pier25··on Mark Zuckerberg's biggest legal nightmare yet could cost Meta $1.4T
Social media is the new tobacco
pier25··on Price per 1M tokens is meaningless
Spend 5 minutes on the marketing pages of any AI company and it's obvious they're not selling electricity, fuel, or even raw compute.
pier25··on Price per 1M tokens is meaningless
On top of that isn't it strange that if the LLM makes a mistake you're still charged for those tokens?

They're selling "intelligence", automation, etc but if the service doesn't work as expected the user has to pay for that.

pier25··on Big Tech Has Suddenly Flipped on the AI Jobs Wipeout Scenario
The only thing that matters is the economy of it all.

Open AI et al are hemorrhaging absurd amounts of money. It's not clear whether there will ever be a good balance between cost, value, and price.

Lots of companies are already questioning the value they get from LLMs at current prices which are obviously not enough to generate profits.

pier25··on What ORMs have taught me: just learn SQL (2014)
I was against ORMs until I used EF Core in .NET which I really loved. A good ORM is amazing for productivity and when needed you can always write raw SQL.

I don't use .NET anymore but lately I've been happy with Drizzle for TS. It's very performant and expressive. After years it seems that they're finally going to release v1.0 soon.

Personally I would never go back to writing all my queries with SQL, manually mapping the results, etc.

pier25··on Spain Orders Blacklist of Palantir from Public and Private Companies
In the CPI Spain is not that far off from countries like France, Italy or the US and better than the global average.

I'm currently living in Mexico and here corruption is a much more serious issue.

pier25··on Vite+ Beta
I was hoping for something more flexible. I suppose the whole point of Prettier is that it's not flexible but I find 90% of the times the code is actually uglier when using it.
pier25··on Vite+ Beta
> It's not as if it is dramatically better now than it was in version 3

Adding stuff for SSR was a major improvement.

pier25··on Vite+ Beta
I think they should find a better name for this project. I find it very confusing since it's not really a better Vite.

At the time Void Zero was probably looking to monetize the Vite brand but now that they've been acquired by Cloudflare they don't need to do that anymore.

pier25··on Vite+ Beta
Rolldown is used in Vite (non plus) though.
pier25··on Vite+ Beta
I was excited about Oxfmt until I tried it and found that it's mostly intended to be a Prettier replacement. Ugh.
pier25··on Meta Posed as Teens to Prompt Rival Chatbots About Suicide, Sex, and Drugs
On products from their competitors?
pier25··on Tidal AI Policy
Suno et al don't really have a incentive to hide the fact that their tracks are generated using AI. Quite the contrary, the only way they won't get sued to death by UMG and the other big labels is to disclose AI generated tracks.
pier25··on Tokenmaxxing is dead, long live tokenmaxxing
One thing is to invest R&D money with a strategy and another to force people to burn as much money as possible to see what happens.
pier25··on Tidal AI Policy
it won't be monetized so there's zero incentive to upload AI slop to Tidal
pier25··on Tidal AI Policy
Good now add a setting to hide all AI content.
pier25··on Tokenmaxxing is dead, long live tokenmaxxing
It seems really absurd that anyone would encourage or even force employees to burn more money to see if maybe something works.
pier25··on OpenAI leans toward waiting until next year for IPO
They should have done it a year or two ago when the hype was strong.

Today everyone knows there's no agi coming up and it will be a very long time until they generate any profits, if ever.

pier25··on Deno 2.9
> Node compatibility was a distraction for the product

I've gone back and forth on this point over the years.

Yeah, Node compat has probably affected the rest of the product. I imagine at some point they (or their investors) freaked out because adoption wasn't happening. And the reality is it really doesn't matter if your product is better when nobody is using it.

In retrospect I think it would have been a better decision to target Node compat from the start like Bun did. An impossible option at the time given Deno started trying to make something different from Node.

Or maybe the problem was simply they couldn't afford low adoption after having investors on board.

pier25··on Show HN: Nub – A Bun-like all-in-one toolkit for Node.js
There's a difference between running your app on a vibe coded runtime or just local DX tools though.
pier25··on Show HN: Nub – A Bun-like all-in-one toolkit for Node.js
Very cool idea which makes a lot of sense. Bun provides more (eg db drivers) but the DX is certainly a big part of its appeal.

For reference, the main author of Nub is Colin McDonnell who created Zod and even worked at Bun at some point.

pier25··on DHL Set to Transport Goods on New Wind-Powered Cargo Ships
It's difficult to see how huge these are from the photo in the wsj article.

pier25··on DHL Set to Transport Goods on New Wind-Powered Cargo Ships
The important metric should be emissions per metric ton though, including construction of the ships.
pier25··on Deno Desktop
So how much does a hello world weight?
pier25··on Deno Desktop
There’s no running TS. Everyone executes JS.

Also TS itself is going towards stripped types. There’s this proposal which might land on browsers some day:

https://tc39.es/proposal-type-annotations/

And in preparation you can use this setting on your tsconfig:

https://www.typescriptlang.org/tsconfig/#erasableSyntaxOnly

pier25··on Bun has an open PR adding shared-memory threads to JavaScriptCore
It's not about the code or the use of AI. It's about the governance of the Bun project.

Nobody knows if the Rust AI rewrite was a good decision from a technical pov. We do know it was a unilateral and drastic decision taken behind closed doors and imposed onto all Bun users.

There was a poll on r/bun where only about 30% of users said they were going to use the Rust port.

https://www.reddit.com/r/bun/comments/1u3j4d7/are_you_going_...

Even worse, users on the Zig version have been pretty much abandoned. Any future bug fixes, security patches, etc will only be released in the Rust version.

pier25··on Claude: Elevated errors across many models
there's a whole odyssey with their CLI flickering...
pier25··on Fox to buy Roku
I doubt it. That SOC is still overkill for video (which I believe powered the Nintendo Switch 1). I think the big issue is really a combination of the Nvidia software and just terrible Android TV.
