phillytom··on Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (October 2010 Edition)
Conshohocken, PA - Monetate

We have fun problems at scale - real-time decision making plus web analytics. We have hired people from HN before and I will go hound them to post about how much fun we are having. :)

We sell SAAS to internet retailers allowing them to test site content, target to visitor segments, and personalize web experiences.

Currently hiring for positions here: http://monetate.com/about/jobs/ - product engineers, front-end developers, QA, sys ops

We work primarily in Python and Javascript but are looking for talented engineers of any background who like solving new problems.

We are backed by First Round Capital and are growing quickly.

Product Engineers - Conshohocken - PA

Same as the last time around Monetate is hiring - Conshohocken (Philly suburb). We have hired people who found us here - these threads are great.

We're a SAAS provider of testing, targeting and personalization tools (i.e. segmentation, A/B testing, MVT) to internet retailers. We've got existing high-volume customers. We're small, profitable, and we're growing fast.

We're hiring engineering talent - we work with Javascript, Python, Django, Google Closure, MySQL, and all sorts of AWS in EC2.

We're looking for sharp engineers who are comfortable working across our stack and really want to be in a startup: http://www.ventureloop.com/firstroundcap/jobdetail.php?jobid... - we're only looking for local people for these roles at this point.

We're also hiring front-end engineers who want to help build and test experiments and are experienced in working with production-quality cross-browser HTML/CSS and Javascript without frameworks.

We have fun problems at scale and we get instant feedback from our clients on everything we put out.

Feel free to email me tjanofsky monetate com.

phillytom··on Ask HN: How much should I ask for?
I disagree strongly. Changing your price isn't wavering, it's negotiating. Companies hiring consultants aren't that different than most parties you would negotiate with.

For example they tend to respond to standard negotiating techniques, such as quoting them a higher standard rate then offering a discount in negotiation.

Walking away is fine as long as your confident in your ability to immediately get work at your rate but it doesn't prove your rate out - people paying it does.

There is a slightly dated, but highly relevant book I'd recommend - Janet Ruhl's Computer Consultant's Guide - http://www.amazon.com/Computer-Consultants-Guide-Strategies-...

phillytom··on Ask HN: How much should I ask for?
After many years billing as a consultant I found that I was happiest when I ignored bill-thru rates and just focused on getting a fair rate commensurate with my market value.

Unless the gig you are ending is unusual, or short term, it would appear that your market value is at least 45/hr. I would either offer that, or if you want to test your value, increase it to 50. If the company does not value your time at that rate, they won't pay it. As a consultant it's important to remember when you're discussing rates with a client, it's not a reflection of your personal worth, just your economic value.

You can test your market value by either offering them a lower rate, or trying to find other work at 45-50 hr.

Over time I learned that when I felt I was getting too busy it was time to rate limit the work I was getting by raising my rates. Or vice-versa.

phillytom··on Jet brains Pycharm - New Python IDE by creators of IntelliJ
If you are new to their products, one quick way to learn your way around (since so much of the app is exposed to the keyboard) is to just work through the keyboard shortcuts trying them out. I don't see the doc for PyCharm yet, but most are the same as Intellij - http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/documentation/documentation.ht...

Good ones include: Command-w: smart expanding select Shift-command-N: Navigate to file. Note you can use wildcards in this box Command-p: param info

1. Yes, this is true in IntelliJ (the root for all these projects) as well. As these things go, it is a pretty lightweight project - just point it at a directory and go. But yes, required.

2. On Mac: Option-Command-F11 toggles this.

Overall, I really like this product, but I've been been an IntelliJ fan for years. Things I like:

- diff tool - scm integration - todo list - refactorings, although obviously the current set is limited - very keyboard friendly

Still need to try the debugger and figure out how to set multiple Python paths.
