phil··on The Magazine
As always, depends what you're doing, but this is not a crazy statement.

There are certainly fewer bombshells in iOS6 than iOS 5, but it's no stretch to say that adopting iOS 5 early on was worth 100s of hours -- it had huge improvements for dev.

Also keep in mind that the fewer OS versions you target the less testing you have to do.

phil··on Ask HN: Your best passive income sources?
You still have to be pretty pessimistic to think taxes will rise faster than your rate of return!
phil··on Assets of Palo Alto gaming company OnLive were sold off for just $4.8 million
Come on - your local bakery (even if it's a chain, even if you don't like it as much as you used to) is a low-margin enterprise. Getting screwed out of thousands of dollars is tough on places like that.

Plus that was just the example. If they were net-30 on the break room food, it's a safe bet a bunch of freelancers and other local businesses also had losses.

phil··on Assets of Palo Alto gaming company OnLive were sold off for just $4.8 million
Just hate to see this part:

OnLive was a frequent customer or Prolific Oven Bakery in Palo Alto, said Regina Chan, daughter of the owner of the local chain. By the time the company went through its insolvency in August, it owed the bakery $2,000, which represented about a month's worth of Onlive's orders, she said.

phil··on Living in a Van
This is common in the kayaking/climbing community.

Every paddler I know living out of a van gets an old Toyota Previa. Why? They're cheap, fuel-efficient, readily available, easy to gut the back, and deal with dirt roads fairly well.

phil··on MyVR (YC W12) raises $1.4M to attack the vacation rental industry
Yeah, they totally picked the wrong 4-letter domain.
phil··on NASA Rover Finds Old Streambed on Martian Surface
It's still pretty magical to see an actual picture of actual alluvium on the surface.
phil··on iOS 6 Breaks the App Store
I wonder if that was part of the reason for the redesign.
phil··on iOS 6 Breaks the App Store
I'm concerned about this.

App store search has had a heavy bias towards the top 4-5 results. This will only make that bias stronger.

Or sue to maintain control of it. You know, either way.
phil··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
Impossible to offer pricing advice without knowing about your traffic. Done right, you are offering a fairly valuable form of advertising and one that restaurateurs understand well.
phil··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
That's kind of a strange attitude to have. Your competition (more or less) charges $50: http://www.charlesproxy.com/
phil··on Marathon Man: A Michigan dentist’s improbable transformation
I think Mark Singer's writing is great. Did you think he represented the situation accurately, though?
phil··on The App Store Nightmare
Actually, if you plant hybridized seeds, you have to buy seeds each year since you can't grow your own seed crop. That's farmer DRM.

If you go organic and plant all heirloom/non-hybrid seeds then you won't have that problem. That's kind of like switching to Linux.

phil··on Frank Gehry Is Designing Facebook’s New Office Building And That’s Sad
Have you spent time in many Gehry buildings?

For example, the EMP here in Seattle looks pretty weird from the outside. I can see how you'd call it unpleasant/memorable based on pictures or driving by but once you go in it's great. Some beautiful interior spaces, well organized, works well for the purposes I've been there for.

phil··on Amazon Glacier
Thanks -- I had no idea you could just buy a tape library off the rack (more or less).
phil··on Amazon Glacier
Storage experts: I'd love to know more about what might be backing this service.

What kind of system has Amazon most likely built that takes 3-4 hours to perform retrieval? What are some examples of similar systems, and where are they installed?

phil··on Stop Using The Cup of Coffee vs. $0.99 Cent App Analogy
The operative difference between buying cups of coffee and paid apps is actually this:

If you try to spend $50 on cups of coffee you'll quickly become twitchy and have to stop, but if you keep pressing the Buy button in the app store you can easily get the thing done.

phil··on Thanks for your patience about all the (YC S12)
How about this?

phil··on How an app with 200,000 downloads led to developer homelessness
Whoa, yeah. These guys have the #2 free iPad app and have been gained in sales rank every day the game has been available.

Freaking out because conversion rate on their IAP is lower than expected seems a little premature. If they keep getting 30k installs a day, they will end up with plenty of options for monetizing the thing.

phil··on App.net funded with $500,000.
That approach worked great for Quora early on.
phil··on Bezos pledges $2.6M to support same sex marriage
Agreed, but that fight is over: it's going to be on the ballot.
phil··on Bezos pledges $2.6M to support same sex marriage
That's what they meant. A yes vote on Ref 74 will legalize same-sex marriage.
phil··on The Mac App Store’s future of irrelevance
Consider inspecting the MAS receipt and issuing them a license in your own scheme if you are leaving. At least then you get to keep your customers.
phil··on SmartAsset (YC S12) Helps With Tough Financial Decisions Like Homebuying
The design of this site is really impressive. If you're working on a web product you should be taking notes.

Probably the #1 problem for a brand new site offering financial advice is to establish credibility. Lots of past entrants did a lousy job of this, but these guys have nailed it on day 1. Their site looks a lot like the NYT's info features, and it helps them look authoritative.

phil··on The real reason we’re upset about Sparrow’s acquisition
The funny thing is, they probably should have priced lower. If you look at their rank history on Mac and iOS, they saw big grossing rank bumps the few times they dropped the price.

Maybe that's just a short-term effect (yay, sale!), but based on the week they sold Sparrow for $4.99, there's a good chance they would have made more long term.

App store economics are weird.

phil··on The real reason we’re upset about Sparrow’s acquisition
Mac app had a run rate of over $1m its first six months, per this interview: http://articles.businessinsider.com/2011-08-26/tech/30036420...

Who knows what was happening internally, but on the surface: strong team of 5, $1-1.5m revenue their first year, tremendous reputation and another product in the pipeline. What more could you ask for to make a long term go of it?

phil··on Top Grossing Finance Mobile App Generates Barely $80,000 Annually
1) Maybe I am just slow, but it would probably take me more than 12 weeks to create an app like this. Well designed mobile stuff can be deceptively time consuming.

phil··on Top Grossing Finance Mobile App Generates Barely $80,000 Annually
Here's a chart of their Canada rankings: http://www.appannie.com/app/ios/budget-with-back-in-black/ra...

Looks like they only do well in English-speaking markets, so they'll mostly live and die by their US performance. So it's more accurate to call them the #75 finance app (that's about where they seem to hover). $80k/yr to be number 75 in your biggest market doesn't seem quite as bad.

An interesting question is: why are they #1 in Canada? In the US, there are dozens of better selling budget trackers. What's different about Canada?
