pheatherlite··on Saving cloud costs by writing our own database
How fast can reads be thou? Even if skipping along a fixed offset, reading 4 byte identifiers to filter out location updates for vehicles, that's still a sequential scan of a massive file. Wouldn't this read issue become a choking point to a degree that would make growth a curse? Then you get into weird architectures that exist solely to facilitate predigested reads?
pheatherlite··on Debian Git Monorepo
Most developers jump on the hype train and don't stop to think about ramifications or requirements or purpose. Having said that, monorepos have their use cases, and they help eliminate the need to have convoluted tool chains whose entire purpose is to ensure version compatibility between various components of the system... before you can even start making a line of change on the dev machine.. or some asinine docker abstraction that you must spin up... essentially, if everything is in one place (and not conceived by antisocial pranksters), you bet it's meant to be together. This makes it easier for any number of different life cycle teams to pick up a project and not waste time chasing down silly time wasting issues.
pheatherlite··on Someone has been attempting to DDoS us for weeks and we do nothing
Complexity is the criminal in any scenario. However, if we simply focus on a vanilla installation of docker, then the namespace isolation alone can be viewed as a step up from running directly on the os. Of course complexity means a vulnerability in the docker stack exposes you to additional risk, whereas a systemd svc running as a service account is likely to contain any 0day better.

Why do they need an app server at all? The website, to my initial glance, seems to be a brochure for the desktop product. Surely static pages and static assets would be even more resilient against a ddos since it's just bog standard webserver streaming out the static resources. Mount a memory based fs and conventional disk latency concerns become mitigated, too.
pheatherlite··on Large language models can do jaw-dropping things. But nobody knows why.
Firefox on Android is a blessing.
pheatherlite··on New York Times takedown domino effect hits nearly 2000 Wordle clones
Why is it that you can write from scratch implantation of games like quake or doom or AE, but something as simple as wordle is what gets enforced. Smh I kinda liked nyt, not sure what all this is about
pheatherlite··on British Library cyber incident review [pdf]
So Tom, Dick and Harry all have Terminal rdp access into the core infrastructure and they slept well knowing that they had - what was it? Ah, yes, - prevented clipboard copying as a hardening measure. That'll stop them pirates in their tracks. Nicely written post mortem. Though I can't help but notice the amount of committees and acronyms. Is it a British thing?
pheatherlite··on The hater's guide to Kubernetes
Docker bare bones or docker compose. Run as systemd services and have docker run the container as a service account. Manual orchestration is all you need. Anything else like rancher or whatever are just fluff.
pheatherlite··on The hater's guide to Kubernetes
Why are people still scared of k8s? At certain jobs thresholds, it is worth every ounce of effort to maintain it. Better yet, go managed.
pheatherlite··on WinRAR 7.0
WinAce, what fond memories. Remind me again why it never caught on?
pheatherlite··on No CMS? Writing Our Blog in React (2023)
Most definitely. There are reasons to reinvent the wheel sometimes, this, however, maybe be a low roi reason...
pheatherlite··on AMD funded a drop-in CUDA implementation built on ROCm: It's now open-source
The only reason our lab bought 20k worth of Nvidia gpu cards rather than amd was the cuda industry standard (might as wellbe). It's kind of mind boggling how much business amd must be losing over this.
pheatherlite··on Stop Using Opera Browser and Opera GX
Not seeing a strong technical argument here. Ethical, sure. But headlines urging urgent ceasing use of a browser should have substantial reasoning behind it.
