pithon··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
Risk of... dying? Being injured? Being hospitalized? Developing a life-threatening clot? Also it's missing a word "from" but I worked that out. Thanks for your contribution.
pithon··on US agencies call for pause in Johnson & Johnson vaccine
"That’s the same risk as driving London to Liverpool"

This was the first one your website presented and I have no idea what it means.

pithon··on There's another right to repair fight brewing in Massachusetts
I filled out my ballot today voting yes for the right to repair!
pithon··on How to say no, for the people pleaser who always says yes
I've been complimented on my ability to say 'no.' It's incredibly useful to ensure I'm spending my limited time doing things that are impactful and worthwhile.
pithon··on Surviving Depression
There absolutely is help- two of my bosses have gone through this and were able to give me first-hand advice as my son has been going through this over the last year as well. We learned about the different between a psychiatric hospital, a residential program, a partial hospitalization program, and therapy. Some hospitals are much better than others, which can give some the impression of hopelessness (some just seem to be holding places, others really have good programs).

I sincerely hope you reach out if you're having trouble or even just seem to feel hopeless, even while feeling content about that belief.

pithon··on What DoorDash pays, after expenses, and what’s happening with tips
I had DoorDash, using my account, deliver to my friend's place once. He now gets mail spam in my name at his house.
pithon··on Equifax removed the $125 claim payout option after millions submitted claims
> The public response to the settlement has been overwhelming. Millions of people have visited this site in just the first week. Because the total amount available for these alternative payments is $31 million, each person who takes the money option is going to get a very small amount. Nowhere near the $125 they could have gotten if there hadn’t been such an enormous number of claims filed.

What a joke.

pithon··on The new features of Fortran 2018 [pdf]
Note there's also `np.empty(size)` if you know you're going to initialize all the values in a later step, in which case it can skip assigning zeros to every element.
pithon··on SR-71's “R2-D2” Could Be the Key to Winning Fights in GPS Denied Environments
Even quantum sensors will need something (i.e., another sensor) to stabilize the vertical channel. The effect of imperfectly compensating the gravity component out of the specific force measurements from the accelerometers leads to a positive feedback loop. Finite precision arithmetic and fundamental algorithm error (solving the Bortz equation) leads to errors that will grow in the horizontal direction as well.
pithon··on My Sony "smart" TV has updated itself and tried to force me to use a new app
About a month ago I got a TCL 55P607 based on a review by the Wirecutter: https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-lcd-led-tv/

I absolutely love that media interfaces are getting snappy again (e.g., no more hitting a button on the remote and waiting 4 seconds to it do finish opening a menu).

pithon··on NASA Scientists Suggest We’ve Been Underestimating Sea Level Rise
Many nonlinear problems can be approximated as linear and in this case the rough sea level rise (think altitude/distance) so ridiculously dwarfs the radius of the earth (the square in your argument) that the linear approximation is pretty good.
pithon··on The Shipping News Suggests Economic Weakness
Why zoom out and lose the fidelity? So people who don't actually pay any attention to the axes/labels/etc. can walk away with a slightly better understand of the graph with their casual glance than they otherwise would have?
pithon··on It’s time for the Uber of air travel
Yes, the average person has a vehicle.
pithon··on How to Reject Engineering Candidates
Writing, in general, is an activity that engineers usually put at the bottom of the priority list but it's when you write that you actually organize your thoughts and think things through. The process of writing the rejection email, even if you don't actually send it, is likely to make you think about why you're rejecting them, and formalize/ reinforce concepts and ideas to keep in mind at the next interview.
pithon··on Ten Years of Git: An Interview with Linus Torvalds
I haven't used hg but as a Git user who uses this feature several times per day, this would be a complete deal breaker!
pithon··on Ten Commandments of Sushi
"“In the larger sushi shops, the smell of the fish escapes because the ceilings are too high to contain them,” says Yajima-san. “Smaller places are where they serve the best food. Their size captures the flavor.”"

Oh, Christ...

pithon··on Ableton Live Developers at Work [video]
Anyone know what software they're using at 1:53?
pithon··on Show HN: GitSavvy, Git integration in Sublime including per-line staging
I use git-cola every day, very nicely done!
pithon··on “Just remove the duck” (2013)
Sounds like the duck is a fingerprinting honeypot.
pithon··on New police radars can 'see' inside homes
I wouldn't consider the passive/active distinction the definition for 'invasive.' I'd consider thermal imaging from the outside of the home w/out a warrant 'invasive', but a thermal camera is just picking up the heat radiated by your body.
pithon··on The Mysterious Mental Side Effects of Traveling into Space
I used to get this feeling at music festivals (just alcohol, if you're wondering). It's never quite been the same since I got a cell phone. It was very freeing to walk into the crowd and know that I was completely detached from everything except what was immediately around me.
pithon··on Sistine Chapel
I've been looking for Waldo for hours now. No luck.
pithon··on Please stop sending me your shitty Word documents – Coding 2 Learn
I notice that this post has bold-faced section headings, opens with an italicized pair of sentences, has a bulleted list, and quotes that are indicated with a gray vertical bar. The best part is the section title "Plain text should be plain" which is bolded.

The author must think they are a pretty good designer to not use plain text (their conclusion, not mine).

pithon··on New LAX car rental company offers only Audi A4s – and no clerks
I'm all about skipping lines when renting cars, so I like this idea. I have Avis preferred through work and at most airports I just get on the Avis shuttle, they ask my name, and drop me right in front of the car - no lines or signatures required.
pithon··on Fuck the Super Game Boy: Introduction (2010)
It's a bait-and-switch. The headline implies that the article is about X, but it turns out to be about Y.
pithon··on Massive Dosing - the LSD Thumbprint
A compiled executable is nothing more than a series of instructions; why do people have to make it more complicated than it is?

pithon··on The future of GPS
Dead reckoning is subject to cumulative errors, so that would have to be REALLY accurate.
