pinaceae··on French election: Macron defeats Le Pen
"For a part, economic dependencies between countries."

You think this happened by accident in Europe? It was a forced development, by very smart people.

Coal/Steel union, EG/EWG, EU.

The US and USSR were duking it out all the time, from Cuba to Vietnam to Afghanistan.

Funny how people assume peace in Europe is the natural order. Holy shit, one of the key members put millions in gas chambers just years before its formation.

Europe went from a genocidal maniac (colonialism, holocaust, etc) to peace in no time.

pinaceae··on French election: Macron defeats Le Pen
The most successful peace project on European soil of the last 1000 years can continue.

Naysayers of the EU need to learn history. It is worth every penny, every inch of inconvenience.

TWO fucking world wars were started by Europe, by nations that formed the Coal/Steel Union after 45 and now enjoy the longest, uninterrupted period of peace since, like, EVER.

The EU's economy is the largest in the world. You don't fuck with that. Except if you're British and can't stomach the end of your empire.

pinaceae··on Why Isn’t Native American Food Hip?
Because strong spices never reached them?
pinaceae··on Stop the Daily Standup Meeting
My team is working on an big application with 100k+ users, worldwide, generating a couple hundred mill in revenue/year. Native apps on multiple mobile platforms, heavy enterprise stuff.

Tried it without stand-ups - doesn't work.

Once you need to coordinate heavily, care about speed and quality at the same time, working in code bases others have written you try to align with others as much as possible.

We do 2-3 stand-ups per week, depending on team preference. M-W-F or T-T.

It works, far less trial and error, far less issues found late in QA.

Daily is too much, that we learned. No structured stand-up at all doesn't work either, humans are not disciplined enough across large teams.

YMMV.

pinaceae··on China's First Jet to Rival Boeing and Airbus Is Helped by U.S. Technology
The WTO was created to prevent these shenanigans. Europe and US play ball, mostly. EU/NAFTA/CETA/TTIP all part of that leveling of the playing field.

China does not play ball, at all. Literally don't give a shit about the Wests opinions or approaches to deals. Perceived in the West as cheating, but that is just a cultural viewpoint.

pinaceae··on China's First Jet to Rival Boeing and Airbus Is Helped by U.S. Technology
Expect the Chinese state to create a very friendly environment for those domestic planes.

Did it in other markets, currently under way against the iPhone.

Airbus and Boeing are toast in China.

pinaceae··on Soylent Closes $50M Series B Round Led by GV
No, it should have a 400$ wifi-enabled ketchup squeezer with the force of a hundred 747s.
pinaceae··on Soylent Closes $50M Series B Round Led by GV
Soylent - We've put SlimFast on the Internet.

And this after JuiceBro. Amazing.

pinaceae··on Americans' Access to Strong Encryption Is at Risk, an Open Letter to Congress
As if they'd give a shit.

Right now they want to un-insure 24mil people, re-introduce the whole pre-existing condition scam.

you really think a ruling class that has no qualms being "pro-life" while denying young mothers healthcare will care about your nerd bullshit?

pinaceae··on Ask HN: Google Doc email virus?
amazing how large this is, our company just a massive wave of those. all from "internal" addresses.
pinaceae··on Modern “Hackintoshes” show that Apple should probably just build a Mac tower
http://www.cisco.com/c/dam/en/us/products/collateral/wireles...

it is real.

pinaceae··on Modern “Hackintoshes” show that Apple should probably just build a Mac tower
The core business model of Apple is to sell hardware.

That simple.

That's why macOS, etc are free now. That's why they're ramping up their enterprise partnerships behind the scenes to ensure big apps run best or even first on iOS and macOS.

IBM, SAP and especially Cisco (the latter has special hooks in the networking stack in iOS, giving Cisco routers an edge).

You can argue if that is the correct approach or not, but it is Apple's DNA now - and all the issues in the pro segment stem from it. Not enough hardware to be sold, why bother, etc.

pinaceae··on How Google Could Collapse
Not arguing about Google, but careful with using revenue growth as a leading indicator.

RIM/Blackberry's best years in numbers happened AFTER the iPhone launched.

Life comes at you fast.

pinaceae··on Tech companies should create ‘farm teams’ to close the talent deficit
It is.

Functional QA is the very first user of a new feature.

Automation handles the rest of the work.

But not having a human go through the software as it is intended is a mistake.

pinaceae··on Tech companies should create ‘farm teams’ to close the talent deficit
We can't even get enough qualified resumes. Pay doesn't even come into play. And my associate engineers make more dough than my parents ever did.

You should try hiring once, before dropping such simplistic statements.

The upcoming H1B squeeze won't help. White CS grads do. not. want. to work in boring tech such as QA, etc. Remove Eastern Europeans and Asians and we're back to outsourcing whole departments to their home countries.

