pinoy420··on Math Academy, part 1: My eigenvector embarassment
If you find that anything besides a poor dry explanation, that is on you. I am sorry this enrages you.

Eigenvalues in an oscillating system describe its resonant frequencies. Its eigenvectors can describe motion at that certain resonant frequency. Imagine a bridge. If wind or traffic match a resonant frequency (eigenvalue) it would be dangerous. Engineers can redesign it to change the corresponding eigenvector and shift the eigenvalue (its resonant frequency for that mode of oscillation) to a safer range. See that bridge in London.

pinoy420··on Math Academy, part 1: My eigenvector embarassment
Skip to last chapter.

> The most notable of these are the synthetic division method for polynomials, the various trigonometric identities, and differentiation of products and quotients of functions.

So he learned nothing you already know at 15. Or younger in Asia.

I think he forgot his goals because it doesn’t even mention eigenvectors.

I am surprised because it is not a difficult thing to understand? It is a vector that when multiplied to a matrix (which in almost all cases would change the direction of the vector), in fact only scales it - and does not change its direction.

The scale factor is its eigenvalue.

So if you hav [[2,0],[0,3]] this should when multiplied to a vector give you [2x,3y]. But if you supply the vector [1,0] or [0,1] you see that the result multiplies that vector by two. So any multiple of these eigenvectors (e.g. [10,0]) will result in a doubling of the vector.

This is not a difficult concept. By any means.

Yeah in theory. In practice that never happens for anything other than a vercel app.

Great video if you like watching videos from the front of BART which is pretty boring tbf. Much better videos of locos travelling through the alps

Open but to what degree. Not saying that I will but can I generate hate speech with it. If not why not. What about other “deemed illegal by non elected officials” activities?

UK lawmakers want to push out making you a terrorist or pedo if you own an llm or genai capable of generating such - i.e. any.

> Imagine if, to make a website, you had to fill out forms and submit them to the government for approval. Sorry, you can't have an unrestricted server connected to the internet, you can just make webpages using an approved website builder GUI using only those images that aren't filtered out by the host.

This is what the new online safety bill has you do though. It is ridiculous. And we can not even vote on it.

pinoy420··on Britain dances to JD Vance's tune as it renames AI institute
Very interesting you have that point of view. What country are you from. The government demonstrably does not pander to the “far right” - whatever that means. The “far right” is anything other than what Kier agrees with. — e.g. you can not speak out against immigration without being anti immigrant (racist - illegal). You can’t be anti same sex areas without being transphobic (also illegal). You can’t be anti {non Christian rooted religion} without being an extremist (illegal). You can’t not speak out against the war in Ukraine or Gaza. Flying a Union flag gets you interest from the police now as it is becoming a symbol of “far right” nationalism

This is not hyperbole.

Against the rules to talk about politics here. But I am interested

> use of AI to create child abuse images

That old rhetoric again.

They are trying to push a law (have pushed?) that brands anyone with an AI capable of generating cp a certified pedo.

So basically any diffusion model. Or in fact any llm? I imagine you can ask an LLM to generate you sketchy svgs.

Secondary thought to that, what about scary illegal texts telling you how to make explosives or hack. Sorry guys better brandish you a terrorist for having a local llm.

Amazing it can do that. How does it work?

That definitely does seem to change its semantics to me. I am not a c expert but this surely has problems the previous one doesn’t?

pinoy420··on A tail calling interpreter for Python (already landed in CPython)
Pattern matching seems like a cool feature that was added just because it was cool. I think the syntax is really odd too - apparently to “be pythonic”. I really see no use for it other than to “look smart”. The fact that case match (switch case is a much better description) is expanded to practically a huge if else is disturbing. Similarly the walrus operator. Other than an answer to “what is a new feature of python that you like” interview trivia question, really, who has actually used it?
pinoy420··on A tail calling interpreter for Python (already landed in CPython)
Annoying. Because it “compiles” to less optimal code than writing it explicitly.
pinoy420··on A tail calling interpreter for Python (already landed in CPython)
The choice of “unique” verbs is weird too. Case match. Try except?
pinoy420··on Physical attractiveness outweighs intelligence in partner selection

pinoy420··on Physical attractiveness outweighs intelligence in partner selection
Honestly yes. Why would I want an ugly partner? Don’t downvote me because you disagree. Engage in conversation.

I want good looking children. I can provide for my family by myself. Why would I care if my partner is was a super genius or not as long as we were both attracted to each other and she wasn’t brain dead?
