pitched··on Fable 5 pushed Gemma 4 to 255 tok/s on WebGPU
China is benefiting a lot from releasing the models open-source and those benefits immediately end if they start doing closed-source releases. It would be very short-sighted
pitched··on Anthropic employees accuse Trump administration of targeting them
Without going that far, send a few people a couple hours North instead and serve international customers from Canadian data centers. As far as I understand, it is only blocked in the US, right?
pitched··on Show HN: FablePool – pool money behind a prompt, and Fable builds it in public
I’m on your side in that I would never take a contract to actually do this, but…

If we swapped out the IAM backend for something extremely simple like just private keys (one per allowed service or JWT-style list all services in the key), then we could have something that looks/feels pretty similar. With a 2$ token spend.

Not at all the same but it would look/feel pretty close.

> you might be able to make a version of some small subset of aws services that runs works ok

lol, you’ve got that goblet of koolaid with me! Equal parts horrifying and interesting that it might not be impossible

The good ones all seem to be pointing in the direction of Django. Which, on its own, says a lot about how likely people will care about vibe-coded anything, whether pooled or not.

lol but at least in comes in a nice cup then

This, unfortunately, gets flagged for cyber and you would need to be on the unlocked Mythos.

A lot of AWS is built on open-source. This is obviously ignoring hardware costs. I don’t know if it is all that ridiculous anymore. These models are very good at wiring together open-source systems. The world is crazy right now…

Did it not charge anything for the estimation itself? I wonder what model they’re using for that
pitched··on Canada proposes teen social media ban – with workaround for tech firms
HN is social media. I’m learning this on social media. That’s a good thing. [1]

What alcohol helps with is forming connections with other people. It lowers barriers to sharing and those connections are important. [2]

In a world in the middle of “loneliness epidemics”, these are more important than ever. Getting drunk obviously doesn’t help though. Neither does yelling at everything on Facebook for hours.

pitched··on Canada proposes teen social media ban – with workaround for tech firms
I’m torn on this. On one hand, yes, it is a problem. On the other, it is unenforceable and will make them just be sneaky about it.

I see social media in the same way as alcohol. Mostly good but definitely bad when abused. And we are responsible for teaching kids where that line is and how to navigate consumption to minimize the downsides. A government ban that makes teaching harder is counter-productive, even if I do commend the effort to reduce the harm being done.

Unfortunately, it has become a bit of a “tragedy of the commons” where kids record each other so often, an expectation of being recorded has changed all social dynamics. So a government-mandated ban may help reduce that enough for the issues to be localized and more easily spotted.

pitched··on AWS Bedrock to require sharing data with Anthropic for Mythos and future models
Thank you! I missed this part in all the announcements
pitched··on AWS Bedrock to require sharing data with Anthropic for Mythos and future models
It looks like they’ve been preparing: https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/aws/bedrock-openai-models
pitched··on AWS Bedrock to require sharing data with Anthropic for Mythos and future models
The security boundary that AWS maintains is important in a lot areas, like medical, where the datacenter has to support some specific certifications. It isn’t a choice to pay 10x more in those cases, it is the only option allowed.
pitched··on AWS Bedrock to require sharing data with Anthropic for Mythos and future models
OpenAI just added their own models to Bedrock recently too, making that an easy switch.
pitched··on Show HN: Gitdot – A better GitHub. Open-source, written in Rust
I worry that what they’re trying to say is that it was vibe coded but vibe coded in a language with a pretty solid linter.

What an irony that those exact safety guarantees that made it attractive are now a detriment because they make the project smell like AI.

pitched··on AI is slowing down
The free Chinese models are always approaching frontier-level power. The cost to Enterprise to run these models is where Anthropic and OpenAI are competing against in the long run.
pitched··on When su replaced login for becoming another Unix login
I am getting Forbidden when connecting from a cheap (but Canadian!) VPN but allowed through with a pricier one. So it isn’t geo-based blocking, probably more like a per-IP request limit.
pitched··on When su replaced login for becoming another Unix login
You got it, it’s just ~cks not letting me in. The University itself is still good.
pitched··on When su replaced login for becoming another Unix login
The site is returning Forbidden for me and they seem to have also blocked archive.* sites. A bit of a mean thing for a public university to do.
pitched··on CSS-Native Parallax Effect
When using Z, if the element is close to the bottom of the page, or a very large Z, I found it to increase the length of the scroll bar unexpectedly. Or unexpectedly to me looking for parallax, it would make sense as a normal zoom or scale.
pitched··on What's gonna happen to software engineers?
I like this take a lot. Posting a counter-example not because I disagree but because I think it’s interesting.

Ghostty is a terminal emulator with a pretty good narrative. The author is very accessible on podcasts to go over the story. It is also actually very good though. I think the jump in performance and usability put it on the map before the narrative could help push it further. The product does have to actually be good before the crafted nature can be invested into.

pitched··on What's gonna happen to software engineers?
When you work for someone, you’re selling hours of time. Reducing days means you’re selling fewer hours. That has always been possible but they’ll probably want to pay less.
pitched··on Nvidia announces new AI chip for personal computers
First, make it possible. Then, expand the market. The early adopters help pay R&D for later efforts. Every desk is a good goal, even if not hit by the first doodad.

It just feels too much like what they said about Apple II and early Windows. A play at nostalgia instead putting real thought into it.

pitched··on Nvidia announces new AI chip for personal computers
I would order that in a heartbeat. Even if it required proprietary Chinese-government drivers. I would try to segregate in a VM without internet or something. Please make this happen! Tokens cost too much in the current system.
pitched··on The SLAX Scripting Language: An Alternate Syntax for XSLT
Some examples of where it improves XSLT would be helpful. The first one I found in the docs looks roughly identical: https://juniper.github.io/libslax/slax-manual.html#expressio...
pitched··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
Maybe a better analogy would have been the Balmer curve. I wasn’t trying to imply psychedelics are unhelpful, just that we should be careful of suggesting coding productivity gains while on them.

Also IMO, the Balmer peak is a stronger effect than creatine.

pitched··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
I’m still in the 30s but have found it to lower how much energy it takes to start something, rather than helping me stay focused. Same sort of idea, being in a higher-energy state, just pointing out that age doesn’t seem to be a requirement to get any benefit. I do also respond well the low-carb diets and heat that a lot from pro-creatine people so maybe there’s a connection to diet.
pitched··on Creatine raises brain energy levels and slows cognitive decline: study
I hear about tech bros taking creatine these days with the tone of voice that they use to talk about microdosing. So I can’t imagine it having zero effect.

What I worry about more is that it has more to do with fixing a deficiency. That being deficient in creatine causes a cognitive loss more than supplementing causes a boost.

pitched··on Cheese Paper: a text editor specifically designed for writing
“Ah humanity!” Ya, knowing this would have shaped my own reading a lot. I wonder though, if it wasn’t intentional, if the structure came from AI which would have had this in its training data. Asking one for help with outlining a story feels pretty innocuous.