That's reality.

The US is utterly failing in creating enough homegrown talent, university education is far too expensive, everything below is useless as there is no good education available below.

Just a little bit more and some other country/region will take that whole business, that's how the economy works. Unlimited salaries never happens.

pinaceae··on Why Twitter Is Failing to Grow
Twitter is a global chatroom for "journalists" and others interested in any kind of global/regional/local event.

It is focused on moments, topics and the "discussions" around them. The UI limits discussions, by design or accidental design. But it works, just hammers everything down.

You want to witness news as they are being digested by the media and turned into "real news"? Use Twitter.

There are only so many news junkies, but for those, nothing beats Twitter.

It is the breaking news ticker bar on the bottom of the TV, amplified - plus the ability to yell at it.

I love it, and I hate it.

pinaceae··on How the Airlines Became Cartels
Absolutely - but the lack of societal memory and cohesion wiped out all the progress.

Ultimately there is a lack of a unified societal contract, ironic in a country so focused on its constitution. What is the purpose of government, rules and society?

A lot of the issues in the US stem from this lack of common ground. And I believe, at the root is poor education and a sense of me vs. the newly arrived. A constant struggle to keep your spoils and not wanting to share with new people who haven't contributed yet.

The US is not a coherent country and society (yet). Still confused as to its purpose.

And yes, Trump is a great symptom of this.

The UK has this personality crisis right now, the empire is gone and a lot of newcomers have shaken up society. Brexit is a similar outcome. It needs to find its core, but as a conglomerate it is hard. Common traditions should help - but when the Queen dies, it will shake them up even more.

pinaceae··on RIP Turkey, 1921 – 2017
Austria just elected a green party candidate as their president.

He would rank so left on the US spectrum of politics, Bernie Sanders would call him "a fucking commie".

Just sayin'.

pinaceae··on How the Airlines Became Cartels
As with a lot of other things, the US is simply a child.

A child slowly learning what it is to be a country, a government, a society.

You can see it in many areas, especially in ones other, more mature countries and regions, hold as vital to the public good.

Health Care. Transportation. Communication. Environment. etc.

Just look at how the EU governs passenger rights. None of the utter SHIT that is ok in the US would fly.

Same with data privacy - look at the upcoming GDPR law and compare to what ISPs can do in the US. And look at the stick they attached to it - a fine of 4% of total, global revenue. Boy I hope Facebook and Google have their checkbooks ready.

The citizen comes first, never a corporation.

You can't skip a couple hundred or even a thousand years of development though. A society needs to learn its lessons, takes ages. That the US is fueled by immigrants from less developed nations does not make it easier, those lessons need to be re-learned all the time. Societal memory does not exist as it does in say, Germany.

pinaceae··on Ultima VI
Shamino. Shimano is cycyling gear.

Iolo. Lord British. The Avatar. The Guardian.

U6, U7/1, U7/2 and UW2 were glorious worlds.

pinaceae··on When is it OK to shoot a child soldier?
That is easy to be trite and say that in the abstract, sitting at your computer.

Right back at'ya.

And a 2 year old child soldier? the hell man, running out of strawman arguments?

pinaceae··on When is it OK to shoot a child soldier?
When he/she is about to murder your loved ones with a machete.
pinaceae··on New York Has a Great Subway, If You’re Not in a Wheelchair
Vienna retro-fitted every subway station with wheelchair and stroller compatible elevators.

Don't discount the latter, so much easier for parents to use the subway that way.

It totally can be done. The US carved off a slice of every sidewalk to allow for ramps for wheelchairs, nationwide.

pinaceae··on I reverse-engineered a $500M Artificial Intelligence company in one week
Baity title for maximum effect, but the article itself is not so bad. Content marketing, but ok.
pinaceae··on 2038: Only 21 years away
yes - but this means there is more than a simple OS operating in those devices.

and just like any other IoT, using generic chips and stacks is cheaper.

run QNX or Linux on it and walk away.

there are DYI insulin pump monitors out there already that use Linux on RaspberryPi - see here: https://openaps.org/

pinaceae··on Carlsbad, CA to photograph every car entering city
they have 100% success rate with my vehicles, one of them a motorcycle with very dirty plates.
pinaceae··on Carlsbad, CA to photograph every car entering city
they photoscan your license plate regardless.

i have one fastrak box and 4 vehicles. just registered all of them online, now i no longer need the box. this way they're also catching toll offenders.

golden gate bridge is fully automated now, scans every vehicle, no opt out lane.

pinaceae··on Carlsbad, CA to photograph every car entering city
Fastrak already does this, using any toll crossing or paid express lane triggers it. Good luck entering SF from Marin without getting scanned.
pinaceae··on 2038: Only 21 years away
you might be underestimating modern med devices which even have wireless access (beats a port or invasive surgery to read a log).
