phryk··on The NSA can store communications of US citizens for up to 5 years, sans warrant
Why is everyone fretting about US citizens?

a) Thinking the NSA and other intelligence organizations would really make the distinction between US and non-US citizens, except in the scope that public opinion doesn't instantly crush them, doesn't seem like something they'd actually be likely to do.

b) 95% of the earths population are outside of the USA, Facebook alone has a user count higher than 3 times the total US population.

Really, the distinction is completely meaningless for this discussion. The only effect it has is alienating non-US citizens because it makes it seem like US citizens are only concerned about themselves.

I also think the focus on the US surveillance apparatus might not be the way to go either, things like the upcoming Indian surveillance system belong to the very same discussion.

phryk··on Antiprism
If the respective pirate parties put in enough of an effort, informing the public, organizing protests, petitioning local and EU authorities and so forth they might get some of this through. I still think that even then it would be unlikely…
phryk··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
Or the US teen who has been incarcerated for posting stupid rap lyrics on facebook:

http://cms.fightforthefuture.org/teenager/

Don't mind the petition though, last I heard was that his family was getting him out of jail with him not being indicted for anything. The authorities seemed to get a good amount of public pressure.

phryk··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
But the system is not the government. It is an emergent system created by the interaction of people. You don't have to accept the government as the primary authority that determines how you live your life. If enough people do that the culture changes and so will the "system".

I mean look at how inefficient governments are… Have you ever seen one make a solid economic plus? Those archaic structures are pretty much already crumbling.

I hope and think that the kind of shit these systems are doing right now are just the death throes of an obsolete institution desperately trying not to fade into irrelevance.

phryk··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
Actually I want a cooperative anarchy with localized institutions that are publicly controlled and from which anybody can opt out in some way.
phryk··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
No, they need a full range of policies if they are to get people to vote for them. Otherwise, people will say "I agree with you on X, but other policies are more important to me, so I won't be voting for you."

It just seems like an insane amount of brain cycles. Having just one clear goal would make it much easier for anyone to understand - in it's entirety - what the PP is standing for and also streamline resources towards that goal which would probably make it much more efficient in reaching said goal.

As for a complete political programme, can't they just have a team that puts all the decisions that are decided upon in political institutions where pirates are involved into a liquid feedback system where everyone can vote on it? That way the PP could already act as a small direct democracy.

phryk··on Dutch secret service 'also has access to information from PRISM'
Isn't the NY Post regularly 'speaking out' on behalf of homeopathy? I think they even had a post about how you should be an anti-vaccer if you're a parent or some bullshit like that…
phryk··on Python Flask NSA Backdoor
This term will be assimilated into my vocabulary.
phryk··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
At least in Germany a lot of people have become disillusioned by the (german) Pirate Party.

They seem to have degraded into a mix of ridiculous infighting and traditional political party stuff.

I'd much rather see them to push for just one topic: Getting direct democracy.

Right now they are just dispersing all the resources they have (in mind and matter) towards hundreds if not thousands of different topics and don't look like an efficient agent of change at all.

phryk··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
I'd say that culture is a much more powerful agent of change than traditional political work could ever be.

Politicians can act as scribes and put down into legislation a part of the cultural ethos, but they don't do much in the way of inspiring that ethos in the first place.

Practice what you preach, call bullshit by its' name.

phryk··on Why we can't go back to business as usual post-PRISM
Oh, you mean a bit like this?

"He found he was unable to print out a boarding pass […] when he approached ticket agents, they were blocked from producing a boarding pass for him without first calling a Secure Flight number at the Department of Homeland Security. […] ticket agents told him he was on a federal watchlist."

phryk··on Very Short Reply Expected
IMHO "Very Short Reply Expected" makes it sound like an answer longer than ~5 words is not welcome. I think it ought to be more inclusive so that in case there is more to say you still feel welcome to do so. Maybe something like SRW for "Short response welcome"…?
phryk··on Animating with physics instead of a timing function
By the looks of part one I don't think part two will use anything more complex than easing functions with a maximum movement speed…

Thanks for the paper, will read into it later todady as this is a very interesting topic. :)
phryk··on Is Organic Better? Ask a Fruit Fly
My thoughts exactly. But if there is no systematic or other error in her research and there are health-impacts for humans, too then we better get up to snuff and look for a solution to make our food healthier. Also even conventional farming is still somewhat inefficient. Vertical, largely automated farming could do much to lessen the footprint agriculture currently has on our landscapes and ecology.

phryk··on Stop externalising your life
Just for the record (pun totally intended): I fucking hate it when at a party/rave/concert everybody and their damned mother is standing around recording everything. Especially on the dancefloor. Especially especially if they then are all like "Dude, could you stop moving around, I'm trying to record this!1!!".
phryk··on Stop working so hard
I can second that. I've been working 30 hour weeks since last year and am more balanced and relaxed since then. Working less also helped me downsize my depression and (as of lately) procrastinatory tendencies. It also gives me more energy to work on my own projects and interests.

I really, really like the logo. Most companies today don't go through the effort of coming up with a good one (or with one at all), but yours does it's job very well. But yeah, the fade effect ought to go; Would be nice if it only happens the first time you go to the page (ie. when a session is initiated or the visitor comes from a referrer like google).
phryk··on Management tips for the Catholic church
I don't think we need a spiritual element in our life, rather a "knowledge", concept or other form of understanding of what our place in the world/universe is. But even with that I can't speak for everyone. What is nice about churches are rituals. My need for rituals is satisfied with raves, awesome atmosphere with a lot of friendly, tolerant people who are just enjoying themselves and the music with everyone.
phryk··on Management tips for the Catholic church
With child rape scandals I was merely referring to the wording "sex scandals", which seemed very euphemistic.

With the churches/religion dying I mean that atheists are the fastest growing 'camp' concerning religion. The catholic church might not die within the next 5 years, but I'm pretty sure will fade into non-existence. Every statement about the future is speculation of course.

phryk··on Management tips for the Catholic church
"auguring well for the future" Are you kidding me? Religion at large, especially the churches are dying… Also with "sex scandals" they mean [child] RAPE scandals, right?
