

Does anyone know how to block that page reload and associated movement of stories and scroll position on the page you're returning back to?

pkamb··on Some notes on 'asshat' (2018)
I think its usage on the internet grew as an acceptable alternative to the banned word "asshole" on various message boards.

https://ksot.net/banned/

"Asshat" also gives you plausible deniability for sneaking in "ass" + the past tense of "shit". That's how I've always read it.

pkamb··on The day I discovered that Apple Maps is Kind of Good now
I’d love a map feature that paused directions until the last ~10% of the trip. I know how to get on my local highway and drive for 60 miles! Let me queue up the address but only start talking to me when I need directions.
pkamb··on Facebook’s Retirement Plan
Until they very quickly ruined Marketplace by heavily promoting low quality new and "shipped to you" items rather than local used goods.
pkamb··on Microsoft 3D Movie Maker Source Code
"I'll trade a magic trick for a vase."
pkamb··on Apple announces 27-inch 5K Studio Display
That's the same resolution (screen real estate) as this new one. Just 1x and not 2x Retina.
