pier25··on It's Happening – Europe Is Building an Impossible Fusion Reactor [video]
Amazing stuff. Hopefully it will work.
pier25··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
The future will be much worse. Some effects take years or decades to manifest and we wont see them during a relatively short event like El Niño.

Eg: the severe disruption of the jet stream or the collapse of the AMOC.

Plus all the long term feedbacks like methane etc.

pier25··on Bluesky's active user base is shrinking as its focus expands beyond the app
I’m probably in the minority but 99% of my bsky usage is on web desktop.

> I'm 36 now and feel like my spatial reasoning is declining in a strange severe way.

How do you know this is caused by gaming?

pier25··on Taxi drivers rarely die of Alzheimer's
Does gaming also use similar spatial skills?

pier25··on I'll be stepping back from leading product for X
> always confused when people are complaining about it these days

The biggest complaint I've heard is about the owner and how he's using X as a megaphone.

pier25··on I'll be stepping back from leading product for X
sounds like the "what have the Romans done for us?" bit
pier25··on Increasing the lifespan of a bulb makes it worse in every other way
Some of the first LED bulbs we bought are still running after more than 10 years. I don't remember the brand but they were expensive at the time.
pier25··on The End of an Era
I've never heard about writers writing with an audience. A real one at least. Of course there's always an imaginary reader.

Performing and writing couldn't be any more different or attract different types of people.

pier25··on The End of an Era
For sure LLMs can write in perfect English (or any other language) and convey information.

But good writing is more than just conveying information. To me it's about connecting to a voice. This is a rare quality and AFAIK I have never experienced this with AI generated text or even with 99% of human written text for that matter.

pier25··on The End of an Era
Writing has always been a solitary act.
pier25··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)
Yeah. If anyone doubts this go listen to some gamelan music and see if they can make any sense of it (harmonically speaking).

pier25··on "Google and Reddit do not own the Internet," web scraper says after court win
Obviously search results can't be copyrighted but it's a completely different situation for Reddit, no?
pier25··on Harmony Explained: Progress Towards a Scientific Theory of Music (2012)
"Worse" is definitely a subjective appreciation influenced by culture and personal taste.
pier25··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
Yes. Something like 45% of global emissions come from electricity generation.
pier25··on The Strongest El Niño Ever
Indeed.

We needed to reach zero emissions 20 years ago and today we should have strong negative emissions.

At this rate I don't think humanity will reach zero emissions before 2050. It's going to take a couple of very bad years for humanity to take this seriously.

pier25··on Google Discloses $94.1B in SpaceX Stock, Marking 6% Stake
Excluding all the capex from AI this last quarter has been one of their best.
pier25··on Firefox Containers Preview
Very cool. This should be a default feature in all browsers.
pier25··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
> It was simpler, better, more stable, _and_ had better UX.

It had less features too.

Now, I do agree doing more doesn't mean that something is necessarily better... but I think the UX difficulty increases exponentially as more features are added.

pier25··on Google’s ATLAS is a look at how people are using AI
Things aren't going great if Google is investing into... whatever this is.

pier25··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
It is an indisputable fact that Anthropic made money on models trained on those pirated books.
pier25··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
> This is a settlement that the authors and Anthropic agreed upon.

The authors or the publishers?

I have a hard time believing they agreed with the millions of authors they pirated.

pier25··on Judge approves $1.5B Anthropic settlement for pirated books used to train Claude
This is not even than a slap on the wrist. Publishers who negotiated this really fucked up writers.

According to US federal law, pirating a single copyrighted work and gaining commercial advantage of it (which Anthropic 100% did) represents five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. But it gets worse:

"Penalties for a copyright infringement conviction may increase if the defendant has previous similar convictions, made more than 10 copies of copyrighted works, committed copyright infringement during a period longer than 180 days, or infringed copyrighted material worth more than $2,500."

pier25··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
why would anybody invest all that time to understand and maintain a mess (according to the creator of zig) of 500k lines of zig code?
pier25··on LG monitors silently install software through Windows Update without consent
Still not 100% there but yeah in 5-10 years it wouldn't surprise me if Linux becomes the dominant desktop gaming platform.
pier25··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
You mean except the bugs in the zig version and any future CVEs?
pier25··on Claude Code uses Bun written in Rust now
This is the exact reason I stopped using Bun for new projects.

Terrible project governance.

TS 7 is a good example of what a responsible team that cares about their users should have done.
