philip1209··on A Mini Data Center
I didn't talk about it in the article, but my strategy is:

1. Local time machine backup (for disk failure recovery)

2. All the Docker container mount in a particular directory, and I periodically sync that directory to an S3 bucket

3. Planning to have Backblaze for more disaster recovery

All of these would have downtime in the event of an issue, but that's ok with me.

philip1209··on Canadian MP proposes life sentence for trafficking over 40mg of fentanyl
I predict we'll have an American politician pursue a Singapore-style death penalty for fentanyl this year, perhaps at the state level first.

philip1209··on Macrodata Refinement
I'd add in The Bridge - original Swedish version with subtitles - is another of my favorite shows. The Nordic Noir genre has mix of intellectualism and misanthropy that I love in shows (including Severance).

philip1209··on No Calls
I've found that a good YouTube video can replace demo meetings, too.

We got a later-stage startup to integrate with our API entirely off of a demo video.

philip1209··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
Finland has almost 3x the GDP per capita as Romania [1]. I think being rich (i.e., good social programs) accounts for the trust gap.

philip1209··on Finland's zero homeless strategy (2021)
Worth pointing out that Finland is one of the most ethnically homogeneous societies in Europe - only ~10% of the population is of foreign origin and background [1]. So, like Japan, it's easier to have a high-trust society if you eschew immigration.

Edit: Just to be clear, I'm very pro-immigration. I just think that studying rich homogeneous societies doesn't result in many useful takeaways for countries like the USA.

philip1209··on Los Angeles fires expose inflated US home prices
I think the argument is that house prices are high because the government backs housing loans, so they don't represent a free market. Easy access to government creates more demand than supply.
philip1209··on All clocks are 30 seconds late
Perhaps, to be more precise, "How should clocks without a second-hand round?"
philip1209··on US credit card defaults jump to highest level since 2010
Wasn't this sometimes a bug instead of a feature?

Loaning based on cash instead of income is how Brex and Ramp took on Amex.

(obligatory: "commercial != consumer")

philip1209··on Is Iceland getting ready to join the EU?
I wonder if Iceland's debt issues could interfere with this:

(Though, perhaps it helps that the UK is no longer in the EU).

philip1209··on 'AI-powered judge' takes boxing closer to brave new world it appears to seek
Can it also detect traumatic brain injuries?
philip1209··on Nullboard: Kanban board in a single HTML file
That's cool - I've been looking for a simple self-hosted kanban. A backend is a requirement for me to use it across devices, though. But, I love the direction.
philip1209··on Waymo will bring autonomous vehicles to Tokyo
Curious whether they will open doors automatically. It's a faux pas to try opening a taxi door yourself in Japan.
philip1209··on Fractional Jobs – Job Board for Fractional Work
Europe isn’t known for being progressive.

philip1209··on Akamai Remembers Danny Lewin
Highly recommend his biography, "No Better Time: The Brief, Remarkable Life of Danny Lewin."

He was a commando turned computer scientist turned billionaire who died fighting terrorists at the age of 31. And, remarkably - 9/11 was a big turning point for Akamai because it was a first news event that people monitored using the internet, so many news websites had to turn on Akamai to handle the traffic surge.

philip1209··on Kenya and "the decline of the greatest coffee" (2021)
Everything is subjective, but the most prominent restaurant ranking is "The World's 50 Best Restaurants", which polls many chefs to get a ranking every year and does a decent job.

Roastful is trying to apply a similar methodology to coffee roasting, by polling 32 industry experts.

And, the #1 roaster in their rankings this year is Tim Wendelboe.

You can debate the method, but it's not total wankery.

philip1209··on Kenya and "the decline of the greatest coffee" (2021)
Tim Wendelboe (perhaps the greatest coffee roaster) has been talking about this on his latest Q&A podcast. A rigmarole for exports plus climate change are causing issues.

He does a two-episode deep dive into the Kenyan coffee market here, which is worth a listen: https://timwendelboe.no/2024/03/inside-kenyas-coffee-market-...

philip1209··on Archetypes of LLM apps
Sorry I hadn’t heard of this. It’s just my ignorance. I’ll take a look and consider editing it in.
philip1209··on Archetypes of LLM apps
Oh hey - I wrote this. Thanks for sharing. My goal was explaining to non-technical businesspeople what AI is actively being used for, so they can identify places to build or buy within their own organizations.
philip1209··on Two undersea cables in Baltic Sea disrupted
It seems that the obvious solution could be Starlink-style meshes.

Can anybody comment on how fragile the Starlink protocol would be during a war? If its line-of-sight, presumably it would be hard to jam?

philip1209··on Norwegian fishermen hunting for halibut caught a US nuclear sub
Thanks for the detailed answer!
philip1209··on Norwegian fishermen hunting for halibut caught a US nuclear sub
Is max torque on an typical nuclear submarine limited by the max reactor output, or can they rely on batteries to exceed this temporarily?
philip1209··on Norwegian Fishermen Hunting for Halibut Caught a US Nuclear Sub
Sorry, I was referring to Part 121 operations and missed it in an edit.
philip1209··on Norwegian fishermen hunting for halibut caught a US nuclear sub
Fascinating - I wonder what the procedure is for a jammed propeller on a sub. I’m used to airplanes, which have redundancies for everything, but a sub propeller is really a single point of failure. Potentially seaweed or rope could become entangled, right?

Would the sub typically have to surface to manually clear the propeller? Or, does it have enough torque to just (noisily) obliterate most entanglements?

philip1209··on Wonder Announces Acquisition of Grubhub
Grubhub has revenue, which means they might be able to finance the acquisition with debt.
philip1209··on M4 Mac mini's efficiency
That's great - I wonder if you could get one working with Kamal [1] and Cloudflare Tunnel [2] to run public web apps from a home computer?

philip1209··on TCAS averts possible head-on collision in Austin
General discussion point: TCAS works (well) for flying aircraft.

But, I believe it disables below 1000f above ground. And, we’ve seen many issues recently with aircraft on or near the ground - from the collision in Japan to many near-misses on the ground.

So, how might we make a system as robust as TCAS for aircraft on or near the ground?
