No complete record - no case..
picadores··on Forensics Gone Wrong: When DNA Snares the Innocent (2016)
Full Process Surveilance is needed to make evidence admissable. If it aint filmed the whole way, it aint valid.
picadores··on Boeing whistleblower: MAX 9 production line has "enormous volume of defects"
Shoutout to a anonymous Boeing engineer sitting in some for a gruesome permanent crisis-meetings, where mostly pr- and mbas talk about what has to be done, but not what has to change, especially not about how engineering and QA should have a blocking-veto right for any decision and the ones actually talking about plans to change.
picadores··on What happens when an astronaut in orbit says he's not coming back?
NASA seems to have a long standing tradition of sweeping problems under the rug. No skylab mutiny, no depressed payload specialists, all fine here gentleman, nothing to see here.

I always wondered why this is written that way. To protect the organisation? But the human part of us all is part of that organization, to disacknowledge that is literally inhumane. Because they are funded by taxpayer dollars and should screen better? Companies get funded by tax-payer bailouts and government projects all the time, waste them on not carefully selected conmen all the time.

So why is it not okay to write about this? Is this a remnant of the "epic hero" with a rocket from the early scifi days?

picadores··on Mourning Google
Turpor after great feasts and the ability to either winter and scurry under the snow - or move migrate away to greener pastures is what saved the day.
picadores··on Ask HN: 9-yo son wants to build a game, I'm lost. What can I do?
The kid with the burned out stare in the first video hits so hard.
picadores··on Ask HN: 9-yo son wants to build a game, I'm lost. What can I do?
well, two things. Version Control and something working but similar.

Means, you teach them how to get back to the working start state. Then you check out the repo: https://github.com/topics/2d-platformer-game

And you help him to modify it. Add and expand it. Modding is the way to get into gamedev, without the demotivating problem of having nothign to play and long workhours without reward at the start.

picadores··on The Mating Psychology of Incels – The Journal of Sex Research
Well, they are the remnants of a society, were you could still trade in your works worth for "love" or at least a "dont break the chain" genetic future in the shape of a "family". And now this contract is up, they want to burn the whole thing down.
picadores··on New nuclear deflection simulations advance planetary defense against asteroids
He who resides above us in station, beyond the gravity well, we shall hail a god. Hail Armstrong, mighty wielder of tungsten rod and rock! We praise you and tremble in thy shadow every 90 minutes.
picadores··on New nuclear deflection simulations advance planetary defense against asteroids
How high are the chances of the asteroid disintegrating? As in frozzen snowball with peebles?
picadores··on New nuclear deflection simulations advance planetary defense against asteroids
Every tumble has a "slow" pole, where the outgasing would form a vector, nearly almost away from earth.

Also at least we cant have a ice-ball earth due to impact-winter.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snowball_Earth

picadores··on Why do programmers need private offices with doors?
The older i get the more i think, the project management paragdigm should be one of protecting the productive core at all costs from external disruptions.

This includes deriving the actual wanted goals early in the project, planning properly and the violently shield the engineers by keeping external factors like the management microcosm, stakeholders and non-developers busy with busywork, placated with blatant lies and overall away from doing damage. Regarding the engineer team organiziation - they will work something out.

They don't need that car-production-belt whistle and whip.

picadores··on 3D Printer Auto Bed Leveling Mesh Visualizer
How does the printer compensate for precision loss do to movement? In industrial robotics, there is the concept of measuring the inprecissions in the machinery at any given point (direct measurement) and compensate that via variables in the robotic matrice. Is there something similar for printers?
picadores··on 3D Printer Auto Bed Leveling Mesh Visualizer
So that is two layers of filler to create a perfect bed to print on?
picadores··on Why Amazon Has No Profits (2014)
So did the investors recover there investments, or did ali baba devalue them by copying to fast? Is venture capital just stupid money paving the way for those who come after it and dont' have to pay the learning dues? In a world where all that remains viable is to become a game-theory parasite waiting on a tree-branch, betting on thrust-busting never to resume, what happens to the innovator?
picadores··on Chaos Communication Congress tickets still available
At new years eve though?
picadores··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
Realpoliticans are always playing for the autoritarian team, as it flattens the playing field, giving up the moral high ground, one of the reasons russian bots desperatly push it as the "default" mindset. Got to turn everyone a psychopathic maniac out for themselves, to justify being one.
picadores··on Unity Software with a 'company reset' walks away from film VFX and the Wētā Deal

picadores··on Google Drive misplaces months' worth of customer data
Cant have a pro in motion without a promotion point for it.. and it looks so good in the presentations. Useability? Function? Screw it.. it must look good in adds. Make all the things screenshot useable only.
picadores··on German Autobahn speed limit would bring €1bn in benefits
And there is already a physical speed limit in many areas. If the autobahn has no speed limit, but the right most lane is a basically "truck only lane" at 80- 100 mph, and its only two lanes, all vehicles pool to that one lane, and on that one lane, the slowest sets the speed.

Which is often lorries, slow vehicles etc. Thus even though you could drive the speed of sound in theory, in reality you can not, unless its very late at night. This is mostly a law that is pushed by carbon groups, to rile up car-centric society against crazy "green" politicians.

Similar things can be seen with the refugee policies. Some Putin puppet pumps a refugeestream into the heart of europe, so that another putinpuppet can win elections. Thats how - if you have no good arguments, you win elections. By manipulating the narrative and forcing your oppossition into retarded splits between reality and principles.

picadores··on CEO: Europe needs tech entrepreneurs 'whose project is not to sell' to US[video]
Private sector works as soon as there is demand, but the problem is that its not able to traverse large "deserts" towards new technologies. The state is better at long range exploration of not "colonizeable" capabilities pushing roots and tendrils over the deserts and mountains into new valleys.
picadores··on CEO: Europe needs tech entrepreneurs 'whose project is not to sell' to US[video]
DARPA - and europe just does not do those challenges..
picadores··on CEO: Europe needs tech entrepreneurs 'whose project is not to sell' to US[video]
Its just a centralization thing. All things go towards the capital of the empire. It was madrid, paris, then london - for now it is the bay area?

Europe needs to stop clinging to the milk cows of the past. The car industry is a dieing endavour, highly disruptable due to dependence on fossil fuels.

Ironically, in my opinion, eastern europe is setup much better for software. Im regularly blown away what the chech republic, poland and the baltic tigers do - compared to west europe.

picadores··on We have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return to OpenAI as CEO
Totally agree, GPT should be trained to spout adds and develop dark pattern behaviour.
picadores··on How Stone Walls Became a Signature Landform of New England
? Eh, stone walls are a byproduct of removing stones from fields. The humus part sets, new stones disappear, the game goes on and on. Fields do only become stonefree, if you add earth from some external source on top. Source: My youth on my dads farm.

Additional annoying: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_consolidation Because not all those fields were properly consolidated (the internal walls moved to the outside, you get stripes in the new larger field, were there are stones again.

picadores··on A brain injury removed my ability to perceive time
Could a smart-watch based interrupt and reminder of "basic overview task" work as a time-keeping prosthesis?
picadores··on A brain injury removed my ability to perceive time
I distinctly remember a HN post, were the father of the poster had the same problem. Meaning he would sometimes "crash" and just stand there, forgetting about the world everything - often for hours if nobody "interrupted".
picadores··on Gen Z wants to retire early. They're off to a good start
Translated: They did not experience a stock-market crash yet and the societal memory of risky behaviour resulting in a stock market crash fades.
