phito··on GOG's new owner can't stand Windows either: 'It's such poor-quality software '
I can't agree more with you. I know multiple people that keep complaining about windows and Chrome and yet they seem to have no interest in even trying Firefox or Linux.

It totally has abusive relationship vibes. It's like they are being captured by convenience, learning something new being too much of an asshle to them.

They also like to take jabs at me for using Linux, but then their jaws drop when I transfer a file to a server in one second using `scp` while it takes them about 20 clicks with their windows GUI...

phito··on Let's be honest, Generative AI isn't going all that well
It's crazy how some people here will just make all the assumptions possible in order to refuse to believe you. Anyone who's used a good model with open code or equivalent will know that it's plausible. Refactoring is really cheap now when paired with someone competent.

I'm doing the same as your co-founder currently. In a few days, I've rewritten old code that took previous employees months to do. Their implementation sucked and barely worked, the new one is so much better and has tests to prove it.

phito··on Anthropic blocks third-party use of Claude Code subscriptions
There's been a lot of very bad bugs for a long time and they don't seem to care about fixing them. Eg the screen flicker: https://github.com/anthropics/claude-code/issues/3648
phito··on Opus 4.5 is not the normal AI agent experience that I have had thus far
It doesn't have to be micro services, just code that is decoupled properly, so it can search and build its context easily.
phito··on AWS raises GPU prices 15% on a Saturday, hopes you weren't paying attention
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You%27ll_own_nothing_and_be_ha...

And as we've seen, once the market has been captured, they will start enshittifying everything to squeeze as much profit as they can and we'll have no alternatives.

phito··on I switched from VSCode to Zed
Claude recently got LSP plugins
phito··on Web development is fun again
Totally agree. I've been using blazor server + Claude for project and it just removes all the stupid complexity of having react + a rest API.
phito··on I'm a developer for a major food delivery app
So we're reposting fake reddit engagement bait posts here now? Come on, this is barely credible. Even if it seemed credible, this is not how you whistleblow effectively.

To be clear I'm not trying to defend these companies, they suck and getting fast food delivered at home is stupid. But the way the post is clearly written by someone with surface level technical knowledge, passed through a LLM. And the provide absolutely no evidence.

phito··on OpenAI's cash burn will be one of the big bubble questions of 2026
From what I've seen, 99% of people are using the free version of ChatGPT. Those who are using Claude are on the subscription, very often the $100/month one.
phito··on Karpathy on Programming: “I've never felt this much behind”
State of the art.
phito··on Stranger Things creator says turn off “garbage” settings
This is the way.
phito··on LLMs Are Not Fun
Nope, I wouldn't. I wish for competent local LLMs that don't require a supercomputer at home to run. One can dream!
phito··on LLMs Are Not Fun
I don't agree, I looked at most of the code the AI wrote in my project, I have a good idea of how it is architectured because I actively planned it. If I have a bug in my orders, I know I have to go to the orders service. Then it's not much harder than reading the code my coworkers write at my daily job.
phito··on LLMs Are Not Fun
I find that restricting it to very small modules that are clearly separated works well. It does sometimes do weird things, but I'm there to correct it with my experience.

I just wish I could have competent enough local LLMs and not rely on a company.

phito··on LLMs Are Not Fun
I really doesn't. I just ditched my wordpress/woocommerce webshop for a custom one that I made in 3 days with Claude, in C# blazor. It is better in every single way than my old webshop, and I have control over every aspect of it. It's totally production ready.

The code is as good or even better than I would have written. I gave Claude the right guidelines and made sure it stayed in line. There are a bunch of playwright tests ensuring things don't break over time, and proving that things actually work.

I didn't have to mess with any of the HTML/css which is usually what makes me give up my personal projects. The result is really, really good, and I say that as someone who's been passionate about programming for about 15 years.

3 days for a complete webshop with Stripe integration, shipping labels and tracking automation, SMTP emails, admin dashboard, invoicing, CI/CD, and all the custom features that I used to dream of.

Sure it's not a crazy innovative projet, but it brings me a ton of value and liberates me from these overengineered, "generic" bulky CMS. I don't have to pay $50 for a stupid plugin (that wouldn't really fit my needs anyway) anymore.

The future is both really exciting and scary.

phito··on AI Slop Report: The Global Rise of Low-Quality AI Videos
Do you believe we can automatically detect AI generated videos, without having too many false positives and without spending huge amounts of resources playing the cat and mouse game?

It's not possible and it's not economically viable. Best we could do is some sort of signature to prove that the source of a video is trusted by the proof issuer.

phito··on Phoenix: A modern X server written from scratch in Zig
It's right there in my comment
phito··on Phoenix: A modern X server written from scratch in Zig
Screenshots are just completely broken. People always tell me to use other apps like flameshot but IME it just doesn't work and I don't want to have to mess around so much to take screenshots.

I'm still using Wayland because it's what came with my distro (endeavour OS, gnome), but it's really strange how it came broken out of the box.

phito··on Over 40% of deceased drivers in vehicle crashes test positive for THC: Study
How are people not wearing seatbelt? I've never seen a car that doesn't make a constant annoying noise if you're not wearing it while driving. Do they mod the car to disable this safety system? That seems too far stretched...
phito··on I spent a week without IPv4 (2023)
Myeah... I've had weird issues on my network that I could only resolve by disabling IPv6. Granted, it's probably my fault, but if everything still works fine with ipv4 that's fine to me. One day I will get into it and learn how it work and maybe I'll get it figured out... One day...
phito··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2026?
Engagement bait will get amplified even more, with the goal of gathering human generated data and user retention.

Lots of new subreddits have been popping up this year, in different languages, that are flooded with AI generated rage and engagement bait posts. Facebook is feeding boomers with the same kind of slop.

We will see the repercussions of this on society.

phito··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2026?
I wish, but from what I've seen, most "normies" don't care at all as long as they are entertained. It makes me depressed seeing my friends consuming and sharing all that AI slop while either believing it's true, or not even asking themselves if it is. At least they're having fun while they still can... right?
phito··on Your job is to deliver code you have proven to work
Too real :(
phito··on Your job is to deliver code you have proven to work
I find doing my job as best as I can intrinsically rewarding. Even tho I am getting paid peanuts and have to give more than half of those peanuts to my government. I'm that kind of sucker.
phito··on Your job is to deliver code you have proven to work
I often write PR descriptions, in which I write a short explanation and try to anticipate some comments I might get. Well, every time I do, I will still get those exact comments because nobody bothers reading the description.

Not to say you shouldn't write descriptions, I will keep doing it because it's my job. But a lot of people just don't care enough or are too distracted to read them.

phito··on How getting richer made teenagers less free
That sounds like maladaptive anxiety.
phito··on Testing a cheaper laminar flow hood
Ah, I've actually built one myself recently and it works great for plant tissue culture. Been using it for years now. Just used a commercial HEPA filter, a centrifugal fan, and a wooden box to equalize the pressure. Then it's a matter of regulating the voltage to the fan until you get the right amount of pressure to get laminar flow.
phito··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
What's a good, non-chromium alternative?
phito··on Is Mozilla trying hard to kill itself?
150M seems like such a small number for something that would have so much impact
phito··on Thin desires are eating life
I agree, I would define those *thin desires" as whatever I'm engaging in a lot automatically, but if I were to pause and ask myself "do I really want to do this? Is this beneficial to me or am I being exploited?", part of me would say no. My "thin desires" might not be someone else's. We each have to take the time to ask ourselves these questions in order to figure it out.
