phantom784··on Man develops rare condition after ChatGPT query over stopping eating salt
But is the connection of neurons in our brains any more than a statistical model implemented with cells rather than silicon?
phantom784··on Honey has now lost 4M Chrome users after shady tactics were revealed
I don't think it exists today, but someone could make a crowdsourced extension like SponsorBlock. That also eliminate the concern about hiding promo codes for companies who pay.
phantom784··on Avoid ISP Routers (2024)
We we offered $10/month to use their modem + unlimited, or $30/month to use your own modem unlimited.

We actually don't use that much data though, so just went with the data cap and our own modem, and never went over.

This was in the Seattle area.

phantom784··on Bypass DeepSeek censorship by speaking in hex
When I tested the online model, it would write an answer about "censored" events, and then I'd see the answer get replaced with "Sorry, that’s beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else." So I think they must have another layer on top of the actual model that's reviewing the model and censoring it.
phantom784··on Next stop: Miami
Probably also a legal requirement to run them during rain, even if it's not actually needed for the self-driving cars to work.
phantom784··on Exploring 120 years of timezones (2021)
Our team has members in every US timezone.

I find I'll often try and use relative times in conversation, e.g. "after the stand-up" or "at the top of the hour" rather than specifying a wall clock time.

phantom784··on IKEA launches secondhand marketplace to compete with eBay
If I'm moving a long distance (which I've done a few times in my life so far), I usually try to sell as much furniture as possible rather than moving it with me.

It's already easier to sell Ikea furniture as people will search for a specific Ikea item that they're looking for.

If Ikea makes this process even easier, that's all the more reason to prefer Ikea furniture.

phantom784··on HP discontinues online-only LaserJet printers in response to backlash
For me it's infrequent enough that I'll just go the the library if I need to print.
phantom784··on DoorDash and Pizza Arbitrage (2020)
Odds are they get a different driver every time they do this.
phantom784··on DoorDash and Pizza Arbitrage (2020)
There could be some truth to this based on the vehicle you drive.

The IRS gives a flat per-mile deduction, which is an estimate of fuel, repair, maintenance, and depreciation costs. If your actual vehicle expenses are lower, then you are making more money than your taxable income.

phantom784··on ICQ will stop working from June 26
I made a point to memorize my wife's and my parents' cell numbers, just in case I'm ever in a situation where I don't have a phone and need to reach them (like if I got robbed or something).
phantom784··on New Intermediate Certificates
Interesting that they wish to discourage key pinning. This is pretty commonly used by apps to make them harder to reverse engineer. It prevents you from installing your own cert in the system's trust store and then using that to man-in-the-middle the app's communication with its backend.
phantom784··on Boeing 777 loses tire while taking off from SF, crushing cars on the ground
But its destination was in Japan.

Logistically, I'd think it'd be easier to have the plane return to SFO (potentially after burning off fuel) rather than going to LAX.

phantom784··on Hertz to sell 20k EVs in shift back to gas-powered cars
On a recent trip, I reserved a gas car, but at the airport they tried to give me an EV. I went to the counter and asked for a gas car instead, since the place I was staying didn't have charging, and I didn't want to spend my vacation figuring out EV charging for the first time.

I would've considered the EV if I knew ahead of time, so I could've researched the charging situation before the trip.

phantom784··on Age verification is incompatible with the internet
I don't think that age verification is a good idea. But I don't think the counter-argument that "parents can just monitor their kids' devices" really holds water - there's still plenty of ways around it.
phantom784··on Age verification is incompatible with the internet
Plus, a minor could use their friends' devices. Their parents may not have set up any controls on those devices.
phantom784··on Mickey, Disney, and the public domain: A 95-year love triangle
Perhaps trademark law could help? E.g. Netflix can make their One Piece reboot without permission, but it has to be named in a way that makes it clear it's not licensed from the original creator.
phantom784··on Apple cuts off Beeper Mini's access
There were a lot of complaints that websites which never had to bother with certificates before now had to set one up (and pay for one). Though that's now largely solved by Lets Encrypt.
phantom784··on Canada's surging cost of living fuels reverse immigration
They're still immigrants. They're moving to the US, not returning to their home country.
phantom784··on Fukuoka court rules ban on dual nationality is constitutional
It's effectively a legally enshrined global class system.

While I don't think it's practical to just abolish the concept overnight, I do think it's ultimately the direction we should try and move in. The freedom of movement the EU offers is a step in this direction, and something I'd like to see more of.

phantom784··on Fukuoka court rules ban on dual nationality is constitutional
Can you share what country you want to give up citizenship from? It's hard to imagine that being stateless would be preferable in most cases.
phantom784··on Fukuoka court rules ban on dual nationality is constitutional
How does China figure it out?
phantom784··on Fukuoka court rules ban on dual nationality is constitutional
Sounds like it's far from automatic. (Well, perhaps "legally" you automatically lose it, but there's no system that actually tells Japan that one of their citizens has gotten another citizenship.)

She became a U.S. citizen in 2004.

After traveling back and forth between her home countries with both nationalities for years, she was flagged as being a dual citizen in 2017 — first at a passport office in Tokyo, where her passport was confiscated and her application rejected, and then by airport immigration officials when they realized she was exiting Japan with an American passport that had no entrance stamp.

So it took them 13 years to figure this out, and if she were actively trying to conceal her US citizenship, could probably have held both indefinitely.

phantom784··on What if mass storage were free? – George Copeland (1980) [pdf]
If it's important, you don't want to just write it to a hard drive and chuck it in a closet.
phantom784··on Why TSA's Implementation of Facial Recognition Is More Dangerous Than You Think
True - I suppose the "backup" would be either a physical ID or whatever they do to verify your identity when you don't have an ID.
phantom784··on Why TSA's Implementation of Facial Recognition Is More Dangerous Than You Think
Then the airlines should be doing the ID checks. But they don't bother, because the TSA basically does it for them.

Pretty sure the stated reason for the TSA checking IDs is to keep people on the no-fly list from flying. (Worth nothing that the no-fly list is not without its problems). It also allows trusted traveler programs to work.

phantom784··on Why TSA's Implementation of Facial Recognition Is More Dangerous Than You Think
The article mentions a "one to many" system which is exactly this - it compares you to every face in the database and decides who you are, eliminating the need to show physical ID.

Unless both twins are flying on the same day, you could solve this by rejecting matches of people who don't hold a boarding pass for that airport.

Or you could just require a physical ID as backup if the system can't return a match (due to identical twins or otherwise).

phantom784··on From airlines to ticket sellers, companies fight U.S. to keep junk fees
Not including sales tax kind of makes sense, because it varies so much state to state (and often within the state). This allows companies to advertise one price nationwide.
phantom784··on datetime.utcnow() is now deprecated
> Why can't they, for instance, simply declare that school/offices open at 10am instead of 9am for six designated months every year instead of imposing this adjustment on the entire world.

If they did that, you'd still be stuck shifting your schedule when they change their working hours.

phantom784··on Hacking ADHD: Strategies for the modern developer
This is me now, but I used to be great at reading books as a kid/teenager.
