pi-victor··on Suse is once again an independent company
openSUSE is a really good and modern linux distro, people complaining about here probably haven't used it in a long while. Whilst i worked in A&T we handled a few thousand+ servers running SLES 11 SP2 and it was solid.

I think they're biggest handicap is they're not from the US and while i worked there people acknowledge they have horrible marketing. Also being bought and sold a few times doesn't help, and with the HPE acquisition a few years back, a lot of employees (on HPE side) simply left.

The kubic project has developed the only viable alternative to CoreOS that's being phased out. Unfortunately where MicroOS falls short is SUSE's stubbornness for using BtrFS, which causes a lot of headaches and has been dropped from all major distros at this point. People in the kubic project have also been contributors to kubernetes, kubeadm, OCI, (they even contributed a lot of code to podman, from Red Hat) and they've been a significant driving force for rootless containers https://rootlesscontaine.rs/. It's weird they're not more often in the limelight with all the hard work they do, but maybe they'll take this opportunity to fix their marketing and steer into a better direction :).

pi-victor··on Deep learning may need a new programming language
i always thought Haskell would be amazing for this task.

but python is really popular and easy to grasp. you'll end up writing a new programming language and people would still use python in the end.

pi-victor··on Ask HN: Is it just me or did Google search recently get a lot worse?
I use DDG but when i wanted better results i used google. It gets harder to differentiate, they both miss the point.

Granted search engines are no psychics, you also need to better phrase your searches sometimes.

I remember Google used to return way more accurate results a few years ago. I guess privacy regulations, increasing demand for higher ad revenue have made it a lot worse than it used to be.

pi-victor··on Space Colony Art from the 1970s
You mean retro Elisyum maybe :)

Also, how did we get from this cool stuff to zombie apocalypse, dystopian society and barren wastelands in our sci-fi?

pi-victor··on Practical Linux Hardening Guide
incomplete and yet has 1600 stars now. good job. also it's top on HN.
pi-victor··on Why I’m Giving $1.8B for College Financial Aid
was about to same the exact same thing. however, as long as this helps, in the broader sense, i hope he buys all the popularity he can get :)
pi-victor··on Linux on Dex
woha, ubuntu edge flashback! https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ubuntu-edge#/
pi-victor··on Your GitHub Alternative
my bad - was referencing gitlab cloud. I've maintained a private gitlab instance for my team some 3-4 years ago that was dockerized, it went quite ok, despite docker being rather new at that point.
pi-victor··on Your GitHub Alternative
Tried both gitlab and bitbucket as alternatives. Bibucket server is a-b-y-s-m-al. We use it at work and the UX is so clunky and backwards and for a solution that is intended for enterprise use, most of the logic in the UI/UX seems to not be directed towards a multi-user environment at all. Bitbucket cloud is more or less the same experience.

Gitlab is known to be unstable and i'll give it to them, the UI improved a bit lately, it's still pretty bad and i wouldn't say it's very much oriented towards multi user collaboration. I think the main advantage of GitHub is that it was somewhat thought of as an open source hub/portal. Where you have easy access to other projects you wouldn't find without much of a hassle. They would just surface through the help of ratings (github stars).

pi-victor··on What is wrong with Microsoft buying GitHub
It's not like GitHub was the perfect open source place anyway. The platform itself is not open source in any way and it has been plagued by a few scandals.

'i've deleted my account' seems very pedantic and most of the arguments brought up are rather old. However, i do agree on the skype thing - man it got bad after MS bought it.

Don't think any company that can afford to buy another company for well above 1.5 billion (i understand the worth of GitHub in 2016 was around 2 billion) has a pristine past.
