pgtan··on UC terminates subscriptions with Elsevier in push for open access
Out of curiosity I went to Elsevier and looked at random article from an economic journal (open access):

https://ac.els-cdn.com/S1303070118300945/1-s2.0-S13030701183...

The 3B2 PDF looks much better than a Word file and especially the references are all clean, linked, and downloadable as a BibTeX file. There is also a HTML version of the work. I can see definitely a lot of added value to the scientific document there.

Typesetting, proofreading, copy editing, indexing, graphics editing etc. come in mind.

Just look at random "not so well formed" Word file like for example:

https://arxiv.org/pdf/1902.07133.pdf

Not commenting the bad typography of text, math, tables, etc., just try to estimate the effort for converting the references in well-formed and validated BibTeX entries.

pgtan··on Systemd as tragedy
systemd broke UNIX. Everything that worked before, now is a mine field. Last week I had a SLES virtual machine refusing to boot, no network, just emergency shell. The reason was a forgotten line in fstab (without nofail option of course), so systemd couldn't mount some file system. Coming from Gentoo, this is just unbelievable.
pgtan··on Gömböc
There was a lecture on the long science night fest here about the Gömböc.¹ A very interesting observation accompanying the idea of the Gömböc is, that the number of stable and unstable equilibrium points decreases, the more a stone travels along a river.

pgtan··on Vintage “Soviet Santa” Postcards Were Propaganda for the Space Race (2018)
Not even a single Снегурочка on this cards? No concept of women in the bright space future!?
pgtan··on Comparing Pythagorean triples in C++, D, and Rust
There is a paper by Josef Rukavicka called "Dickson's Method for Generating Pythagorean Triples Revisited"[1]. It is a very nice proof without words. Based on it, the Project Euler solution was almost an oneliner in Prolog.

pgtan··on Tokyo Wants People to Stand on Both Sides of the Escalator
My explanation is, the escalators and elevators are the "little socialism" for the people: they provide free service and in order to consume it fully, nobody moves. I have friends running marathons but still using elevators when on work.
pgtan··on Tokyo Wants People to Stand on Both Sides of the Escalator
Not exactly my observations, to put it politely, here in East Germany, Leipzig.
pgtan··on Tokyo Wants People to Stand on Both Sides of the Escalator
“Walking on escalators may lead to accidents caused by collisions or luggage.”

I'm sensing zero-risk bias, typical for modern western societies. For me, there is absolutely no reason to stand on the escalator, unless handicapped of course.

pgtan··on Little Languages
Wonder, how everyone forget BibTeX, the (stack based) language for formating bibligraphy databases:

pgtan··on A fullscreen desktop application resembling a sci-fi computer interface
A bunch of xterm active icons on a purist fvwm look just that impressive

+ai This option enables active icon support if that feature was compiled into xterm. This is equivalent to setting the vt100 resource activeIcon to "true".

pgtan··on Germany plans €3B in AI investments
> It can work out well and it can fail.

No, it will fail, as every German project of this kind failed. Someone will get rich, the project will close after some years. The overrated Germany is socialism 2.0.

pgtan··on The Art of Prolog, Second Edition
I went from logic puzzles to Prolog and the CLPFD lib was a great help to achieve results even as novice.
pgtan··on Description and implementation of the core Knuth-Plass line-wrapping algorithm
I wish there were also other attempts to create a paragraph breaking algorithms. For example one, which limits the total amount of white space on a line. Because, if you have a line with many short words on it, and all the glue is max stretched even not exceeding the allowed value, the line looks nevertheless somewhat holey.
pgtan··on Can the EU become another AI superpower?
this sounds like a PRAWDA article during the Perestroyka.

But of course, this socialism will be much more successful than the old one. Just need more state money and state initiatives and state regulations, and so on.

pgtan··on Can the EU become another AI superpower?
Finally, the new Euro-socialism "discovered" its old enemy on the other side of the ocean again.

Just searching for "VW Steuern" reveals:

https://www.google.com/search?q=vw+steuern&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

"Volkswagen nutzt Luxemburg zum Steuernsparen"

"VW darf Milliarden-Bußgeld teilweise von Steuer absetzen"

"Der VW-Konzern nutzt ein fragwürdiges Steuersparmodell"

"Grüne wollen wissen: Wo zahlt Volkswagen wie viel Steuern"

"VW-Skandal: Steuern hinterzogen"

"Steueroasen: Wie deutsche Großkonzerne den Steuerzahler um ..."

pgtan··on Can the EU become another AI superpower?
this is how they screwed the foreign companies on the insolvency of AirBerlin in favor of Lufthansa.

Harvey's lectures are more practical (impressive beautiful Scheme code), also cover some "new" concepts like map-reduce etc.

I completely agree with you. There is a screaming hypocrisy here.
pgtan··on In Germany, the use of cash has become a proxy for concerns about trust, privacy

pgtan··on Buses Need Our Love More Than Ever
> This does not work if you want to speed up routes in rush hour, because people will demand stops at every block.

Actually, this is exactly how Marshrutkas work, at least in Sofia/Bulgaria. They do not stop on "every block", they stop only if they are not full enough or someone wants to get off. But normaly, this persons tell their destination early enough to the driver, so he or she can plan better the few stops. Nowadays most people prefer the Metro over the Marshrutkas though.

pgtan··on Buses Need Our Love More Than Ever
> You can't make it stop at every block

a solution for this is kind of "stop on demand"

pgtan··on GIMP 2.10.0 Released
Wondering, why there is still no GaaS (GIMP as a Sevice) Scheme/REST/Cloud-Functional offer.
pgtan··on Bulgaria played a vital role in introducing yogurt to the West
"creamier" means almost always that this product has nothing to do with fermentation and work of microbial cultures, but was made thick by adding milk powder, gelatin and sugar substitutes. The opposite of healthy, not to mention the sh*ty taste.
pgtan··on Bulgaria played a vital role in introducing yogurt to the West
I don't know how it is in the US, but in Germany very few labels on the tub declare if there are any live cultures in the yogurt, and no one with the amount of that bacteria (like in BG). So one needs to develop a special taste to find out, if the yogurt was made thick by the work of bacteria or just by adding milk powder, gelatin etc.
