phyllostachys··on Ask HN: What does an electrical engineer actually do at work?
He became something of a huge KiCad evangelist there a while back. I've heard that this list and Contextual Electronics are pretty good. I think he still works for parts.io too.
phyllostachys··on Friends are as genetically similar as fourth cousins
It is mentioned in some comments of comments further down but Wolfram Alpha has some great family tree generation.

phyllostachys··on F# Not just for finance
I think in this case, referential transparency means the same thing. That is, produce the same output given the same input, every time.
phyllostachys··on Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'
In western Pennsylvania, where I'm from, people definitely do go to Sheetz just for food.
phyllostachys··on What do you mean ‘we need more time’? Project schedule estimation in software
Ugh. I was on a project like this. I figured that it was mostly just that specific customer...
phyllostachys··on The Brain Is Hardwired to Snap
> This gender =/= sex is a recent concept invented by mankind.

I thought it was fairly recent concept too until I learned this tidbit in a Anthropology survey course:

phyllostachys··on Fourier Visualizations
I see some people here mentioning Fourier Transforms. I'm under the impression that this only really visualizes Fourier series approximation and has nothing to do with Fourier Transforms, right?
phyllostachys··on Why programming is a good medium for expressing poorly understood ideas (1967)
The Palmer method, that is what I learned back in the mid-nineties in elementary school. I didn't know it had a proper name other than 'cursive writing'. Neat!

Edit: Err wait, maybe not. It looks the same but so does the Zaner-Bloser form. Looking at some more methods, apparently I don't understand how it all works.

phyllostachys··on T-Shirts Unravelled
This is how military utility uniforms are sized: Small, Medium, Large and Short, Regular, Tall. I'm surprised that idea hasn't spread into mainstream sizing.
phyllostachys··on T-Shirts Unravelled
If you do it right, you can get a nice crack sound. I've found that I can usually get at one from a freshly washed item of clothing (and towels) and it only cracks once per fresh wash. I don't understand the mechanism that causes it but find it satisfying for some reason.
phyllostachys··on Hand powered drilling tools and machines (2010)
You need to try one of these[1]. I finally bought one and everyone who has used it loves it, so far. I suppose it isn't really the best for putting in screws but it works wonders on any sort of drilling (bit or spade).

phyllostachys··on Cord drill and Pump drill [video]
That was also my favorite part of that video. How he cuts all of his videos is very well done. And how he doesn't say anything and only demonstrates, it's very effective.
phyllostachys··on Announcing Rust 1.6
I think the GP was but I read the parent comment as just a stab at comparing and contrasting C++ and Rust. I found it useful and interesting in that aspect.
phyllostachys··on Microchip Technology to Buy Atmel for Nearly $3.6B
In a few meet and greets, the Atmel app engineers mentioned that they always steer people to ARM parts unless they have a requirement that absolutely doesn't fit it, then they push AVR32 parts (and seemingly hesitantly).
phyllostachys··on Microchip to Acquire Atmel for $3.56B
RIP Atmel Studios...

I can only imagine how this is going to affect choosing a microcontroller in the future. When I was in school, PIC vs AVR was often debated. I also really liked the selection of ARM Cortex-M parts that Atmel offered. I can only hope that the good parts of Atmel remain into the future.

phyllostachys··on Alan Rickman, Harry Potter and Die Hard Actor, Dies Aged 69
This reminds me of how I learned recently how much Harrison Ford disliked Han Solo as a character. :-/
phyllostachys··on The Dying Art of Mental Math Tricks
Interesting. When I finally went to college after leaving high school, my handwriting started evolving into a joined style. I just figured that I was writing lazily. I suppose it is the path of least resistance as there aren't stops between letters but there isn't anything extra like there is in cursive.
phyllostachys··on Ford says it conducted successful tests of driverless cars in snowy conditions
I suppose I was thinking more about the snow storms up near Lake Erie, which is only about 2 hours from Pittsburgh. Living in Erie, there was a few storms that led to I-90 having whiteout conditions and single lane traffic. Winters in Pittsburgh are fairly mild in comparison.

Having never lived near the Rockies, I don't know how it compares. They probably are worse though.

phyllostachys··on Two Weeks of Rust
I haven't really been keeping tabs on it but I've heard from a former coworker that cross-compiling for ARM Cortex-M parts is fairly easy too.
phyllostachys··on Ford says it conducted successful tests of driverless cars in snowy conditions
Uber's Advanced Technology Center [] is in Pittsburgh. Having grew up about 1.5 hours north of there, that is a good area to test snowy conditions.

phyllostachys··on Don't Assume It's Difficult Until It Is
For about the last year that I was in the military, I started using a shaving brush and safety razor. It was the best, though I usually had to shave twice (down then up) to get the closeness required of a military shave. Reading this and thinking back, perhaps I should have tried a straight razor. I never shave anymore so perhaps it could be something new to try.
phyllostachys··on Why I Write Games in C
Agreed. Now that I'm not doing things where I have to build and then flash memory, my workflow seems to fast!
phyllostachys··on Why I Write Games in C
Fixed. :)
phyllostachys··on [dead]
> As Warren Buffet said (paraphrased), an entrepreneur isn't going to stop trying to get rich because of a 10 or 20% hike in marginal or capital gains taxes.

I think that quote is here:

phyllostachys··on Peter Naur has died
Rail[1] is a programming language, but that is orthogonal to your point.

phyllostachys··on The Price We Pay for Sitting Too Much
Or, just search for article title and go to it via Google. It seems to work every time. Learned that via Chris Gammell from the Amp Hour[].

phyllostachys··on Flexible working can make you ill, experts say
I've also thought about that a lot. I had a friend at a previous employer who considered starting a food truck business instead of doing software development.
phyllostachys··on The Typical American Lives Only 18 Miles from Mom
I would have guessed Las Vegas.
phyllostachys··on 1% the Code (2001)
Hmmm. This comment made me realize that I use parens and commas too much in my sentences, in emails, chats, etc. Now for how to fix that...
phyllostachys··on Netflix socks detect when you've dozed off and pause your TV show
Yes, this. I turned off the auto-play-next feature but there is no way to avoid the shrink-credits thing. :-/

I never noticed it skipping the opening credits though.
