pizzathyme··on The ex-CIA agents deciding Facebook's content policy (2022)
My understanding was in the US, they can openly criticize the government

You are saying that is inaccurate? Or you are talking about a different type of censorship?

pizzathyme··on 36B solar mass black hole at centre of the Cosmic Horseshoe gravitational lens
Definitely a dumb question but I had read "a teaspoon of black hole is more dense than Mt Everest" or something like that.

The near-vacuum atmosphere of Mars seems very light...? What fundamental concept am I misunderstanding?

pizzathyme··on I gave the AI arms and legs then it rejected me
In my 6 jobs in my career from college internship to startups to Big Tech, I have never gotten a job from sending an application into a site. It's always been through (somehow) tracking down a person to speak to and get a referral.

I would recommend that here. There's no reason why Anthropic couldn't use your talents! See if you can find a friend-of-a-friend who is there, and then do a phonecall with them.

pizzathyme··on Genie 3: A new frontier for world models
This is an incredible artifact.
pizzathyme··on Genie 3: A new frontier for world models
I've tried and failed to find a good starting point for his ideas. Do you recommend any?
pizzathyme··on Genie 3: A new frontier for world models
This is surprisingly a great analogy because millions of people still run every week for their own benefit (physical and mental health, social connection, etc).

I wonder if mental exercises will move to the same category? Not necessarily a way to earn money, but something everybody does as a way of flourishing as a human.

pizzathyme··on Microsoft tops $4T in valuation: Great news for MSFT, not so great for workers
That number seems completely arbitrary. Why not $10 trillion or $1 quadrillion?
pizzathyme··on Show HN: Tiny logic and number games I built for my kids
Have to ask: How old are your kids? Very fun puzzles! Do they like them?
pizzathyme··on Why you can't color calibrate deep space photos
The question that the general public always wants answered is roughly, "If I was floating in a safe glass bubble in outer space looking at this object with my eyes, what would I see?"

Does anyone know the answer to this? Would it just be black? Or just a bright white star?

pizzathyme··on Blip: Peer-to-peer massive file sharing
Looks amazing! Maybe a dumb question: why isn't Dropbox doing this? Why did you all need to leave to make this a reality?
pizzathyme··on Show HN: I built an AI agent that helps me invest
I think others are asking more about the real-world investment value of this, not the technical implementation.

What actual trades were made by the user/creator? What was the ROI? How did profitability compare to their returns before using this tool?

With today's LLM's it's easy for anyone to generate a 20-page "report" with a analysis about investments. But a report that, when followed, actually gives you above-average returns? No one has shown evidence of that yet.

pizzathyme··on How I keep up with AI progress
Exactly. I have been questioning the need to "keep up". As the best AI innovations arrive, the ones that are useful will eventually make their way to the mainstream (and me). I didn't "keep up" with the nascent development of spreadsheets or Google Docs. Once they were widely used, I adopted them just fine, and haven't missed out on anything.

Unless you are building an AI startup furiously searching for PMF before your runway expires, I don't see the urgency.

pizzathyme··on Tools: Code Is All You Need
100% agreed - he mentions 3 barriers to using MCP over code: "cost, speed, and general reliability". But all 3 of these could change by 10-100x within a few years, if not months. Just recently OpenAI dropped the price of using o3 by 80%

This is not an environment where you can establish a durable manifesto

pizzathyme··on I built something that changed my friend group's social fabric
I wish discord would just implement this as a setting.
pizzathyme··on A new pyramid-like shape always lands the same side up
Couldn't you achieve this same result with a ball that has one weighted flat side?

And then if it needs to be more polygonal, just reduce the vertices?

pizzathyme··on Mapping LLMs over excel saved my passion for game dev
I agree, this sounds very interesting and I'd like to apply to my projects. But without seeing the input and output it's up to me to creative think of abstract examples
pizzathyme··on Meta announces Oakley smart glasses
I agree. Some threshold in the past few years has been passed. I wear mine every day (and I don't wear glasses normally). Music, photos, videos all super useful. AI is lacking but will get better. Feels cool and not-embarassing in public

I think that they've done it, this is Meta's iPod

pizzathyme··on Seedance 1.0
With enough context fed into the model of what you react to, the content will be so mesmerizing that you won't be able to look away

This is chilling and also seems inevitable long term

pizzathyme··on Dolly Parton's Dollywood Express
Exactly, more rails would not be useful because there is lower density in the US. Denmark is 141 persons/km^2, whereas the U.S. is about 36 persons/km^2 (census data).

Even if you built train lines everywhere outside urban areas, any stop you step off at would still require a 20 minute drive to get to where you are going. (Or in your case 15!)

pizzathyme··on Dolly Parton's Dollywood Express
Is the suggestion here to build more subways/rails? The problem is that more rails would not be useful because there is lower density in the US. Denmark is 141 persons/km^2, whereas the U.S. is about 36 person(census data).

Even if you built train lines everywhere outside urban areas, any stop you step off at would still require a 20 minute drive to get to where you are going.

pizzathyme··on OpenAI to buy AI startup from Jony Ive
The other play is they build chatgpt.com into a destination. Two major data points to this: [1] Over 400M weekly actives, and [2] recent reports that chatgpt will be adding X.com / social network style features
pizzathyme··on After months of coding with LLMs, I'm going back to using my brain
I had a similar experience as the author. I've found found that cursor / copilot are FANTASTIC at "smart autocomplete", or "write a (small function that does this)" and quick viral prototypes.

But after I got a week into my LLM-led code base, it became clear it was all spaghetti code and progress ground to a halt.

This article is a perfect snapshot of the state of the art. It might improve in the future, but this is where it is in May 2025.

pizzathyme··on Baby is healed with first personalized gene-editing treatment
In real life, anyone who is a parent knows you would welcome a better chance for your child without hesitation
pizzathyme··on HealthBench – An evaluation for AI systems and human health
Non-clinicians are using ChatGPT every day now to try to find assistance (right or wrong) to real-life medical problems. This is a great evaluation set that could prevent a lot of harm
pizzathyme··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
If Youtube is going the way of buggies in 1910, then there is a lot of money to be made by shorting their stock right away. If that's your position I would go big

Clearly people don't want what OP shared. My main point was that they are aware of that, yet they are still optimizing for their company's performance

pizzathyme··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
Don't disagree at all
pizzathyme··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
This is certainly true. UX design and user feedback is only one piece of Google's decision making process
pizzathyme··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
I always laugh at these shots from the hip criticizing YouTube and Google. As though Google doesn't have a entire team of data scientists and top tier engineers managing this experiment and driving it to optimal results. (Spoiler: they do)

If you don't like the service, you can stop using it. And if you do, they have already factored that into their metrics guardrail, and it was the right decision.

pizzathyme··on The Books of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
As a kid, I always thought the “coding language” of magic in these books was clever. If you know the secret magical name of something, then you can speak to it in the secret magical language, and it will obey you. This had built-in scaling limits, for example, if you wanted to conjure a tidal wave, then you would need to know the names of millions of droplets of water, which naturally means a tidal wave spell is going to be very long winded and difficult to cast.
pizzathyme··on The side hustle from hell
Rather than being a cautionary tale, I actually think this is the kind of misadventure that everybody should have. You learn so much about the real world from a failed startup where nothing is done right (at least I did). Your early 20s are the perfect time to do it with little risk. Lots of painful memories I laugh at later. Highly recommended.
