pgreenwood··on CityEngine: Build a Digital Twin of Your City
Anyone know of any good use cases for a 3D models or simulations at the city scale apart from eye candy, e.g. public presentations of future urban development?

I worked in this space for a while and I never found much of a use case for serious applications of 3D over say an ordinary 2D GIS. Ended up building applications using PostGIS openstreetmap etc that were a lot more effective.

pgreenwood··on How does perspective work in pictures?
Right, this is how I understand it too. Is it not true if you took two photos of the same subject, with say a 24mmm lens and 70mm lens, and the then cropped and enlarged the image from the 24mm lens shot, you'd end up with the same image with the same perspective?
pgreenwood··on Why Retaining Walls Collapse
Fair enough, many are ugly, but I generally quite like the way they look. Lots of scope for different shapes and colours and textures. They can be blended in with the local geology via the choice of rocks. You can put benches or pathways on them, or soil on them and grow plants, or even grow mosses and lichens.

pgreenwood··on Stress does turn hair gray, and it’s reversible
Yes, it can happen due to alpoecia areata which can be stress related. I had a beard hair turn white almost overnight. I am normally clean shaven but a large section of my facial hair fell out at once and almost immediately grow back white. I think it took a few days but seemed to happen overnight. Also alopecia can tend to attack just coloured hair, so if you're salt and pepper and lose all the coloured you can appear to go white overnight.
pgreenwood··on Stress does turn hair gray, and it’s reversible
About two years ago I woke up to find 40% of my facial hair gone. It was due to alopecia areata, and I was going through a very stressful period. It mostly grew back but completely white (Funnily I'm left with a narrow black section in the moustache area, so if I don't shave I look like Hitler).

Anyway in the last month or so some coloured hair has started to come back, hopefully it continues.

pgreenwood··on Software is eating the car
I'm reminded of the joke "If Microsoft Made Cars" from the 90s.

And 25 years later here we are...

' For all of us who feel only the deepest love and affection for the way computers have enhanced our lives, read on. At a recent computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated, "If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving $25.00 cars that got 1,000 miles to the gallon."

In response to Bill's comments, General Motors issued a press release stating: If GM had developed technology like Microsoft, we would all be driving cars with the following characteristics:

1. For no reason whatsoever, your car would crash twice a day.

2. Every time they repainted the lines in the road, you would have to buy a new car.

3. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason. You would have to pull to the side of the road, close all of the windows, shut off the car, restart it, and reopen the windows before you could continue.

For some reason you would simply accept this.

4. Occasionally, executing a maneuver such as a left turn would cause your car to shut down and refuse to restart, in which case you would have to reinstall the engine.

5. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast and twice as easy to drive - but would run on only five percent of the roads.

6. The oil, water temperature, and alternator warning lights would all be replaced by a single "This Car Has Performed An Illegal Operation" warning light.

7. The airbag system would ask "Are you sure?" before deploying.

8. Occasionally, for no reason whatsoever, your car would lock you out and refuse to let you in until you simultaneously lifted the door handle, turned the key and grabbed hold of the radio antenna.

9. Every time a new car was introduced car buyers would have to learn how to drive all over again because none of the controls would operate in the same manner as the old car.

10. You'd have to press the "Start" button to turn the engine off." '

pgreenwood··on Ask HN: What entry-level telescope should I choose?
I got an 8" Dobsonian about ten years ago at still am far from exhausting the possibilities. I got the Bintel (GSO) brand which seemed a little better, came with three eyepieces decent focusser and finder, and moon filter.

You can move the 8" Dob around with one person and fits across the back seat of a small car. You manually push it around so you learn to star hop, and learn the constellations more than you would with an electronic GOTO.

Only last year upgraded the eyepieces to Baader Morpheus. Gives good claer views of Saturn & rings, cassini division, Jupiter & great red spot, equatorial bands, Uranus, Neptune, Messier objects etc etc.

A 6" dob is a good option for planetary viewing too and arguably better than 8" in some regards (a bit smaller and more forgiving on cheap eyepieces). 8" is better for deep space objects of course.

Consider a 10" dob for deep space, but they start to get a bit large to move around.

I support the idea of UBI in principle, but I think it needs to be combined with a land value tax in order to work as intended. Rents are charged at the highest the market will bear, so the UBI could just flow into the hands of landlords, and the people who it is supposed to help being no better off.
