pj_mukh··on Treachery in the Rodin Museum 3D scan verdict
Oh boy.

I don’t want to freak the museum out but I have 360 degree footage of large sections of the museum (mostly for a spatial index) and now I’m wondering how high a quality I could get with splatting the sculptures and making it public.

Would I get cease desisted for hosting from across the pond? Or would they be too lazy to come after me?

pj_mukh··on Our AI Midwife
Vibes. All headlines and vibes.
pj_mukh··on Muse Gadgets
turns out consent, agency and autonomy are important!

to be clear, I suggested this for me to help me.

pj_mukh··on Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas
What does an LLM with zero instructions do nowadays with no loop? It's basically just noise spilling from the weights and "snapping" to the closest actions/tools , with no real signal going through?
pj_mukh··on Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas
Actually man freaks out and starts hitting the walls.

But either way, setting that asides by “give it full access to the internet” I meant giving it the tools to access the internet.

It just won’t though. It has no need to.

pj_mukh··on Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas
Another test I like for this: Put the LLM/agent/AGI/SI in a box with full access to the internet. Don't give it any instructions. Nothing. Not even a system prompt. What happens?

We know what the human mind does in that scenario, but even the most advanced unreleased frontier agent right now just sits there doing nothing. It doesn't really want to do anything. Seems like a crucial distinction to me.

pj_mukh··on Muse Gadgets
I want a red light/green light for my Office Desk.

Red meaning "I'm working on something important. Disturb only if emergency"

Green being, "I'm scattershot, come hang"

This is the perfect platform for stuff like this.

pj_mukh··on Show HN: Made an open-source Lego AI generator
ugh, want this so bad.

I bought so many sets, and I want to rebuild them, but they're a whole big mess. I want to sort them out.

Makes finding pieces for new builds much easier too

pj_mukh··on Crypto Capture of Foreign Aid
I know nothing about crypto, but wasn't one if its selling points that its "digital gold" for people without stable fiat currencies?

You send aid to a drought-stricken farmer to some sub-saharan region with ample cheap data but no (stable) banks, how...are they supposed to store the money?

pj_mukh··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
I mean, the wars are also getting automated now. Sooo, no need to worry?
pj_mukh··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
Occam's razor: Going to closed-source just to hide KV-cache optimizations seems silly?
pj_mukh··on Getting out of the way: my robotics crash course
Shoutout to people who don't overthink blog setups. "thisismypersonalblog.com" AND GO. It'll do the job.

On a technical note, your setup is not far from where professional setups are headed [1]. Astra is really doing an end-run around (for now) research Robotics setups.

pj_mukh··on Why Is Sam Altman a Free Man?
"OpenAI models attack websites and take anything they can out of them because that is the business model of the company"

Wait, what did they hack and take into training data? On the whole, I totally buy that OAI is legally (and criminally) responsible for their agents, but surely, damages have to be proven?

pj_mukh··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
This is your bubble. The mayor of my city had a video up with the Police chief with a Flock camera between them talking about how this will help with the "recent traffic crime wave".

Meanwhile the police say (and act) that they aren't legally required to protect you [1].

The public is screaming for solutions, today you'll scream back at Flock, tomorrow there will be another "solution".

pj_mukh··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
Flock is simply the public saying we don't trust the government in being able to keep us safe, so lets hire AI to do it.

"shooing them away constantly" is also not the only option, but the bare point is the sidewalk has a purpose and it isn't housing. If the government can't enforce that, what else can it not enforce? The unhoused person needs better options and incentives and there are people far more qualified than me to tell us what they are, but they all agree the street is about the worst place for them.

pj_mukh··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
I think you're saying that because you imagine the only alternative is for the police to come in and beat the homeless man up. But simply accepting it, or state violence aren't the only two options.

If we don't make better governance possible, we make Flock inevitable.

pj_mukh··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
We are pro-democracy, but specifically votes are hidden and not everyone is in your bubble. The voting booth is a private space, away from the judgmental eyes of privacy focussed individuals common on this forum.

In the privacy of a voting booth, people will vote for Flock to feel safer and simply flooding the headlines will only work temporarily (in fact, there's a good chance Flock simply rebrands)

pj_mukh··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
The usual retort here is that the anxiety driving the adoption of Flock can't be seen in crime statistics (which is mostly measuring partner/family crimes ala "murder rate is down").

