“low standards”

Again, love when people spout bullshit.

Are you ever going to elaborate on what is so “low standard” about Obsidian, or just going to keep speaking in vagueness?

pityJuke··on The issue of anti-cheat on Linux (2024)
a) are they now supporting any KB+M peripheral?

b) should’ve specified this is the bigger problem. glad to see from the other comment bf6 is coming on-board, but VALORANT doesn’t and that’s probably the quintessential title for this.

pityJuke··on The issue of anti-cheat on Linux (2024)
Honestly, if consoles were willing to accept KB+M (and gyro aiming for that matter), I’d be completely proposing that competitive live service titles mostly abandon PC, except for a small “probably infested with cheaters” base.
pityJuke··on Addiction alloys: the cross-promotion of internet compulsions
Something I've been ruminating on for a bit. Not exactly sure I've exactly nailed the ideas here, but interested in what people think. I also imagine there are other examples of this behavior I haven't caught.

> Since the product isn't usable without community extensions

Love when people just spout straight bullshit without any substance to it.

Gladly using Obsidian with no community extensions. It is completely usable as a PKM without any additions.

pityJuke··on "Remove mentions of XSLT from the html spec"
It seems like they've already created a browser extension that'll act as as polyfill [0]. Chrome just don't want to ship it & maintain it. Which is very similar to Ruffle.

pityJuke··on 'Crazy conspiracist' and 'unhinged comedian': Grok's AI persona prompts exposed
“ I want your answers to be f—ing insane. BE F—ING UNHINGED AND CRAZY. COME UP WITH INSANE IDEAS. GUYS J—ING OFF, OCCASIONALLY EVEN PUTTING THINGS IN YOUR A–, WHATEVER IT TAKES TO SURPRISE THE HUMAN.”

Yes this is peak comedy. I’m so glad the future is being driven by people with these comedic sensibilities.

pityJuke··on Counter-Strike: A billion-dollar game built in a dorm room
Arms Deal came out in 2013 [0]. 1.6 came out in 2000, so that is 13 years (not considering CSS came out in 2004, and CS:GO was in 2012, without any monetization).

Fortnite is coming onto 8 years old now. The idea of it being around for 5 years longer is not particularly alien.

[0]: https://blog.counter-strike.net/2013/08/7425/

e: Actually, I should really be focusing on the time from Arms Deal to the present, which is 12 years. So, Fortnite has even less time to catch up to CS' current lifespan with gambling.

pityJuke··on Counter-Strike: A billion-dollar game built in a dorm room
> sole reason Counter-Strike still exists today

Every other live service manages with non-gambling skins. They have their own problems (usually around FOMO), but nowhere near the literal gambling that is CS.

> Valve would have shut the door on the game

In terms of not having any developers on it, sure, not impossible.

> (and quite possibly the company entirely)

Ahahahaha come on man, even without CS, Valve is one of the most profitable companies of all time.

pityJuke··on Counter-Strike: A billion-dollar game built in a dorm room
> I would love to see a modern shooter with nice graphics and self hostable servers in the same niche as the old CS.

I mean, that is still CS: you want one without gambling (which is reasonable!)

pityJuke··on Counter-Strike: A billion-dollar game built in a dorm room
> At the end of June, Le was asked to join a handful of professional gamers onstage for a round of Counter-Strike at a game conference in Austin, Texas.

Conference isn't really the right term here: it's more equivalent to a sports tournament (it was the BLAST Austin Major, with a $1.2 million prize pool). Also, round is confusing given the dual usage, he played for an entire showmatch.

pityJuke··on US influencer stranded in Antarctica after landing plane without permission
So, the critical update here is that Chile are agreeing to letting him leave, provided he donates $30k to charity.

That is extremely generous of them, considering what appears to have been the insanity of his stunt.

pityJuke··on High-severity WinRAR 0-day exploited for weeks by 2 groups
> The exploit abused that feature to trigger a previously unknown path traversal flaw that caused WinRAR to plant malicious executables in attacker-chosen file paths %TEMP% and %LOCALAPPDATA%, which Windows normally makes off-limits because of their ability to execute code.

This seems... wrong? Isn't %LOCALAPPDATA% commonly used to store executables for programs that want to install for a single user and not the whole computer? An example of which includes Google Chrome?

pityJuke··on Goodbye, Six-Figure Tech Jobs. Young Coders Seek Work at Fast-Food Joints
I dread to think what my opportunities would have looked like had I entered the industry even 1 year later.

All the sympathies to these people.

pityJuke··on Microsoft became incompetent in IT
Owning your own domain is good enough for me - I use Apple to host my mail, but should they suspend me I’d at least be able to move the domain to another provider.

I should consider a solution for backing up my email, though.

pityJuke··on What is X-Forwarded-For and when can you trust it? (2024)
Brings back memories of changing the header to watch South Park episodes for free (the official site was very vulnerable to just changing the header to a NA IP).
pityJuke··on [dead]
What is the source for this? Where is this leaked memo?

I’m not trusting this site. I cannot find a single other source indicating Mamdani’s Instagram was ever even suspended.

pityJuke··on QuakeNotch: Quake Terminal on your MacBook's notch
No comment on the app, but the website was not scrolling smoothly on my iPhone 15 Pro.
pityJuke··on The Minecraft game score unexpectedly became big business for its composer
It is incredible how Minecraft, and the soundtrack in particular, was created by unknown part timers.

A remix of Mice on Venus [0] is one of the few things that can make me cry on cue. There is something so powerful about it.

Doesn’t help it is often used in Technoblade tributes because of this video. [1]

pityJuke··on It's rude to show AI output to people

pityJuke··on Anthropic Hires Back Two Coding AI Leaders from Cursor Developer Anysphere

> clearly a different product with the same name

The main link goes to the original website.

Feels like a spam site, pumping out websites for anything that becomes relevant. Maybe it'll eventually swap out to the actual scam.

EDIT: Also, the fake as fuck numbers. It's been out for a day!

pityJuke··on ICANN fumes as AFRINIC offers no explanation for annulled election
I'm interested why Cloud Innovation say that this is also their preferred ending [0]. A double-bluff?

[0]: https://cloudinnovation.org/cloudinnovation-call-AFRINIC-win...

pityJuke··on ICANN fumes as AFRINIC offers no explanation for annulled election
As someone entirely unfamiliar with everything here: can ICANN actually do anything to resolve this situation, and I imagine, ideally retrieve the IPs from this unsavoury individual?
pityJuke··on "Just Fucking Ship It" (Or: On Vibecoding)
You need to fix your default branch: it is main, and you've committed everything to master.
pityJuke··on uv: An extremely fast Python package and project manager, written in Rust
Are the lock files standardised, or a uv-specific thing?
pityJuke··on I wrote my PhD Thesis in Typst
Glad to hear Typst has people doing serious work with it.

I’ve been able to avoid LaTeX. At uni, I went for org-mode -> LaTeX, which was OK except when my .emacs file was filling up with LaTeX stuff to make random stuff work. To be honest, that means I probably can’t even compile it again if I wanted to.

Typst has been awesome (always ran into LaTeX just being horribly inconsistent when layout stuff) when I’ve used it. Hope it continues.
