ph4evers··on A succinct email in just a subject line
I received one when I asked for a quote after I didn’t respond for 24 hours with “What do you think of the price??”

I went for the competitor

ph4evers··on Kill your Feeds – Stop letting algorithms dictate what you think
Yes totally! I like Reddit because you can pick your own subreddits but even that can be flooded by ragebait/clickbait
ph4evers··on Bankman-Fried talks about support for Republicans
Banking on paying his way out of jail
ph4evers··on Flevoland
Born and raised. Not really a glorious area but at least the soil is great for potatoes.
ph4evers··on Ask HN: Is Cursor deleting working code for you too or is it just me?
One of the devs just announced an upcoming fix for version 0.47 on Reddit. Seems like they have some problems with integrating Sonnet 3.7 in Cursor.
ph4evers··on Ask HN: Will vibe coding better motivate students to learn to read and write?
I like the idea of creating some kind of old-school text-based dungeon crawler to practise English. That way you are forced to at least write a bit of text, or alter suggestions of a certain story.
ph4evers··on 1/4 of startups in YC current cohort have almost entirely AI-generated codebases
I'm not surprised. There is a complete meltdown in the Cursor subreddit because some update made code generation worse in "agent" mode. It seems that there are many people completely relying on prompting without reviewing any code at all.

I'm working on it! The biggest blocker is the reading direction but that should be solvable. Both AssemblyAI and DeepL support it.

Thanks a lot for trying!

I tried to upload some Korean videos and indeed it fails on transcription quality. I've built in a check to filter out low confidence videos. I'm using AssemblyAI under the hood but I think it is too strict. I'll investigate.

"Quality control" is now simply a confidence score check and a warning that translations can be wrong. As long as it is mostly right I believe there can be value. However, the experience quickly degrades if it is wrong on every sentence.

EDIT:

I'll try to deploy a new version today. I'm too scared to do it right now because I already brought the server down by building a Docker container. I'm not hosting on a super large node.

Thanks! abal.ai looks great!

I'm using AssemblyAI and DeepL under the hood. I recently switched from a provider that didn't support Hindi. I'll update it soon to support it.

ph4evers··on I Conditioned Myself to Fail
Very much relatable. I have dozens of high effort GitHub repos that I didn’t touch after launching it. For me it works by sparring with friends to really grasp if something is a viable long term idea or not and then stick to it.
ph4evers··on How to give a senior leader feedback without getting fired
I’m too Dutch for this kind of indirectness. Say it without the fluff and not in public and everything will be fine.
ph4evers··on Tackling Robot Alignment Issues
Introduction to the computer vision stack used at TETMET to correct automatically for robot alignment issues.
ph4evers··on GPT-3.5 crashes when it thinks about useRalativeImagePath too much
I just cleaned my phone screen and only now realize it was a background.
ph4evers··on Memray: Python memory profiler
This is great! I managed to spot some inefficiënties in my ML inference pipeline by generating some flame graphs using Memray.
ph4evers··on The costs of microservices (2020)
I still don’t fully understand what makes something a monolith.

For example, I have a big app which is serving 90% of the API traffic. I also have three separate services, one for a camera, one to run ML inference, and one to drive a laser welding process. They are split up because they all need specific hardware and preferably a separate process (one per gpu for example).

Is this a monolothic app or a micro service architecture?

ph4evers··on When I stopped trying to self-optimize, I got better
Except for tar. But there I use the mnemonic “xtrackt ze files”
ph4evers··on Always Bump Downwards (2019)
It is also used in WASM. I guess to increase memory safety
ph4evers··on Is the ChatGPT and Bing AI boom already over?
I agree, after a while you get a feeling for its pros and cons and how to leverage it.
ph4evers··on Is the ChatGPT and Bing AI boom already over?
Doesn’t seem to be “over”, I know many people that use it on a daily basis. The initial hype might be cooling off a bit which is not strange.
ph4evers··on Scrum is a cancer
Erik Meijer has a beautiful video saying basically the same: “Agile is a cancer we have to eliminate from the industry”. I believe the original video also had this title.

ph4evers··on TODO apps are meant for robots
My todo app is in iOS Notes, which I remove once I’m done. Works to reduce the cognitive load, is flexible and synchronizes between devices.
ph4evers··on Beware of Bun.js
Seems a bit of a general theme. Not long ago I saw an article claiming Bun was faster than Rust Hyper webserver, but the author forgot to turn off debug mode. Article is gone now: https://medium.com/cooking-with-bun/hello-world-performance-...
ph4evers··on I've started using Firefox and can never go back to Chrome
I really enjoy Firefox. Only time I use Chrome is for Google Meet, that really sucks in Firefox
