photoGrant··on Nikon makes firmware for astronauts to block cosmic rays in photos
A manual sensor clean in most cameras does this. If mirrorless, leave the cap on

digital cameras carried on planes in the early days had cosmic ray issues too. So they sent them by boat. Hell. The ones today do. This is a weird article though. A lot of cameras compensate for dead pixels and cosmic rays.

It should also have been designed in every camera to have unique file names. It’s ridiculous they all don’t.

You me both. I used to stumble over every other word wrong but still get them all out and make a point. Now I get caught even saying some words without the brain shutting down and failing and playing catch up.

I want to believe it’s psychologically spread fear but it feels real

photoGrant··on Amsterdam Switches to 30 Km/h on 80% of its Roads
I like it mainly because this probably is limiting electric bikes more than restricting cars. It's a lil' difficult for cars to hit 50 /too often/ and I say this anecdotally but those bikes in a very 'bike friendly' city are blurring lines and only getting faster.
photoGrant··on What's inside this crater in Madagascar? [video]
This video sums up pretty much what most people do every other night. Get lost on a curiosity, google a bit, and realise you were an idiot from the beginning. Nothing special.

Cool to learn Madagascar and India split apart and what these volcano's do with a shifting surface but....

Duh, people live where water is.

they thought they had the Hollywood lock. Then turns out Hollywood isn't worth shit these days and treats em' like some post house on deathrow either way.

They bet too much, too hard, in all the wrong places. And tried lock-in and pricing out the indies. They should've done the Adobe thing and let those college kids pirate.

Dunno, very expected from this angle.

At that budget? A basic nVidia Jetson Board, a fancy mono sensor of choice, a bunch of extra CSI lanes beyond reasonable scope and I'd prefer to enjoy/embrace a software first pipeline/workflow stack for the data akin to gnu-radio-companion. That's where my itch would be. At this budget I'd want to be experimenting in the stitching sensors game. I'd prefer focus there if I'm throwing money away. Otherwise I'd scratch the itch more wisely with a pi stack :(

Just far too expensive. I'm the exact target audience for this thing, it's beyond scope financially. Create a barebones proof of concept kit, but this is a non-starter solution for 70% of the audience interested.

photoGrant··on Experimental tree-based writing interface for GPT-3
I want to say this is where the progress is being made currently. Not only having 'experts per domain' but 'experts per pairing'

The multiverse visualisation was really cool! This whole tool feels like it's designed for a writer from the future.

Think of production and rental companies like airlines. Some are the safest and well respected, some are a death trap. Most operate middle to right. A lot of salt has to be taken with a comment like that as it's more a legal response than a valid one. i.e. he worked for ARRI.

To clarify, ARRI can only speak on behalf of what they legally aim to sell. Not what the factory reality lets out the door, or what any production does with their equipment. They aren't evil, just a company.

You'd be surprised what shortcuts budgets end up creating...

Duh. These lights are frightening to work around sometimes. The UV alone you'll get a sunburn working inside a studio lit by them.

photoGrant··on Ask HN: Photographers: How did you learn?
Hard to say! But be keen on using your eyes to view the world above all. Think of the camera as a way to realise what you visualise.

Interesting reverse journalistic interview style marketing video lol.

Problem is, even if data isn't 'stored' with them, it does seem to have to pass through their servers. That's enough of a no, for me.
