pitaj··on After decades, FDA moves to pull ineffective decongestant off shelves
It's probably the guaifenesin (Mucinex) that you're feeling.
pitaj··on After decades, FDA moves to pull ineffective decongestant off shelves
They make twelve hour extended release versions now. There are twelve per box and you can get three boxes at a time. That's 18 days but only if you take them twice a day, which you probably shouldn't if you like sleeping. If you take one a day, that's a whole month's worth.
pitaj··on Trump wins presidency for second time
It will be overturned on appeal
pitaj··on U.S. chip revival plan chooses sites
My understanding is that Micron only does R&D in Boise, they don't run any production manufacturing there.
pitaj··on DeskPad – A virtual monitor for screen sharing
> As I understand the issue it’s not that font is too small on my device, it’s that Teams has a tiny viewport and so it gets shrunk down. Most people aren’t doing full screen.

AFAIK, teams literally does not have a way to put the viewport in full screen mode!

pitaj··on (Re)Using rustc components in gccrs
Makes sense
pitaj··on Why the U.S. can't build icebreaking ships
I'm sure the Jones Act still plays a part, leading our domestic shipbuilding capabilities (including military and icebreakers) to atrophy in competitiveness.
pitaj··on Orion, our first true augmented reality glasses
> I don't personally see the appeal of hands-free as a paradigm in most cases. Do we really want people talking on and looking at Zoom as they walk around the office? Or as they drive? Or as they are out shopping

I can see this being extremely useful, especially if the person on the other can see what you're looking at. Interactive remote troubleshooting!

> Can you imagine how goofy you'd look sitting at a coffee shop and just sort of staring into the middle distance and talking, as you take a Zoom call?

No goofier than someone talking through their airpods.

pitaj··on Have you ever seen soldering this close? [video]
I was hooking to see an example of a cold soldier joint. (Applying soldier directly from the iron without heating the pin)
pitaj··on EUCLEAK Side-Channel Attack on the YubiKey 5 Series
They swap your device with an identical replacement that just appears to be broken. You are none the wiser while they clone your keys.
pitaj··on Einstein's Other Theory of Everything
The host of PBS Space Time, Dr. Matt O'dowd, seems to be pretty unbiased.
pitaj··on Extreme Pi Boot Optimization
Doesn't the camera have it's own framebuffer that the MCU can stream? I don't see why the MCU would have to hold the whole frame in memory.
pitaj··on Formal CHERI: design-time proof of full-scale architecture security properties (2022)
Recompiling everything is a non-starter in many cases.
pitaj··on Formal CHERI: design-time proof of full-scale architecture security properties (2022)
Obviously, removing repeated/redundant bounds checks is a basic optimization. That's not what I meant. My point still stands.
pitaj··on Formal CHERI: design-time proof of full-scale architecture security properties (2022)
It's an interesting approach. A hybrid software with limited hardware change is interesting.

> Fil-C will get faster even without architecture help

Only to a point. You'll plateau eventually since you have checks on every dereference.

pitaj··on Man Arrested for Creating Child Porn Using AI
Pedophilia seems, to a large degree, to be under-researched. Mostly because of the taboo, but even questions like "what portion of the general population are sexually attracted to pre-pubescent children" do not have good data.
pitaj··on Banks Are Now Accused of Cheating Customers Billions
Inflation is now below 3%. HYSAs are above 4% right now, so are beating inflation by a good margin.

Of course, changing interest and inflation rates can change that.

pitaj··on Banks Are Now Accused of Cheating Customers Billions
In HYSAs, SoFi gives you 4.6% if you direct deposit every month. The direct deposit doesn't need to be significant, just $1 is enough from what I hear (I do ~$50).
pitaj··on Open source laser microphone picks up laptop keystrokes
Not if it changes every sentence.
pitaj··on I prefer rST to Markdown
I think one of Markdown's biggest mistake was making `*` and `_` interchangeable. It should have been `*bold*` and `_italics_` from the beginning.
pitaj··on Europe is in danger of regulating its tech market out of existence
Comfortable stagnation is not a stable state for a society.
pitaj··on July 2024 Update on Instability Reports on Intel Core 13th/14th Gen Desktop CPUs
> Are they saying that their CPUs are signaling the mainboards to give them too much voltage?

Yes that's exactly what they said.

pitaj··on Why don't we know how antidepressants work yet?
Interestingly, this is not because of toxicity, but because of reduced bloodflow.
pitaj··on $105B Electronics Giant Sony to Launch New Bitcoin Exchange
They make good headphones too. I think that's the only Sony hardware in my house.
pitaj··on FUTO Keyboard
Very cool! Some things missing from Gboard:

- clipboard suggestions

- emoji search

- gif search

- stickers

- Bitmoji integration

pitaj··on New ways to catch gravitational waves
You can detect gravitational waves based on the strain (amplitude) directly, rather than relying on intensity like electromagnetism.

Because the amplitude is inversely proportional to the distance, but intensity is inversely proportional to the distance squared, this could allow for communication over longer distances.

pitaj··on The law should treat personal data like human organs – not for sale
My first thought as well. There's a strong argument against prohibition of the sale of human organs.
pitaj··on TSMC experimenting with rectangular wafers vs. round for more chips per wafer
Ah yeah I wasn't picturing it right in my head. I guess triangles could work, though.
pitaj··on TSMC experimenting with rectangular wafers vs. round for more chips per wafer
It would only require double the cuts, right?
pitaj··on Gilead shot prevents all HIV cases in trial
Close, but it's actually run with two large groups: one that gets the real shot, and one that gets a fake shot. You then compare the two groups, rather than comparing with the population.
