Building Spatial/Physical AI for over 15 years.

I don’t think speculation was the right word. Scarcity exploitation (something current investment firms love doing) is better and building new housing is not that.

That’s what regulations are for. If AI was known to have the destructive capabilities of strip mining, with real evidence of harm then it should be regulated and would have much lower returns regardless of your morals.

“I do believe there are better investments outside the AI bubble.”

Then make them! I don’t have the confidence you have in this “scam”. For sure the valuations are inflated but I don’t think this infrastructure investment will be a waste.

Happy to wield the hammer of Lina Khan to stop the monopolizing and rent seeking.

I think if you want the public to accept that the government will be a better shepherd of this money than a decentralized smattering of individuals then the government should provide evidence for this, once it actually opens up from a dysfunctional shutdown.

At least in the American context everything from California High Speed rail to bloated defense spending has shown that VC’s are much better shepherds of their own money.

But that’s not how investing works? It’s money looking for returns not social good (that’s what taxes are for).

In that way AI is 1000% better than crypto or real estate speculation.

I’m not saying don’t tax them or let them influence politics.

I’m saying letting them go to space or turning sand into intelligence is infinitely better than buying land and charging us rent (what most rich people have done in history).

I see this take a lot, but it confuses me. There is no guarantee that LP’s would take that money and instead invest it in <tech I respect that is not AI>.

They would just as likely hoover up housing around the country or some such insanity to capitalize on the scarcity.

VC is actually a pretty effective vehicle to separate rich people from their money so society can try crazy things. You just don’t agree with this particular adventure and frankly there will never be the perfect alternative adventure.

pj_mukh··on Buckle Up, the Smart Glasses Backlash Is Coming
That code (penal code 632) has a carve out for when there is a “reasonable expectation” of the location being in public so outside of private spaces it doesn’t apply.

The internet is littered with a*holes with cameras testing that carve out and members of the public who don’t know who get into fights. Best to not be interesting in public unless you’re okay with being filmed I guess.

pj_mukh··on Companies are lying about AI layoffs?
I don’t know about people’s anecdata but this data does not support the claim it makes.

Skills aren’t interchangeable and there is no universal hiring pool called “IT” under which you can hire anyone with an engineering degree and so an H1B swap becomes the only answer.

There are a large number of pools of specializations that fall into and out of favor with time, with people transitioning between them (as they should!). AI has fallen into favor and some frontend/backend jobs have fallen out. Is this what this data shows? Maybe? We’d never know.

pj_mukh··on The death of east London's most radical bookshop
And don’t forget City Lights in San Francisco has been open since 1953! I wonder how they avoided drama like this.
pj_mukh··on Find SF parking cops
Part of me says, “What a clever hack! Can I get a notification feature wrt where I parked?”

The other part of me says “Can we just use Public goods more responsibly instead of scratching and clawing our way through maximizing every second of monopolizing public spaces for our personal property storage”

pj_mukh··on Meta Ray-Ban Display
I mean they’re not cartoon villains.

This message is just not getting through to leadership from the bubble and all these hardware sales is an opening for alternative business plans, especially if Apple offers a decent alternative.

pj_mukh··on Meta Ray-Ban Display
Honestly, I’m an avid user of Ray-Ban metas and I agree that if Zuck doesn’t want to re-hash his old original sin (distracting algorithmic feeds) into this new form factor, he would block out any feeds and notifications from the glasses when it detected someone was talking to you, which the glasses can do really well. I’m hoping whatever answer Apple comes up with here has this behavior as default because they don’t have an active user axe to grind.

The glasses shine bright when you’re alone, on a walk.

Also while you’re at it, kill the Facebook and Instagram feeds to save humanity. Too much to ask?

pj_mukh··on Alterego: Thought to Text
I think the idea here is a very different mode of programming. Less prompting, waiting, seeing results, prompting again (where typing is not the bottleneck)

But more having a conversation with a really fast coding agent. That should feel like you’re micro-managing an intern as they code really fast, you could start describing the problem and it could start coding and you interject and tell it to do do things differently. There the bottleneck would be typing, especially if you have fast inference. But with voice now you’re coding at the speed of your thoughts.

I think doing that would be super cool but awkward if you’re talking out loud in an office, that’s where this device would come in.

pj_mukh··on iPhone dumbphone
Sorry basic question.

