How about huge helium balloons attached to a hose that lets a compressor suck the helium back down to ground level. The hose/tether would be on a spool attached to a generator. You could even do this from the ocean floor using regular surface air.
Devils advocate here, but what if facebook had an Opt-In, where users can allow the features they've entered to limit the ads shown to them? What if I only want ads (from food to housing) in Spanish or Chinese? Can my preference as an individual override having to see ads that I don't want to see?
It was one of many DARPA projects to see what can be done with the table scraps of open/unclassified data available. The ship beaconing data was in that category. As was uber sample data, backpage data, darkweb ecommerce, blockchain ledgers. We looked at ALL kinds of data, and tried fusing where we could. One target was human trafficking. https://www.google.com/search?q=memex+human+trafficking
Yes, my guess is either public IP or GPS colocation from phone apps, possibly even using the wifi AP name if you both had phones connected. If civilian GPS is good to a few meters, it's easy to look up who lives in that radius.
Thanks for that tidbit. It would be nice to be grandfathered in, I can see it being a huge PITA to ask millions of people for proof--which probably gives them even more sensitive data like a photo of an ID. I assume your privacy laws travel with you, so if you travel to/login from the US your privacy rights stay the same?
For a while I had enabled Messenger to handle texts on my phone, because it kept nagging me to do so, and also the one built in to the phone was terrible. So that means for a time they saw all my github/gmail authenticator login codes, delivery notifications, etc. I'm sure that's all somewhere.
Seems reasonable. I can see the <insert perpetually outraged millennial news site> headline now: "An open letter to Facebook: How dare you recommended I be friends with my rapist"
Can we just change our info to say we're residing in some protected part of Europe? I've already gone in and falsified all of the good stuff, it wouldn't hurt to 'move' again if it means they have to apply an extra layer of privacy/right to forget.
My old boss loved to play big brother on us with LinkedIn. She'd get notified when we were updating our stuff, and I think she could see when we were messaging with recruiters/etc. I'm not entirely sure what the limits were with her upgraded account, but she wasn't good at hiding that she knew when her employees were looking for new jobs.
Exactly. I downloaded mine and there were entire chat histories missing, and some of the ones I explored were incomplete. I could see more data in the actual browser chat interface than what was in the download. It didn't include posts I made on other people pages, all the likes, shares, and the thousands of gifs I've sh!tposted. It also did not include data from the pages I manage/own.
We joke at the office about going to update our linkedin after terrible meetings. In fact the act of interacting with that site at all, either from updates or clicking emails, is probably a sign I'm looking for greener pastures.
NY Time article "The technique had been developed at Cambridge University’s Psychometrics Center. The center declined to work with Cambridge Analytica, but Aleksandr Kogan, a Russian-American psychology professor at the university, was willing.
Dr. Kogan built his own app and in June 2014 began harvesting data for Cambridge Analytica."
I'm not sure how Google qualifies as a private company, but I would like to play devils advocate. Tell me how I can refuse to bake a cake for someone because their personal views differ from mine. I dare you.
I came here looking for one too. All they offer is the CSV that powers a Neo4J graph, not a link to the 1.4TB of files (which is what I want to ingest)
I find these baiting titles tiresome, and I generally assume (even if it makes an ass out of me) that the author is splitting hairs or wants to grandstand on some inefficiency that most of us knew was there already. (I'm assuming if they had a real argument then it would have been in a descriptive title) With titles like these I'll go straight to the comments section before giving you any ad-revenue. This is HN, not Buzzfeed, and we deserve better than this.
From my experience observing its usage, it can refer to the willful beta-[noun] of any topic. They would call a person a 'cuck' for not taking a lead or position of power, just as easily as they call a country 'cucked' for not being nationalist enough. What remains is promotion of aggressive alpha-everything tendencies.
A municipality's zoning laws (variations of residential, agricultural and commercial/industrial) usually preclude what you can do on that land. The restrictions could be further defined by ordinances and covenants recorded with the municipality. If neighbors are able to complain about her land usage, I would assume she is not zoned agricultural. Anecdotal Sources: I own a dozen or so acres on agricultural zoned land, surrounded by houses, which I keep as a meadow.
On an emotional level, I am repulsed by bleeding hearts who start an article with pathos for sliced sneks and grasshoppers.
Lets say a movie previously would have shown 3 out of 5 stars. Where does that fit in with the binary thumbs up/down? I think they are just doing this because recently some actors movies are being attacked with 1 star ratings for being politically vocal.
We are stretching the (possibly false) analogy that Sam is an individual and that Marvin is also an individual. In reality, US Sam is an evolving (or revolving) representative electorate of a lands citizens, and 'Sam' controls the town, land, infrastructure and laws which support the marketplace, including the land, towns infrastructure and laws of the buyers. Sam doesn't need to be an associate, as he owns and operates the ecosystem that makes the market exist, except for the vendors and their tents.
Sam has stated for many years that Marvin is not allowed into his marketplace unless by written invitation. Marvin, being a citizen of his own town, can seek a marketplace in his own town, work with others to create one for himself like Sam did, or violate Sams borders knowing the consequences (as Sam has already told him what will happen). Just like standing at the bottom of the ocean will drown you, Sam has stated the consequences of violating his border. Sam detaining Marvin from Sams marketplace isn't violating Marvin's rights any more the sea denies your right to breath if you stand beneath it--Marvin is responsible for the risks he takes when the consequences are known. If Sam was Sam Jung Il, you may be shot dead. If it's uncle Sam, you can expect to be returned to your town.
