phreanix··on Update on Julie Horvath's Departure
I think the follow up will be more critical, especially the public explanation. That will have the potential to either strengthen GH's credibility or destroy it.
phreanix··on Apple is reportedly launching iOS in the Car with Ferrari, Mercedes, Volvo
Hmm. I have a PC, while I've generally used it less since I got an mbp, I still use it and feel no inclination to move completely over to apple products.

What I'm excited about having an OS designed for touch and mobile in my car is the potential for apps to change the way I interact with my vehicle. I don't believe you are locked in to one OS or another at all, because apps are being designed for android, iOS, and others. Instagram, Facebook, and a vast majority of the apps I use are available on both platforms.

What WILL decide it for me will be the design and hardware involved. For example: I chose to move to apple products because I personally prefer is external design and UX. The touch interface is just more responsive for me, and my preference for that will influence my decisions. I hope automakers like Volvo translates this over properly, and with Apple working with them on it, I feel more confident that they will.

phreanix··on Did The 900-Pound Gorilla Just Vanquish Your Startup Or Validate It?
The quote below is sooo relevant to me. It's what sidetracked me at my previous startup, getting caught up with what my competition was doing. I know better now. Listen to your customers. Iterate in THEIR direction. All else will fall into place.

>This is the most important takeaway. Sitting here a few weeks since Google’s launch, I can tell you with absolute certainty that nothing has actually changed. Looking back at the 6 years we’ve spent building BuySellAds, it’s clear that any time we spent thinking, researching, or reacting to our would-be competitors was a complete waste of time. In fact, there’s no better way to waste time than to think about (or even follow) what your competitors are doing. The only thing that truly matters are YOUR customers. I can’t tell you how hard it has been to get this engrained into my mind. It is by far the most important thing in building a business (to focus on your customers), yet so hard to practice when you see other activity and the glorious tech-headline touting presumed (or actual) success. They call it “customer driven development” not “competitor driven development” for a reason.

phreanix··on PrimeSense bought by Apple for $345M
I've been pondering on this lately. Apple certainly has set the bar with smartphones and tablets, making them practically indispensable. What next?

I don't have much expertise in OS's, but it seems to me that that IOS would be the perfect OS for smart machines. It's already optimized for mobile, wifi, cellular data, lightweight (relatively), and most of all, has a rich and vast developer community. Home Appliances that run on iOS would be a logical step, don't you think? In that case, this purchase would make sense. They could also be developing gaming units as expansion modules for AppleTV?

phreanix··on Healthcare.gov failed despite agile practices
What if product managers were trained to be more like sports coaches? Motivation, the right game plan, and working hand in hand with other products managers? Doesn't an organization like NASA work somewhat the same way? Different teams tackling different parts of a project and ending up with a rover on Mars?
phreanix··on Typhoon Haiyan kills 10,000 in Philippines
Yes it is. I'm hearing of reports that measuring equipment actually failed because they maxed out. They say there are actually some things they can't give an accurate measurement of because the equipment burst.
phreanix··on Typhoon Haiyan kills 10,000 in Philippines
Thank you for this.

It's easy to make armchair judgements and comparison when not armed with all the facts.

The truth is, the country will always have issues (bureaucracy, corruption, etc) dealing with these natural disasters, but combatting poverty will go much further in avoiding loss of life. The vast majority of those affected have a hand to mouth existence and have basically no choice but to live in areas that put them in the highest risk (low lying, coastal, flood prone) in structures that are all but guaranteed to fail in a storm.

phreanix··on Typhoon Haiyan kills 10,000 in Philippines
Not quite, japan is north of the Philippines and the storm hit the southern end. Still, I'm sure with a storm that large, it would make for a rough trip.
phreanix··on Typhoon Haiyan kills 10,000 in Philippines
I too was shocked. I went to work and the official number was below 100, I was floored to say the least to come home and discover the revised figure. It is absolutely insane, although in retrospect, I had hoped the country would be somewhat be better prepared and avoid such a huge number of lives lost, yet a small part of me expected it. I mean, one of, if not THE strongest storm in history? Hitting the south of the country? Sigh.
phreanix··on Typhoon Haiyan kills 10,000 in Philippines
What would you suggest is a good system/set-up that would have made a difference here?
phreanix··on Typhoon Haiyan kills 10,000 in Philippines
I've actually read about over a million people evacuated and in shelters.

