pipingdog··on Stonks Are What You Can Get Away With: NFTs and Financial Nihilism
> Financial nihilism

Financialism is economic nihilism.

pipingdog··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
I have personally owned an Aeron, my employer uses the Herman Miller Celle, which is also very nice. For COVID WFH, I bought a Secretlabs Titan, and am very happy with it. I am a tall person though. They make a smaller model as well.
pipingdog··on The Document Culture of Amazon
How many "come prepared" meetings have you had where everyone in attendance had prepared? This format gives the space to read and discuss. Everyone has the same opportunity (often, the people with the least time to prepare in advance would be the people you most want feedback from).

The other interesting dynamic is that in many cases the eventual audience for the doc under review is an executive, and the discussion has the goal of refining it for that audience.

pipingdog··on RFC for 700 HTTP Status Codes (2012)
Isn't 759 just a special case of 754?
pipingdog··on Good and Bad Elixir
Elixir does not have a return keyword.
pipingdog··on 44% of older millennials already have a chronic health condition
44% of older millennials are _being treated_ for chronic health problems.
pipingdog··on The Edges of Our Universe
There isn't really any sort of distinct boundary between "you" and the "rest" of the universe.
pipingdog··on What does a PGP signature on a Git commit prove?
The trick is to consider the key invalid for use in signing after it expires, but still valid for verification after that time. Signatures produced by that key can be considered valid well after the key itself has expired. For that to work, you need to have some confidence that the signature was produced at a given time, which is what third-party time stamping authorities (TSA) do. You send your signature to a TSA, which validates the signature, and that the key is valid at the current time, and the TSA counter signs.
pipingdog··on English is relatively easy to learn, but not to master (2018)
Trying to check into a hotel in Glasgow with bad jet lag put me nearly in tears.
pipingdog··on English is relatively easy to learn, but not to master (2018)
Fuckin' who the fuck do you fuckin' think you're fuckin' fuckin' with you fuckin' fuck? Fuck!
pipingdog··on Wooden floors rotted by fungi generate electricity when walked on
You could build large towers out of this material that sway in the wind like trees and generate electricity.
pipingdog··on Ask HN: Any luck negotiating better terms for on-call?
First of all, on-call without the latitude to prioritize operational improvements (making the cause of the pages go away) over feature work is a non-starter.

To address the question in the post title, a team I was on was able to re-negotiate the on-call terms. Our team didn't have any operations to speak of (we just wrote software, and didn't build services) so we were lumped into a rotation for the org we were in. When the pager went off, not only did we not have any familiarity with the system, we didn't have permissions to do anything anyway. We just ended up having to page someone else for every little thing.

We ganged up on management, told them that we simply were not empowered to take any actions during shift to address issues or off shift to improve things, and got taken off that rotation.

Where I'm at now, if someone has a rough night or a couple of rough days, we'll trade part of the shift to give the person a break.

pipingdog··on Rudy the Red Dot
Neat. By the time I got to level 8, I decided it was time to implement turtle commands, which made the solution to level 8 neater, then advancing to level 9 failed to load the puzzle.

Then again... perhaps the js errors on the page are the next level.

pipingdog··on A-Cloud PR/FAQ
This is the format, but the content is unrecognizable as an Amazon PR/FAQ. The PR doesn't tell the story of what customer pain is being addressed, and what customers say about the newly released feature aside from "Customers won't be able to tell the difference" and, later "We're confident that A-Cloud will continue to support [us]."

I'm a leaf-node engineer, and I'd send this PR/FAQ back for significant rework.

pipingdog··on Amazon licenses Slack for workers as Slack adopts AWS video-call tech
> P99

Can confirm, eigen-vector is an Amazonian.

pipingdog··on What Did Bach Sound Like to Bach?
Perhaps parent commenter was in the oil and gas industry.

pipingdog··on Trump threatens to 'close' down social media platforms
Except that President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho had the capacity to realize there was someone smarter than he was and appointed him to solve the problem at hand.
pipingdog··on Show HN: Margin – A lightweight, flexible markup language for structured thought
This shows great promise. I've been looking for various ways to impose semantics on markdown for note taking, and they all turn out to be too complex. This is very simple, has goals which are distinct from markdown, and has the potential to build something queryable.
pipingdog··on Dithering
They appear to have started on this in mid-March, according to https://dithering.fm/, and the titles look to give a good sense of the subject matter.

Other than that, it looks like it's about 15 minutes.

pipingdog··on Time is the only real currency we have
That's generally not that person's only job in the market though. These same people generally have mild janitorial duties, keeping the front-end stocked with supplies, and act as general go-fers (helping people find things, putting things back on shelves, price checks, etc.) This sort of role can make things way more efficient.
pipingdog··on Time is the only real currency we have
The pedestrian signal is a time set aside to meditate on one's humility and patience.
pipingdog··on Time is the only real currency we have
The very first time I typed in a C program to accomplish a specific task and it worked without defects was over a 300 baud dialup connection.

Name the part of the car that enables it to go fast: the brakes.

pipingdog··on “Chaos Engineering” – Published by O'Reilly
Every external dependency you take is a chaos monkey.
pipingdog··on MBONE: The Multicast Backbone (1994)
I remember the MBONE. I was working at a National Lab, and had an SGI Indy workstation with an IndyCam, so I spent some time setting it up.

One day I forgot to close the app when I left for the day, and came back the following day to a NastyGram from Van Jacobson, chastising me for using up bandwidth with an image of my darkened office door for 16 hours.

Good times.

pipingdog··on The Invention of the AeroPress (2014)
The Aeropress makes it so that I can take half the materials that go into a crap-ass urn of coffee and turn them into a kick-ass cup of coffee at work. Godsend. I have a 3rd party metal filter, so I don’t have to worry about running out of the paper filters.
pipingdog··on Tech companies giving away free face masks to combat coronavirus
Exactly. Those are pitchers masks, not catchers masks. On the receiving end you want a resporator and goggles which both seal to the face.
pipingdog··on Worried About Swearing Too Much? Science Says You Shouldn't Be
I went through a phase where I tried to curb my casual profanity and use “dag nab it” or “confound it” or the like.

One day I stubbed my toe and came out with a “gosh fucking darn it!!!!”

pipingdog··on Stack-Oriented Programming
A Brainfuck tape can be thought of as two stacks and a register. ‘<‘ or move-left becomes push the register onto the right stack and pop the left stack into the register.
pipingdog··on Learning at work is work, and we must make space for it
> So what can I do as a manager to make it more “okay” to spend time at work learning?

Be seen doing it yourself.

pipingdog··on Ask HN: How often at work do you use what you've been tested on in interviews?
The point of the question, I imagine (and am giving the interviewer the benefit of the doubt), was to see how the candidate negotiated technical compromises. Merely disagreeing without exploring the reasoning behind it and perhaps finding a different solution together might be a red flag for that environment.
