pgtan··on Graveyards Are Surprising Hotspots for Biodiversity
It's simply the distance, I suppose. Poaching in the backyard is much easier than going long distances and crossing streets.
pgtan··on Graveyards Are Surprising Hotspots for Biodiversity
I'm sure, cats and dogs owner will find thousand explanations why the ban of domestic dogs and cats on graveyards is not a relevant cause for the biodiversity.
pgtan··on Living Like It's 99: No Social Media, No Smartphone

pgtan··on Uniwidth Typefaces for Interface Design
Good crafted monospaced (especially so called office-) fonts do not differ. There is no need for the term "uniwidth" at all.
pgtan··on Three Mathematicians We Lost in 2020
Surprisingly for me, the passing of John D. Barrow went so unresonated. He has some great books about the idea of the mathematical universe and his lectures (on YT) are quite interesting.
pgtan··on Ask HN: What's the best paper you've read in 2020?
This year discovery of Spinosaurus' tail changed significant the picture of that specie's look and behaviour.

Logo is such an elegant programming language!
pgtan··on Why I'm Tcl-Ish

in (UCB)LOGO:

pgtan··on Ask HN: Resources to encourage teen on becoming computer engineer?
My kid started playing with Lightbot[1]. It teaches recursion, loops, conditionals, and is fun. I would recommend LOGO as an elegant functional programming language, if you want something besides the usual ugly python for-loops; Berkeley logo for quick REPL, NetLogo for more advanced concepts as agents for example.

pgtan··on ‘Electric mud’ teems with new, mysterious bacteria
The Black Sea is rich on hydrogen sulfide. Googling on cable bacteria and Black Sea showed this:

Cable bacteria can limit sulfide release by promoting iron oxide formation in sediments.[1]

[...] we used laboratory incubations to assess whether cable bacteria can establish in iron (Fe) monosulphide-poor coastal Black Sea sediment and to determine the impact of their activity on the cycling of Fe, phosphorus (P) and sulphur (S). [...] we show that the enrichments in Fe oxides induced by cable bacteria are located in a thin subsurface layer of 0.3 mm. We show that similar subsurface layers enriched in Fe and P are also observed at field sites where cable bacteria were recently active and little bioturbation occurs.[2]

pgtan··on Recursive, a free variable font for code and UI, now on Google Fonts
Since I have to do lots of TeX editing in emacs, every "coding" font disqualifies, if it doesn't have at least polytonic greek and cyrillic glyphs. So, misc-fixed forever!

pgtan··on Merge tag 'inclusive-terminology' into Linux kernel
I really like the gender duality of the russian and the other slavic languages: п_зда/п_здец, х_й/х_йня, etc. And so there is a masculine pendant of к_рва in them, AFAIK.
pgtan··on Scanimage: Scan from the Command Line
There are scanbd, scanbuttond, which poll the usb events and trigger a script, if a scanner button was pressed:

pgtan··on Bulgaria writes new chapter in long story of demographic decline
this is because the Bulgarians, unlike the Germans for example, are capable of (social) self-criticism and self-irony.
pgtan··on Bulgaria writes new chapter in long story of demographic decline
Emigrant is not the right word. Most of the Bulgarians living abroad, including me, keep their property in Bulgaria and don't sell. They don't cut their connections in the home land, and many of them return at the end of the day.
pgtan··on Bulgaria writes new chapter in long story of demographic decline
This is because of the exported feedstocks. If you go to Bulgaria (or any other Balkan country) you will see the land drown in german goods.
pgtan··on Bulgaria writes new chapter in long story of demographic decline
Yeah, well, I don't think that mafia and corruption in a not so rich state are worse than (Euro-) socialism and redistribution on the current Western European scale.
pgtan··on Booting a 486 from floppy with the most up-to-date stable Linux kernel
Modern days Linux kernel requires a bootloader, as seen in the video. In the old days, you could dd the kernel to the floppy disk and use rdev to point to the root partition to start after loading the kernel.
pgtan··on Ridiculous Math Problems
Which reminds me of the riddles in Yerofeyev's Moscow—Petushki (sorry, only in russian, my russian and my english are too bad to translate)

And my favorite:

pgtan··on Ask HN: Recommend a maths book for a teenager?
"Uncle Petros and Goldbach's Conjecture" by Apostolos Doxiadis.

Not a math book, but a really well written, full with math history novel about the value of mathematics in a human's life. It gives you the reason, why you should know (higher) maths, even if you will won't become a mathematician.

pgtan··on History of Logo
Berkeley Logo has higher order mapping functions like "cascade" and "crossmap" which I miss in modern Emacs Lisp with its countless packages for example.

If you want something more fancier, NetLogo provides agent based parallelism which is more suitable for games.

The only thing I miss in (Berkeley) Logo is a better fill function.

pgtan··on History of Logo
You lucky! My kid's school teaches Delphi/TurboPascal (8. grade, first programming language course), which they replaced with Lazarus unable to install Delphi on modern PCs.
pgtan··on History of Logo
Logo rules big times!
pgtan··on Printing Presses Are Giant GPUs
It's not GPU, it's called RIP - Raster Image Processor. And yes, one of the benefits of print is, that it is already pre-rendered. Waiting for a PDF reader/browser to show a complex vector image is just annoying.