You can still access all the social media from the browser eh?

pj_mukh··on AI Adoption Rate Trending Down for Large Companies
Or more likely it’ll look like the e-commerce adoption plots with a giant pop in the late 90s and then a 20 year slog of consistent growth [1]

Pretty much exactly what the S-curve looks like.

pj_mukh··on Why Dishwashers Are Quietly Disappearing from American Homes
Gawd, this is extremely unpopular to say in some circles especially in California (looking at you Boomers of Sierra Club), but a West Coast Manhattan project on how to sustainably desalinate Ocean Water would make most of these “lipstick on a pig” solutions moot.

“Don’t use too much water in the dishwasher, don’t grow almonds, don’t build too many apartments, we don’t have the water”

Getting screamed at with all this while living next to a literal Ocean of water is just so tiringly frustrating.

pj_mukh··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Yea I was asking really about what the various post offices are actually doing, as opposed to what the Trump admins hopes they would do.

I have to actually deal with the former.

pj_mukh··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
Wait, ARE “personal packages” exempt? Doesn’t say that in the press release.

If I buy a Swiss watch (<$800) I’ll have to use DHL or UPS (though AFAIK, they also use national post in places) so I’m SOL.

But if my Swiss friend mails me a watch they can use Swiss Post still? Unclear.

pj_mukh··on MAID in Canada
I think any article that cites assisted suicide statistics without breaking it down by Track 1 vs Track 2, should not be taken seriously.

The author cites 5% as the “number too high” but as someone who’s had a family member who’s been through the MAiD system, Track 2 is pretty difficult to get so I would t be surprised if most of that 5% is Track 1, but we wouldn’t know from this article.

pj_mukh··on Measuring the environmental impact of AI inference
Bingo.

Playing whack a mole with individual behavior while the elephant in the room is energy production and transportation remains asinine as always.

pj_mukh··on CEO pay and stock buybacks have soared at the largest low-wage corporations
Now the question is how the efficient market hypothesis plays out here in the long term. Counterexamples like Costco exist and are doing extremely well, when and how do their asset prices reflect this?
pj_mukh··on AWS CEO says using AI to replace junior staff is 'Dumbest thing I've ever heard'
By unedited I mean, take the message literally and quote it to support a narrative that isn’t clear or consistent. (even internally among Amazon leadership)
pj_mukh··on AWS CEO says using AI to replace junior staff is 'Dumbest thing I've ever heard'
Might want to clarify things with your boss who says otherwise [1]? I do wish journalists would stop quoting these people unedited. No one knows what will actually happen.

pj_mukh··on Say farewell to the AI bubble, and get ready for the crash
I think the announcement was mostly a ploy to get OpenAI access to the White House and not much else (especially because Musk was already in there).

But they are clearly on their way to build 20 data centers[1]. OpenAI raising $500B over 10-15 years to build inference capacity isn’t really that hard to believe or that impressive at this point tbh. Like that could just be venture debt that is constantly serviced.

pj_mukh··on CBP Is Deporting Cruise Ship Crew over CSAM Allegations Without Evidence
I think if the government said “these workers are no longer legal and we are revoking their visas” like they did to TPS immigrants that would make more sense.

To make up evidence en masse seems a whole other level

pj_mukh··on CBP Is Deporting Cruise Ship Crew over CSAM Allegations Without Evidence
Not to be glib, but most fascist foot soldiers are convinced (via years of propaganda) that they are getting rid of criminals and corrupt citizens.

These CBP officers who’re making up evidence for innocent legal/documented immigrants, what are they thinking? Or is there some kind of central source making up digital evidence?

pj_mukh··on California unemployment rises to 5.5%, worst in the U.S. as tech falters
Lol. Called it. Always with the moving goal posts.

Oh but remittances are high! Think of the short term effects.

I will mention my Indian coworkers parents use the remittances to buy Netflix subscriptions, Coca-Cola and American Corn but it won’t be enough. It’ll never be enough.

Constant-pie thinking is an all consuming identity not a rational viewpoint that can be reasoned with.

pj_mukh··on California unemployment rises to 5.5%, worst in the U.S. as tech falters
As per your article:

“But Mollick said it’s too early to gauge how disruptive AI will be to the workforce. ”

I’d like a follow up article when I’m guessing a good chunk of these writers were hired back when their managers realized ChatGPT can’t help replace real creative writing output. It can only create more dead internet spaces that don’t make money long term.

There will always be bad managers making shitty decisions and journalists and CEO's eager to confirm a narrative, AI or no-AI
