phito··on Thin desires are eating life
Very nicely written. I've been slowly removing thin desires from my life. It's hard to do at first, but what I've noticed is once I am free from them, I do not miss them at all. Almost like I was under a spell.
phito··on If AI replaces workers, should it also pay taxes?
How do you tax companies once they've become more powerful than the government (which can be equated to a company representing humans), and don't need humans anymore because they've automated labor?

For now we can tax them because they depend on us. Once they don't need us anymore, it's over, they'll let us starve and carry on.

phito··on What is the nicest thing a stranger has ever done for you?
I can't really think of anything unfortunately, except courtesy stuff like holding a door. People don't really interact with strangers where I live.
phito··on RoboCrop: Teaching robots how to pick tomatoes
No, I'm from Belgium and we get awful tasteless tomatoes from the Netherlands.
phito··on RoboCrop: Teaching robots how to pick tomatoes
Will they manage to make mass produced tomatoes when worse than they are now? Seriously they're so bad, they're not even worth purchasing in my opinion.

phito··on Average DRAM price in USD over last 18 months
You don't want to be in the same room as these when they're running.
phito··on Autism should not be treated as a single condition
That's exactly my issue with "autism" because it feels like lumping a bunch of things together just for the sake of simplifying health care. Meanwhile you have a bunch of people that have completely different symptoms, experiences and causes with the same diagnostic.
phito··on Autism should not be treated as a single condition
It's not a one dimensional spectrum with just severity as variable. It's a multi dimensional spectrum, you could potentially assign a "condition" to each dimension (hypersensitivity, OCD, rigid thinking, non-verbality, ...)

phito··on All it takes is for one to work out
I've seen plenty of small channels having a one time hit that didn't really change anything in the long run
phito··on All it takes is for one to work out
Maybe move to a different country with a better work culture? I don't know where you are from, I'm from Belgium and the only truly toxic corporate places I've seen here were the ones managed by Americans.
phito··on How good engineers write bad code at big companies
>I know how to fix this but I'm not "allowed to" can eat away at you easily.

This really is the worst, and that's why I left my first job. Funnily enough, I just took that job back after a few years but I am now the lead and sole developer on it, I'm having the time of my life doing what I've always wanted to do back then, and seeing the product now flourish.

The bad code didn't really matter, it was the fact that I was not allowed to improve it and forced to build new features on top of crappy code that made me quit in the first place.

phito··on WinApps: Run Windows apps as if they were a part of the native Linux OS
How good is it in practice? I've found windows VMs under a Linux host to be frustrating to use, and get poor performances no matter how much resources I throw at it. The clock keeps getting messed up all the time. UI is sluggish.

I now use a dedicated windows laptop in RDP and it is such a better experience better than a VM.

phito··on Human brains are preconfigured with instructions for understanding the world
I don't know either, maybe epigenetics play a part in this (Some information transferred from the mother cells to the child)?
phito··on Human brains are preconfigured with instructions for understanding the world
The even crazier thing is that DNA does not encode any of that. Behaviour and morphology is not directly encoded in there, you'll only find recipes for proteins. The zigote will divide into billions of cells that share that same recipe book. Depending on the electric and chemical signals surrounding cells are sending, individual cells get their "personalities" or function. This cell colony forms an organism which emerges from the sum of morphology and behaviour of all cells. But you'll find no recipe for an arm in DNA, it is the result of the work of the collective intelligence that is your body.

I do find it bad in Belgium, mostly on big cars like SUVs. Another reason for me to dislike them. Unfortunately they are getting more and more common.
phito··on Windows 11 adds AI agent that runs in background with access to personal folders
But who is letting interns with no experience take architectural and technological decisions for a core feature such as the start menu? These are the people that should be blamed.
phito··on Windows 11 adds AI agent that runs in background with access to personal folders
They said Microsoft not windows. Modern dotnet is a good example of something Microsoft has been doing right. Windows on the other hand...

phito··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
Good point, I just made a donation to the wine team. I still think buying Steam hardware is a good way to signal to the market that I want to see more of this.
phito··on [dead]
Why post files without explaining why we should care about this?
phito··on I don’t need a Steam Machine
It's the same as the steam deck: I don't enjoy video games anymore, I've actually never really enjoyed gaming except for a handful of titles. But I'll be damned, I love that Valve is bringing gaming to Linux and I'll buy the hardware just to support the cause. The people in my life that have been using the "I need Windows for my games" reason (or excuse ;)) to not switch to Linux are now slowly but surely leaving Windows!