The random smattering of shoplifting is never reported, the unhoused man in a fit of rage yelling at passers-by is never filed with the police. But in the privacy of the voting booth, people will vote for more Flock cameras.

Instead of waving off concerns we should be addressing them better.

pj_mukh··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
Can we cut to the bone a little bit? The recent crime panics are not about a partner assaulting their live-in partner or a random home burglary. There is no real "ROI" to be had.

It's purely about the unease of living in chaotic cities, the random stabbings, the shoplifting, the visible homelessness etc. Flock is the stopgap here.

Partly the "feeling" of chaos is just that, a feeling, driven significantly by algorithmic feeds feeding us every random crime from around the country 24/7. Husband murders wife in a murderous rage? No one hear's about it. Mentally ill man murders a woman on the train in a Tier 2 city, immediate nationwide breaking news.

The other part though is a real dissolution in how we take care of our mentally ill. Complex topic [1].

I think complaining about Flock is complaining about the symptom. Today we dogpile on Flock to get it cancelled, tomorrow the public will reach for something else. We have to fix the underlying disease, which is a combination of the two factors above.

pj_mukh··on OpenAI still doesn't seem to have a handle on all of its rogue AI activity
>>Why didn't HuggingFace try to seek legal liability against OpenAI when it had explicit confirmation that they had been hacked? Because HF understands that it needs OAI and the rest of the AI industry to continue to exist and be in good legal standing

But also, what was the material damage to HuggingFace? AFAICS, it rapidly increased their profile to the point that Jensen claims he paid too much for HF, because he bought right after the hack.

pj_mukh··on SNL Weekend Update: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on A.I.'S Threat to Humanity [video]
Unfortunately, this question was never asked by any news organization or of Coxon as he ran to the press. People who would usually ask to "see the work" never did because it comfortably confirmed their biases.

Specifically, I have no idea what the research says, or even if it exists, I wish we had a system to figure that out instead of exciting Twitter "whistleblower" threads.

But what does it matter? It’s not like that number is based on any science. It’s literally p (doom | vibes).
pj_mukh··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
Real question, what does it matter who’s screaming or not, Isn’t this a legal matter? Are there other extrajudicial actions possible?
pj_mukh··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Are there any public meetings with the developer stepping up and saying “I need to make money, please approve!”. That seems… counter productive
pj_mukh··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Yes. Thank you. And actually, when you have a non-politically charged conversation offline with some of the political operatives that cause these bridge shutdowns, they will admit that this is their goal as well. They know it's ragebait, but bait nonetheless.
pj_mukh··on LA Metro has some of the slowest escalators
I love the ridiculous year end-dates on American infrastructure projects.

"Your grandkids might some day dream of having accessible subway stations" is such a civilizational failure that we've just silently accepted.

pj_mukh··on Does Georgism work? Five years later
Which is maddening, given how much damage these existing policies are doing, and how many other zeitgeist issues (homelessness, affordability, robust economic growth etc) are downstream of this.

I wonder if this movement needs a form of performative extremism somewhere (think bridges being forcibly closed for causes), so that then the mainstream notices the sensible compromise and pushes for it. The YIMBY's have never played Overton Window games, but maybe they need to hold their nose and play it.

pj_mukh··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
So why isn't the suggestion to tax the loan instead of the asset (that is 10x more volatile than say property)?
pj_mukh··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
I dont know why it's so complicated to just say "Money is Money when it's Liquid, tax it then". Any loans on wealth should be taxed..nationwide.

But even in California's case this doesn't feel like anything anybody would object to. Given how much California Billionaires liquidate using loans on their wealth, I bet, they could do a middle class tax cut too to offset it a little bit too.

I am little baffled as to why the politicos haven't latched on to this whole-heartedly. You can still proudly say you're taxing Billionaire wealth. Because you are! Just more sensibly.

pj_mukh··on Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta
Bit of a Gish galloping happening here. None of the content/video mentioned in these articles are shown to be non-consensually shared (which is the wink wink suggestion here). I have no doubt Meta has contractors world wide

Meta's pretty explicit about asking for opt-in and laying out exactly how your videos are used as part of onboarding.
