piqufoh··on Next-Generation GPU-Powered EC2 Instances (G3)
P are intended for general-purpose GPU compute applications (and have 1, 8 or 16 GPUs, more RAM and fewer CPUs). Typically you might use these for scientific computing / machine learning / anything CUDA intensive.

G are optimized for graphics-intensive applications (and have 1, 2 or 4 GPUs, less RAM and more CPUs) - you might use these for design work, gaming etc.

piqufoh··on Robert the Robot (1939)
"Someone bet me £5 I could not make a robot in three weeks," inventor Charles Lawson, who had a radio shop, told a newspaper at the time. "I won."
piqufoh··on WanaCrypt0r Ransomworm
Does anyone else find it a little odd that something as big (and corporate as BAE) are running a blog from blogspot on an unsecured domain?

Is this site legitimate?

piqufoh··on Petition against UK Home Office plans for surveillance and encryption backdoors
> 7. To ensure that any hand-over interface complies with any industry standard, or other requirement, specified in the technical capability notice.

... Presumably now that the "industry standard" contains a backdoor, we (the people) can have a backdoor into this hand-over interface too?

piqufoh··on How to Create a Neural Network in JavaScript [video]
I dislike the way some courses insist on using crusty old academic languages to teach subjects that are much better served by modern real world languages. Is it so students are less likely to copy work from the web? Clunky, poorly documented systems putting people off programming and obfuscating the subject being taught seems ridiculous!
piqufoh··on Basecamp Employee Handbook
So I should have spent more time adding that comment; it wasn't intended to be negative. I honestly believe that a company who can adjust their corporate guidelines that quickly is something to be admired, and the fact that they're doing it on such an important topic is excellent news.
piqufoh··on Basecamp Employee Handbook
Wow! What a great company :-D

Under parental leave;

> You may also choose to take an additional 8 weeks leave unpaid. Note that this does not guarantee your employment. We're simply keeping your job open for an additional 8 weeks, unless your position becomes redundant.

Is it just me, or does that sound a little harsh? (Maybe I'm used to UK workers rights) Isn't this exactly the reason why many parents don't take the parental leave they probably should? ie that they fear they will become obsolete simply from not being in the office...

piqufoh··on Cycling to work can cut cancer and heart disease, says study
Also bamboo (I have Bamboo viscose (70%) and Organic Cotton (30%) shirts) - the bamboo material has excellent wicking (so much less icky than pure cotton) is super soft and I've never had a problem with odour (unlike with tech fabrics) - so long as they're washed every other day.

I've got three shirts (purchased from Amazon before a trip to SE Asia) and they've been worn every week for the last four years. Despite the odd moth-like hole they're doing great and are excellent for cycling / working out.

piqufoh··on Horlicks, a drink Brits go to bed with and Indians wake up with
In the UK Horlicks is largely marketed as a comfort drink (ie to relax and soothe you) and isn't advertised as having any 'special powers' - but then advertising rules in the UK can be pretty strict when compared to other places. It's interesting to see differences between markets (hence this article I guess).
piqufoh··on Ask HN: Why aren't websites adopting client certs in lieu of passwords?
I've just set that up, thanks - the UX is brilliant, exactly what's needed to increase adoption. Of course, it requires that you've gone through the WhatsApp phone app setup, but I'm sure this model could be applied on an equivalent system - especially as smart phones are almost ubiquitous now.
piqufoh··on Pipfile for Python
That sounds like a terrible idea - especially if you don't know if you can trust the source of the file.
piqufoh··on All Olympic gold medal winners in the 100m sprint compared in one race
Pretty neat, but it's not all olympic gold medal winners, we're neglecting a significant half of the population. Where are the women?
piqufoh··on Just A New Fractal Detail In The Big Picture (2015)
Or - you could design the building you want, any way you want - and the AI takes over when you're done to make the design is possible. Boring / difficult / specialist things like load bearing calculations, material strength, plumbing routing etc. are done for you. A bit like Ripley's exosuit, but for your mind!
piqufoh··on How I Cracked a Keylogger and Ended Up in Someone's Inbox
That's a great little story, interesting to read how these sorts of scams are carried out, but I also found the code analysis and decompilation tale fun!
piqufoh··on Things to avoid in Docker containers
I've run simple SMTP from a container and not had any issues. I've not tried a more complex stack (but I have thought about it... ) and I was looking at this project

https://github.com/tomav/docker-mailserver

I'm afraid I can't account for it - having never tried it, but it looks like the sort of thing you might be interested in!

PS If you are a newbie, do try something simple first - it took a while to get my head around the differences in the docker tooling (for example this project uses docker-compose which is another tool on top of the docker cl tool).

EDIT: Ooh - a tutorial

piqufoh··on Python hasattr() Considered Harmful
I think it's usually better to be safe than sorry. If the community favours the second approach it's probably because they're unaware of the side-effects (hence this article) or because they're writing Python 3 - as they should be.
piqufoh··on Scientist says researchers in immigrant-friendly nations can't use his software
He blocked users in the US for some other inane reason a year or so ago. Treefinder (the software in question) hasn't been updated for several years and has been surpassed by other (better) tools, anyone still using it would be doing so out of habit rather than it providing any insightful edge.

It seems Jobb is ignorant and racist, and this article has no tangible scientific angle - it's just stirring up controversy.

piqufoh··on 14-Year-Old Boy Arrested for Bringing Homemade Clock to School
Exactly. To quote the Police spokesman; "He kept maintaining it was a clock, but there was no broader explanation" and "The concern was, what was this thing built for?"

Why shouldn't he make his own clock?! Why does there need to be a 'broader explanation'? How can one develop an interest in anything if you must first provide an adequate explanation? sigh

piqufoh··on A Ghost Ship Drifting Through International Waters
I think that's actually the activation energy. Entropy is a measure of disorder - it's a count of the number of different ways something can be arranged.
piqufoh··on Gotty – Share your terminal as a web application
I'm presenting a 101 python course tomorrow, I've just spotted this and I'm going to give it a go! Looks like it would be pretty cool (tmux!)
piqufoh··on Ask: Do you still find any benefits in using handwriting?
That's an interesting point about the tablets - I don't think that would bother me so much. Maybe my laptop paranoia is related to the screen being hidden... Not that I would (or probably could) look at someone else's screen as they type, but having a horizontal note taking surface seems less like you're hiding away from the conversation. Or maybe I'm just over thinking it now.
piqufoh··on Ask: Do you still find any benefits in using handwriting?
Meetings! I always make sure I have a pen/pencil and notebook/piece of paper when I show up for an in-person meeting.

Maybe it's just me, but if I'm trying to explain an idea to someone and they're busy tapping away at their keyboard it really bugs me. Are they making notes on what I'm saying? Or are they checking in on HN? Ditto for the rare occasion when I'm in a dull meeting with a laptop - it's really difficult for me not to browse my inbox should a message show up, and then I think about a reply, and then I'm lost...

I find physical handwritten notes in a meeting is less distracting for both the speaker and the listener.

piqufoh··on Sourceforge is currently down
Everything 404s for me now. I'm surprised how many sites I frequently visit are hosted on SF - with all the recent controversy I thought it was a dead duck...
piqufoh··on Show HN: Who Is Hiring Explorer
