Tried Zed some time back, the performance was pretty good as compared to VS Code, though gave up when they chose to implement other fancy / collaborative features before implementing the most basic requirement from an 'editor' - Search and Replace. Contacted them but there was no response. Looks like they have replace now, so worth trying again (still hard to give up all the features of Sublime Text yet).
While I understand your argument about IE6 which was shipped with Windows, Chrome didn't have that advantage for a long time - it's only now that Android phones and Chromebooks are shipped with it, but I don't know of a single person who does not download Chrome on their Windows Desktop too - even now when Edge is based on Chromium! Firefox has always been my primary browser (it still is, I'm typing this in Firefox), but say what you may, Chrome has taken the internet forward in many aspects. I work on an in-browser CAD tool, and I can see how vastly better Graphics performance is in Chrome when compared to Firefox for example (and it's just one example).
But then again, everyone says Google is evil to have made their own browser, but most of the world is using it - one would guess they must have done some good things with it (so taking humanity forward in some capacity etc.). Some are even criticizing Google from its own browser - I hate the fact that it made Firefox lose their market share, but I also understand it can't all be because the big corp brainwashed everyone (sure it would be a significant part though).
This always surprises me. While as an Indian I'm ashamed of the level of corruption we have in every government system of ours, at least it's still called corruption (and is illegal) what US calls lobbying (and is legal).
I don't understand. Youtube is not forcing you to watch their videos, and that they show ads is an information you are already aware of before watching them. So I don't understand how it is YouTube's "Entitlement".
Ok, I don't know if I'm doing it correctly, but there is no way to type some letters to jump to the folder starting with that name right? Also, no Cut/Copy/Paste/Delete yet I guess. Also, the one reason I run away from Finder on macOS is that it has no way to set 'Enter' to open or 'Delete' to delete files, and refuses to simply add a 'Cut' and paste option for files and folders (I know how to 'Move' after 'copying', but that's not the point, the point is that it's just stupid). Please make sure you don't do those mistakes. Keep whatever defaults you want, but at least have an option to enable 'Cut', 'Open', and 'Delete' with their expected buttons.
It's funny how they show USB-C as a giant leap forward while they were literally forced to use that port and were never interested in doing it otherwise. All that transfer speed bump they're now advertising with USB-C, would they admit that they were keeping their customers away from it just so that they could use their custom port and create an entire accessory ecosystem around it?
When I moved back to India from the US, I was pleasantly surprised how cheap and fast the internet here is (which should have been the characteristic of a developed nation like USA). I currently have a 300 Mbps home broadband, TV, Unlimited calling cellphone with 1.5 GB mobile data everyday, and an unlimited calling landline phone all in one plan in less than 21 USD a month.
That's why I always believe Google's Glasses and their vision were way ahead of their time - they were not strapping a big device to your head like all these other ones. Unfortunately, for legal and whatever reasons it didn't take off. But as a person who already wears prescription glasses I'd have definitely wanted to wear that instead.
It might be great or not, the title is NOT correct and is blaming the government without having any proofs. Posts like these should not even be allowed here. This is actually propaganda.
Wait. It's shared here as a matter of fact, is it proven that it was done by some 'IT Cell' of the ruling party? It's HN, not Reddit, Twitter, Facebook or Whatsapp. I'm not denying their existence, but unless it's official or proven information please don't share it here.
I understand it could have just been a 'regular' automated task and not necessarily an LLM task (at least if tried hard enough). But isn't the general promise of these LLMs that we don't have to program a separate automated task for everything? And my query is precisely the kind of research I want the LLMs to carry out for me online. An educated assistant (natural intelligence) will do this task for me pretty easily, and I just want AI to do the same, perhaps much faster and cheaper. Until they can do that they're not impressive enough. :)
I'm not yet, because I haven't got confidence in ChatGPT's answers or abilities so far (e.g. the fact that it 'lies' with a straight face when it doesn't know the answer is especially troubling for me). I hope ChatGPT 5 or 6 are much better in this regard, and I will very gladly pay for it then.
Hmm ... I wish with all these new agents my regular tasks become a bit easier, but so far it didn't work, it 'ran out of loops in the free plan'. Not going to pay without even executing one successful example (I know this one is a pretty tough problem, but I was willing to give some easier 'research' tasks too). My query was :
"Find out the cheapest per unit Pampers New Born diapers from the ones available on amazon.in, flipkart.com, bigbasket.com, dmart.in, firstcry.com considering all the available card discounts, coupon codes, shipping and other charges etc. "
Well, at least it was some hours on near-latest phones with specialized hardware and software (latest and Pixel phones are missing from the study for some reason). Looks much safer compared to Apple's FaceID which was unlocked under 120 seconds with no special hardware attached to the phone (reported by the same Security Lab Tencent):

I think Firefox users have now reduced to geeks and some 'real FOSS' enthusiasts etc. I still use Firefox as my primary browser, but I haven't seen any non-tech person installing it for a long time now. They all just search for Chrome and download, install that. So in today's times if someone's installing Firefox I'd say they'd mostly know their way around.
That's exactly what I think. I personally also find him very uninspiring, it looks like he's basically just 'maintaining' the company on auto-pilot mode. No out of the world new ideas, and now the company is losing on the very field they were seemingly far-far ahead than the rest of the world.
Couldn't have explained better! Just because some people are well accustomed to working in bash files and terminal, they assume it's a child's play for everyone. There are multiple types of shells alone with each having different syntaxes for something as simple as redirecting error/output to a file. First you'd have to explain to them what is a shell, before telling them why the solution given on Stack Overflow doesn't work for them.
I use all three - Windows, Linux and macOS for work (and macOS and Windows for personal use). Last I had these problems with Linux was 2022. We don't use the more user focused Ubuntu/Fedora distros. We use RHEL/CentOS which still look like ages old even with their latest versions, and suffer from the same problems. I'd love to personally use Linux because it's much faster than Windows, but at the same time I'm talking about the lack of integration like you delete the file in the Terminal, and the 'built-in' File explorer doesn't get that news (even in 2022), the display drivers have problems every time IT updates the OS kernel (hardware acceleration stops working), every software that works on it looks again from pre-historic times and for any serious development work it causes more problems than it solves which is reflected in all the third party libraries that we use which have something or the other 'not supported' on Linux.
These kind elitist comments surprise me. Tech should make one humble, you seem to have gone the other way round. This was the kind of condescending behavior I was talking about in my comment, and you just proved my point. Calling others 'highly paid wage slaves' and thinking they have no love for tech without even knowing them because they criticized your favorite OS? It can't get more lower class than that. And what has 'loving tech' got to do with starting a business? So only those who start a business are worthy of being on 'Hacker News' in your esteemed opinion?
I'm totally for computer tinkering, but at the age of learning something like 'MIT Scratch' or even C/C++/Python, if they have to deal with all these problems, a lot of potential computer scientists might actually get discouraged and end up giving it all up thinking 'Computers' are very difficult.
Anyone who's used Windows recently can say it happens a _lot_ less now. And also, I see not a "Blue" screen of death, but other screens of death on my work macbook all the time (all official 2019 MBP, no customizations). :| .. It just suddenly restarts and then opens up a 'white window of death' to make me report the kernel problems to Apple. I have saved a few screenshots as well.
I do. We don't use Ubuntu / Fedora. We use the stone-age RHEL/CentOS distros. AND we have NVidia drivers to worry about almost everyday. And all our work-arounds go away as soon as IT updates the Linux Kernel. That never happens on Windows machines. It's such a PIA, among other problems that of-course our IT doesn't have any knowledge of, so we have to find the solutions ourselves.
