pingsl··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card
Why didn't Upwork ask Robin to pay this refund in the first place?

I think Upwork treats freelancers as their employees. So Upwork believes it can manipulate them.

pingsl··on Loving Someone with Depression
Thanks for sharing. This is good.
pingsl··on Loving Someone with Depression
Just before my marriage, I knew my wife had depression. Now we have been together for more than 12 years.

She has never recovered from depression thoroughly, so I have accepted this is a lifelong situation. I agree with the point "when they talk, listen." Because in my experience, the talk will become an argument finally. And that will hurt everyone in this family. So let's listen.

My sincere advice is to think twice when you love someone with depression. It will be very hard.

1. As the partner, you will be in a dilemma. You can not force them to see the doctors or take the medicines, as it's irrespective. And you are not willing to do nothing, you want to help. 2. Sometimes it's a competition. Either you will help your partner out or your partner will destroy you. You might feel the only one you can help is yourself.

So think twice. If you still decide to move on, you need to find out a way to take care of yourself. So that you can stay on this hard journey.

pingsl··on The Exclusive License to Make Money from the Community Contributions
The exvlusive is not enforced by the terms in the CLA. It comes from the fact that contributors only sign up the CLA with the company when making contributions to the company's OSS projects, that company thus claim they have the "exclusion".

pingsl··on A Quadrillion Mainframes on Your Lap
And you believed it?
pingsl··on A Quadrillion Mainframes on Your Lap
I was once a Db2 engineer on the mainframe for decades. A little bit emo when I saw "mainframe" here.

It's hard to say if the success of "mainframe" before has become the reason why IBM has been falling behind in the cloud competition.

Now they call the system engineers "DevOps" people.

Not exactly the same position, but very similar in the ecosystem. Both of them will be blamed when the system is not available.

pingsl··on BlackHole Audio Driver
It did solve my audio issue when broadcasting with OBS on my M1 MacBook.
pingsl··on Why Wolfram tech isn’t open source (2019)
Both of the two blogs are very convincible. The only question to me is which one I should share with my friends?
pingsl··on Why Not Rust? (2020)
I have the same opinion.

The best thing about rust is that rust attracts more people to learn systems programming languages. And thus, there will be more system programmers.

Nowadays, young people favor application programming far more than system programming.

But the problem is there are not that many system programming opportunities.

Then they decided to rewrite the existing systems with rust. We can find a lot of these examples on GitHub. Who knows if it is just a moment of enthusiasm, and how long will it last?

pingsl··on Why start a new database conference?
Will this conference be virtual or in-person?

According to my experience, the in-person conference is much better. A lot of eye contact, more feedback during the talk, and a more active Q&A session.

The virtual conference always ends up just like a Youtube channel...

pingsl··on Ask HN: How do you accept your place in the world?
Will you be a little happier when you accept your current place? You are a nobody at this moment, that's fine. But are you going to stay at that place for years? I don't think so from what you have written here.

What matters is you should get clear about what you want and how you will get there.

pingsl··on NDA - Company Wants Ownership of Every Idea or Invention I've ever had
In this employment, you think you work 40 hours a week. But your employer thinks you work 7 * 24 because even the ideas you get in your spare time belong to the employer.

It doesn't sound like modern work relations.

pingsl··on Ask HN: Why is metaverse land valuable?
I believe the apparent reason is the metaverse land price is going up right now. They are just looking for a trading opportunity。

I don't understand why they sell "land" in the metaverse. It is a new universe by definition. So why don't they sell "star" or "space"?

If people keep mapping the concepts from the real world into the metaverse, the metaverse might become the replica of this world. What's the meaning of this?

pingsl··on PNG Parser Differential
I am on macOS. Safari shows "Hello Apple", while Brave shows "Hello World"...
pingsl··on Reddit files to go public
I once ran some ads on Reddit to promote my website. What I found from the ad report was 99% of Reddit users were using the mobile app.

So I am afraid Reddit won't care about the web UI much now.

pingsl··on I was stuck on a side project for 5 years – how I finished it (2020)
I ate the shed. The course is well designed. Maybe you can add some reminders, e.g. answer should be in a format like 1/5 rather than 0.2. :)
pingsl··on Ask HN: How do you manage direct updates to databases in a production system
If you want to change the data stored in production database tables, following the below rules will be helpful.

1. Please don’t issue I/U/D SQL statements directly. You’d better write up some programs acting as the “revert transactions” to do the data modification. In this way, you don’t need to grant the I/U/D privileges of the production tables to any user IDs. Instead, you give access to those programs. It will help you to remove the human error as much as possible. And the behavior of the programs is more predictable and consistent.

2. You should have a fixed change window for these kinds of data changes. You should not execute those “revert transactions” whenever you want.

3. Then you give the execution access of those programs to the people who need to do the work only during the change window. That is you grant the execute access to the user ID beforehand and revoke the access afterward. Since this is grant/revoke between user ID and programs, it’s much safer. If you have to grant/revoke between user ID and tables, there might be cascade effects.

4. Before the change, capture the “before” data and get ready the fallback script.

5. Don’t forget to turn on the audio options/tools during the change window.

6. If you guys work in a physical office, you can think about binding those revert transactions to a dedicated desktop.

I know these rules are complicated and tedious, but they could protect the team and the data as well :)
