phakding··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
Thing is though from the other side even if you have good intentions, you still have more then one people to think about. So your loyalties are split. For an employee, it's only one entity to be loyal to.
phakding··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
In my second job, the company was not doing well financially. They stopped 401k match, reduce salary by 5% across the board etc. I still stayed because I liked the work and the people. Then they started laying off people who were with the company for 25+ years. One of them was my good friend. An asian guy who worked day and night and treated his work like his baby. He had two kids in medical school and a house with mortgage. He also was the only bread winner in family. I could see the pain and anxiety in his eyes. He had to sell everything and move back with his family to be with his brother and extended family.

That was it for me. I found a much better paying job within two weeks and never looked back.

The next company I worked for laid people off on schedule even though they were growing like crazy. In my four years there they went from 2b to 6b, but laid off many employees every year or so.

phakding··on Ask HN: What was the best decision you made in your career?
There is no loyalty in business. Keep your loyalty for your family and may be friends, not for the company you work for. The company will never be loyal back. Have an opportunity to make more or work more interesting? Grab it with both hands. If you are 99.99% of the workforce, you are not indispensable no matter how much you think you are.
phakding··on Motorola Razr V3 Cellphone: The trend-setter that shouldn't have existed
Can you not copy contacts to Sim and then copy to the new phone? I remember doing that with multiple dummy phones before I bought my first smart phone.
phakding··on Ask HN: How do I become less arrogant?
You probably need to remember the proverb, "empty vessels make the most noise". Also the dunning Kruger effect. It is possible that you are way too confident/cocky because you don't know much.

I was cocky when I started out at my first job because I knew latest and greatest. But after working for years and running into people who are way more knowledgeable and smart, I came to know my place. You will too.

phakding··on Ask HN: Is learning foreign languages worth the hassle?
Besides the obvious benefits to the brain, imagine you are traveling around the world and being able to effectively communicate with people without the crutch of English language. That feels amazing and very very useful.

People open up to you if you can ramble off even couple of sentences in their language. It is absolutely worth the hassle for a traveler.

But if you live in and don't see yourself ever leaving bumfuckville, Alabama, then there's no point.

phakding··on [dead]
Great! Right time to get into fitness and lose those extra 139 lbs. You are at 42.6 bmi which is categorized as class III obese (very severely obese).

Cheers!

phakding··on Amazon launches Part Finder, using technology acquired from Partpic in 2016
I haven't used it, but hopefully it works. I work a ton on my car and many times, I used to run to a specialty sears hardware store which had four long isles full of screws, nuts and bolts. I have spent literally hours browing for screws and nut/bolts. Unfortunately the store closed last year and I have nowhere else to go.
phakding··on Ask HN: What was the one book that you read and it actually changed your life?
Seriously?
phakding··on Ask HN: Returning to university as an experienced developer
I believe formal classes in good universities certainly help. You end up learning things that you would think are too boring or not directly related to your job. But in my 15 years of working and dozens of interviews, no one ever asked me about my courses or anything related to my education. I never asked anyone I interviewed about what they lerned in college.
phakding··on Clojure is cool
> In my experience ease of reading code is not a function of verbosity, but a function of familiarity.

You would think so, sure. I used to write Perl code and I was extremely familiar with it and it used to be pretty easy for me to hack a script. Going back after couple of months and trying to understand it though, was a totally different animal.

You can argue that it was my fault for writing bad Perl code, but ask any old farts who ever had to write Perl.

phakding··on Clojure is cool
I like verbosity in programming language. It becomes pretty easy to read the code, compared to lambdas or other concise languages.

If you are not working for a startup, majority of the time, you will be maintaining legacy code or bug fixing. I would take easily understandable verbose code over "clever" concise code every time.

phakding··on Time to look beyond Oracle's JDK
They are now using openJDK and modifying the source code themselves, so no, that's not the policy.
phakding··on Time to look beyond Oracle's JDK
If you are stretching limits of java, then you would need support because that knowledge base isn't available easily. I worked for a company that had performance engineers from sun on site helping us with performance issues.
phakding··on Smelvetica – Helvetica the way it was intended to be
I am not up on my xkcd like some of you fine folks.
phakding··on Smelvetica – Helvetica the way it was intended to be
I am a font snob and was about to leave a strongly worded comment for suggesting this font. Your comment saved me for making a fool of myself.
phakding··on Ask HN: How do I consciously improve my reading and retention skills?
When I want to make sure my kids understand what they read, I stop after a page and ask couple of questions. Questions that can't be answered directly by reading the text, but by understanding. You can try this in yourself.

For retention, the more times you recall the same information, the more it is ingrained in your brain. Recalling literally builds neural pathways.

phakding··on Firefox 62.0 Released
Sorry, but your analogy doesn't make much sense.

Firefox is fast, modern, feature rich, and, free browser. Your grievance is about missing some feature that you use.

The right analogy would be that the church is providing perfectly nutritious food that majority of the people eat, but a homeless guy is griping about not having wine with the meal. After all the homeless guy is old now and he is used to having wine with meals.

phakding··on India court legalises gay sex in landmark ruling
> In the case of gay-shaming, the obvious common cause is evolutionary: It's people trying to have more grandkids.

I have to disagree. I don't think people who opposr and hate gay people are doing it for evolutionary purposes. I haven't met anybody who thinks this guy is gay which meand he won't be making any kids, so let's hate him. Hate comes from much more fundamental place than that.

For majority of people it's not "normal" hence different. And for majority what's different is scary. The same reason why immigrants of different skin color than majority population are hated.

The same reason applies to extremely short, extremely tall, people with deformities, person with vitiligo in black/brown countries etc are treated differently, made fun of.

phakding··on Ask HN: How do you make sound come out of your desktop?
Either Bose SoundLink speaker or wireless headphones. I hate wires, so I prefer wireless solutions.
phakding··on Firefox 62.0 Released
May be it's because I come from a different culture, I am not so entitled. Firefox is free, as in speech and beer. It also doesn't phone home with your private data as a payload. That Is good enough for me to be happy. If something doesn't work for me, I find a workaround or a plug-in and am happy again. If there's something needs to be fixed, I write bug reports.

So it might seem to you that no power user could possibly be totally happy, I am happy to prove you wrong.

phakding··on Latency Numbers Every Programmer Should Know
> CPU and data intensive heavy lifting is rarely done in such programs

How could you make such a blanket statement? is bashing java the new hipster thing to do in programming world nowadays?

phakding··on Firefox 62.0 Released
What would be an example of a "big single page app"?
phakding··on Firefox 62.0 Released
With all these posters complaining, am I the only one who is totally satisfied with Firefox? I never had many issues using firefox. I did use Chrome briefly, but came back to firefox. If it matters, I mostly use firefox on Debian Linux and am also not a web developer.
phakding··on Latency Numbers Every Programmer Should Know
Not sure what very low level is, but if you are writing anything with low latency requirements you need to be cognizant of these things. As someone mentioned, using an array over a list helps CPU in memory striding. Cache misses are expensive.
phakding··on Ask HN: I'm 40 this year, and have depression. Any words of wisdom?
This is what I realized; no matter how much you love your work/profession when you started out, it's impossible to keep that flame of curiosity and interest after 15-20 years of work. You need to get away from it frequently to rekindle that flame. Find hobbies that have nothing to do with technology or computers or programming like playing instruments, hiking, running, knitting or whatever else that interests you.

I hardly ever login to Gmail, as I pull emails over imap. But I switched long time ago because I am always excited to use the new UI.