Sadly, it seems international aid is more efficient at post-event response. The government tried to mobilize as well as it was able, but that will never be enough. (See: Katrina, japan earthquake/tsunami).

I still have friends I haven't heard from, and have friends who haven't heard from their family. The days of shocked reflection after disasters are always filled with what-ifs and fruitless hindsight. I agree with rdl above that innovations have to be made but most importantly a plan for better wealth creation for the country's poorest who are often the hardest hit. In these modern times, it shouldn't take 10,000 lives to spur that on.

phreanix··on Healthcare.gov failed despite agile practices
While recognizing the completely different context, I'd approach it like organized sports management/coaching. There you have disparate members with similar skillsets but different roles that as a whole contribute to one thing: winning. Trust, respect, belief in each other's abilities, and most of all, pushing HARD to accomplish a shared goal and vision. You have a captain who plays, a coach who is trusted completely, and different roles that are recognized as indispensable yet won't work without the others playing their part.

Of course not everyone wants to be pushed this hard, wants to be part of something like this, and is paid enough to take the obvious abuse. It's just something nice to fantasize about.

phreanix··on Startup CEOs: Screw Your Strengths
Some things like management principles, accounting, and others could be better learned in a short course instead of learning the hard way. In a struggling startup, a mistake like that could mean success or failure.
phreanix··on Startup CEOs: Screw Your Strengths
It's funny, I see so many crash courses offered on how to code, hack your way to a startup, etc., yet not a lot directed at actual startup owners/CEO's on exactly this: Now that you have a startup, what now?
phreanix··on Why women lose the dating game
Is it just me who noticed a possible messaging discrepancy? The articles covers what women have been taught ("world is your oyster", etc.) and how that has affected their eventual search, yet glosses over what men have been conditioned with all this time.

Suppose there's "messaging" disconnect? Women in this generation (and last's) have increasingly been conditioned and taught by their parents and various peers and mediums to be independent, pursue careers, and become all they can be. What has changed with how men are raised? Maybe they're still getting the same traditional message and lessons that they are meant to be the head of household, to provide, to find a woman who will bear their children (and not a whole lot else)? Then it would make sense that men and women will have almost diametrically opposed POV's and not find common ground?

phreanix··on Giant Concrete Arrows Across the American Landscape
I wonder what semi permanent structures we are building now that future generations will be looking at in 80+ years and wondering about our archaic technology.
phreanix··on Aeromobil: Roadable aircraft
For business travel I'm assuming convenience and time would be important factors. Anything that would take more than 2-3 hours of you personally driving or flying would be counterproductive if you can just get on a cheap commercial aircraft (with their accompanying safety record) and earn miles while you lean back and rest.

Not saying this won't have a practical purpose, but I'm not convinced business travel will be one of them. I'm thinking tesla roadster, it's a cool and expensive toy until new tech is developed that allows for more passengers, longer range, and more convenient takeoff/landing sites.

phreanix··on Google’s “20% time,” which brought you Gmail and AdSense, is now as good as dead

You realize of course that bank accounts are insured?

Editing bec I can't reply somehow:

The case you have was "tenuous circumstances"

I myself have experienced having my account cleaned out of a couple of thousand dollars (stolen/compromised ATM), and the bank had my funds back in 3 days. Pretty sure I won't be ruined in that time frame. Anybody who has 250k in the bank isn't living in tenuous Circumstances.
