phantom_of_cato··on Scientific grant applications are getting heavier on hype
> you might have a romantic impression about what science is and how it works.

Not really. But something which is already bad can still get worse.

phantom_of_cato··on Scientific grant applications are getting heavier on hype
Sorry, I wasn't referring to the submitted article, but to the one I had linked to in my comment. There's a list of the terms above the chart in page 6 of the PDF, for example: https://cspi.substack.com/api/v1/file/2f0c41b8-a81b-45b1-934...

The fact that these terms are political isn't controversial. In fact, you can trace back the popularization of some of them in political discourse to landmark SCOTUS decisions and executive orders. See [1], for example.

[1]: https://www.thirteen.org/wnet/supremecourt/rights/landmark_r... "The Supreme Court, in a 5-4 decision written by Justice Lewis Franklin Powell, ruled that a state may constitutionally consider race as a factor in its university admissions to promote educational diversity, but only if considered alongside other factors and on a case-by-case basis."

phantom_of_cato··on Scientific grant applications are getting heavier on hype
Not really, but even if it was, what meaningful difference would it make? You can see the list if the terms in the article, and it's hard to deny that they are very political.
phantom_of_cato··on Scientific grant applications are getting heavier on hype
They are also getting heavier on highly politicized terms. [1]

phantom_of_cato··on US Government Bans Export of Nvidia A100 and H100 GPUs to China and Russia
Physical production of things during a war is probably quite hard. Also, one of the likely scenarios for the war is a blockade enforced by missiles. [1]

phantom_of_cato··on Fake musicians: a million-dollar Instagram verification scheme
IMO, verification should be available to anyone willing to provide a solid ID, physically go to an office for that, and pay a small fee for the work required to check the validity of the ID. Validation for celebrity accounts should probably be harder, not easier, due to higher risk of identity fraud.

I find the current weird status-signalling thing that it currently is quite ridiculous.

phantom_of_cato··on Cloudflare's abuse policies and approach
> Not because the content of those sites wasn't abhorrent — it was — but because security services most closely resemble Internet utilities.

> Just as the telephone company doesn't terminate your line if you say awful, racist, bigoted things, we have concluded in consultation with politicians, policy makers, and experts that turning off security services because we think what you publish is despicable is the wrong policy. To be clear, just because we did it in a limited set of cases before doesn’t mean we were right when we did. Or that we will ever do it again.

Based. It seems that @eastdakota is following through with his plan: https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/12/cloudflares-ceo-...

phantom_of_cato··on Hayao Miyazaki's thoughts on an artificial intelligence
This is not his thoughts on AI, or even on anything at all. This is mostly just him browbeating someone.

They show him a computer model of a human body, which an ML model has learned to control. The ML model sometimes uses the head as an extra leg, and apparently that triggered him because it reminded him of his disabled friend or something.

The one sentence "humans have lost faith in themselves" in the end is closet part to any kind of meaningful commentary.

phantom_of_cato··on Google to roll out anti-disinformation campaign in some EU countries
> The research was spread over seven experiments, including with a group of Americans over 18 years old who watch political news on YouTube. Jigsaw exposed around 5.4 million U.S. YouTubers to an inoculation video, with almost a million watching for at least 30 seconds.

The plain non-Orwellian word for an "inoculation video" is, of course, propaganda.

phantom_of_cato··on Roman Numerals
The most interesting exotic numeral systems I know of are Cistercian numerals [1] and Indic [2] and Ottoman [3] Siyaq numbers. The latter two were even added to Unicode 14.0 [3][4], but not many fonts support them.
