phito··on My experience with Claude Code after two weeks of adventures
I just feel sad for all the professional developers out there that are still scared of the terminal.
phito··on LLM Inevitabilism
Indeed, I keep seeing comments stating that LLMs have completely changed their way of programming or even changed their lives. All I can think is, they must have been pretty bad at programming for the impact to be that dramatic.
phito··on The force-feeding of AI features on an unwilling public
You probably want the version of it they sold you in the advertising. Or are you actually happy with the slop they're currently shipping?
phito··on As a Labrador swam by me out to sea his owner said I hope he doesn't meet a seal
I feel like I'm having a stroke trying to read this title
phito··on Group of investors represented by YouTuber Perifractic buys Commodore
This comment will age like milk
phito··on OpenAI charges by the minute, so speed up your audio
> naming things is famously one of the two hard problems in computer science

Isn't ffmpeg made by a French person? As a francophone myself, I can tell you one of the biggest weakness of francophone programmers is naming things, even worse when it's in English. Maybe it's what's at play here.

phito··on Can your terminal do emojis? How big?
Guake and default gnome terminal
phito··on Can your terminal do emojis? How big?
My terminal doesn't even scale the text :(
phito··on Samsung Embeds IronSource Spyware App on Phones Across WANA
... What? You make no sense. Just let users that know what they are doing root their device while normies stay in userland.
phito··on The Grug Brained Developer (2022)
Sorry but I fail to see how your comments are relevant in this discussion.
phito··on YouTube's new anti-adblock measures
So what's your alternative if I don't want ads (content is not free to make), want the creators to be paid, and paying for premium is tempting YouTube to abuse pricing? (or so you say)
phito··on The Grug Brained Developer (2022)
What? We have dozens of microservices owned by multiple teams, but nothing stops you from cloning the git repository of another team's microservice and debug it the same way you would debug your own.
phito··on The Grug Brained Developer (2022)
We mostly have dotnet services in k8s, using Rider (IDE) and Telepresence for remote debugging. Having observability (OpenTelemetry) is also really useful.
phito··on Accumulation of cognitive debt when using an AI assistant for essay writing task
This is the worst thing ever. I have coworkers who literally cannot string three words together without making a grammar mistake, but recently they've been texting me with more-than-perfect grammar and a vast vocabulary.

These people are trying to fool everyone else making them think they are smarter/more educated than they actually are. They aren't fooling me, I've seen their real writing, I know it's not actually their text and thoughts, it really disgusts me.

phito··on The Grug Brained Developer (2022)
Yes, it's perfectly doable even if you're doing microservices. Not being able to debug your application is an engineering failure.
phito··on Agentic Coding Recommendations
Sure, keep slowly offloading more and more of your brain to technology. Until you won't be needed anymore.
phito··on Self-Host and Tech Independence: The Joy of Building Your Own
It's just bad faith argument after bad faith argument with these contrarian folks. I have to laugh every time I see systemd mentioned as an "easier" alternative.
phito··on Agentic Coding Recommendations
If I have to review all code code it's writing, I'd rather write it myself (maybe with the help of an LLM).

> anyway, obviously do whatever you want, but deriding something you've not looked in to isn't a hugely thoughtful process for adapting to a changing world.

I have tried it. Not sure I want to be part of such world, unfortunately.

> the experience is pretty much like being a senior dev with a bunch of very eager juniors who read very fast.

I... don't want that. Juniors just slow me down because I have to check what they did and fix their mistakes.

(this is in the context of professional software development, not making scripts, tinkering etc)

phito··on Agentic Coding Recommendations
I will definitely sleep on agents. Normal LLM use, fine, but I am not giving up reasoning.
phito··on Self-Host and Tech Independence: The Joy of Building Your Own
Oh my god no, docker is so damn useful I will never return to package managers/manual installation.
phito··on AI makes the humanities more important, but also weirder
> There's a real risk of LLMs flattening the educational journey into a kind of performance optimization game

It's already been the case for a long time, it's just going to get worse.

phito··on Codex CLI is going native
Imagine writing a CLI in JS in the first place...
phito··on I made a chair
I've seen people doing it with steam
phito··on Ukraine destroys more than 40 military aircraft in drone attack deep in Russia
Power lines mess up your communication signals.
phito··on Trying to teach in the age of the AI homework machine
Not really. I had fellow students who understood nothing, could not program at all, but could tell you the answer to question 6 of the 2015 Java exam because they had memorized it all.
phito··on Show HN: AnyLM – ChatGPT-Like UI for Local LLMs
Looks alright, but I don't understand why I would pay for this when projects like OpenWebUI are open source, free, and much more complete.

Also no Linux support planned :(

phito··on Claude 4
I don't see how a LLM could do better than a bot, eg renovate
phito··on Ask HN: Do people actually pay for small web tools?
How does it compare to the free, self hostable https://it-tools.tech/ ?
phito··on Plain Vanilla Web
> Some times I feel like I’m taking crazy pills when I read HN lately

Often it just reads like contrarianism for the sake or it

phito··on Vibe Coding Is Fun–But Vibe Refactoring Pays the Bills
I really, really don't understand this either. Sometimes I feel like I must be using different LLMs than some HNers because my experience of them is the complete opposite of what they describe.
