piggybox··on Ask HN: How to speak like a leader, not like an engineer?
As someone who stepped up from an engineer to a leader, I've been struggling with this talking-in-2-roles problem. Thank you very much for bringing this up.
piggybox··on YC China and Qi Lu
As good as Google is, I'm glad we have alternatives to choose from. Bing is actually pretty good in China where Google is not available.
piggybox··on Turi Create simplifies the development of custom machine learning models
If they ever add support for AMD GPU in this ML lib, I will seriously consider buying the next-gen Mac Pro.
piggybox··on Apple is close to acquiring Shazam, sources say
I'm impressed
piggybox··on Designing Data-Intensive Applications
Very interesting. What do you think about CockroachDB (https://github.com/cockroachdb/cockroach)? Is that serious enough to the challenge, from outside Google?
piggybox··on iMac Pro
not gonna work well without Nvidia card(s!)
piggybox··on Deeplearning.ai: Announcing New Deep Learning Courses on Coursera
I disagree as well. I took the ML course a long time ago and now I can't remember anything about Octave but still remember those key ideas and algorithms taught in the course. That's the point.
piggybox··on Firefox marketshare revisited
My experience exactly. Every time people told me it's getting better I downloaded and just felt differently...to the point I'm too tired to try it anymore.

LOL

Stitch Fix also does that, at least in the data science team.
piggybox··on Things to know before using AWS’s Elasticsearch Service
I don't use data pipeline anymore, but 2 years ago when I was using it in my previous company there were a few moments that drove me nuts. I vaguely remember one day AWS upgraded data pipeline to a newer version and broke hundreds of our pipelines that write data to Redshift. We contacted AWS and they rolled that update back...
piggybox··on Lessons Learned from Shenzhen I/O
Same here. I'm gonna lose a few days of sleep thanks to the author.
piggybox··on Deck.gl: Large-Scale WebGL-Powered Data Visualization
Examples crashed the WebGL component in Chrome 54...
piggybox··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
I thank Coursera for everything they've done to me. It's totally life changing. Without it I wouldn't be at where I am, wouldn't have chance to learn these great courses from top universities and as a result, got a dream job.

I don't mind paying a small fee (still much cheaper than going to any other school) seriously. I understand that's not the topic people are arguing about here, but anyway.

piggybox··on Ask HN: What's your favorite online course?
I did that and it was super fun
piggybox··on Flutter – Cross-platform mobile framework from Google
Sad but true
piggybox··on Pivotal Greenplum Database has been open sourced
would like to see some benchmark vs Redshift, though the latter is a blackbox
piggybox··on Things Microsoft Still Does Well
The very first things came into my mind when I saw the title were MS ergonomic mouse and keyboard, then xbox the second.
piggybox··on Will Scala ever be enterprise-ready?
That tool is good but the problem of Python 2 -> 3 wasn't just syntax incompatibility, but API changes that made many libraries hard to migrate until recent.
piggybox··on Mac Pro
Although I'm amazed at the thermal core design, it still looks like a litter bin somehow.
piggybox··on 'The chair is out to kill us'. Studies point to the health risks of sitting
I'm glad I replaced my comfortable Herman Miller chair with a very cheap ball chair which encourages active sitting
piggybox··on The future of R - pessimistic thoughts by R founder Ross Ihaka
A lot of people blame Lisp for too many brackets, but I generally feel they are not the issue after reading Lisp for a while. What may make it scientist-unfriendly is to write math formulas in infix grammar.
piggybox··on Ask HN: Who's using Clojure, and to do what?
R does have quite a bit of financial libraries, yet I don't remember R has any good support on parallel computing, hmm?
