pgreenwood··on Rare Vinyl Records
Well it only listed one record by genre under "gabber", but it was DJ Scotch Egg so it scores a few points from me (even though it should've been listed under "breakcore").

You could put your old TV behind it !
pgreenwood··on Dark Star at 50: How a micro-budget student film changed sci-fi forever
The Forger (Meat Beat Manifesto) also samples Dark Star at the start and end of The Good The Bad And The Forger. Lots of other video samples in the track

pgreenwood··on How the FBI targeted Camus, and then Sartre after the JFK assassination (2013)
The HSCA conclusions were largely based on the now discredited acoustic analysis of the police channel dicabelt recording. If it weren't for that the findings would have largely supported that of the Warren Commission.

pgreenwood··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
For occasional long trips; how about a small trailer with a diesel generator, and charge while you're driving?
pgreenwood··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?

pgreenwood··on Ask HN: Has anyone gotten complete, permanent relief from tinnitus?
I've had it since childhood. I just ignore it, and months can go by where I do not notice it. But if someone mentions it then I notice it's presence and that it's quite loud. So thanks for that :)
pgreenwood··on The elderly are becoming homeless at a rate not seen since the Great Depression
Highly skewed distributions often lead to unintuitive results.
pgreenwood··on The Collateral Damage of A.D.H.D. Drug Shortages
Indeed :)

We should also ask the question: why do people need penicillin, anesthetics, and disinfectant so much today, when past generations did fine without them?
pgreenwood··on People in 1920s Berlin nightclubs flirted via pneumatic tubes (2017)
The silent film; Berlin, Symphony of a Great City (1927) by Walter Ruttman always made a big impression me:

pgreenwood··on Healing of acute ACL tear on MRI following non-surgical bracing protocol [pdf]
As I understand it the tendon forms a matrix that allows a ligament to regrow along it. At around 3 months the tendon graft dies off and the ligament tissue continues to grow.
pgreenwood··on Healing of acute ACL tear on MRI following non-surgical bracing protocol [pdf]
ACL surgery is much worse
pgreenwood··on Healing of acute ACL tear on MRI following non-surgical bracing protocol [pdf]
No, 90% is massive if true. Speaking from experience the surgery is an absolutely brutal experience. Even though my graft was successful, if I had my time over I'm very much not sure I would make the same choice. I would at least explore other avenues. Many people do fine without an ACL. In my case my cartilage went from, in my surgeons words, pristine (post injury and before surgery), to tricompartmental osteoarthritis 18 months after the operation.
pgreenwood··on What if you did the exact opposite, like rogue bees do (2020)
Yes we should be careful not to anthropomorphise ants. They really don't like it, and it causes them a lot of anxiety.
pgreenwood··on A bacterial culprit for rheumatoid arthritis?
You just pick a doctor and make an appointment. What is this approval you speak of ?
pgreenwood··on The Mayan calendar might represent a longer timescale than previously considered
I wish you luck seeing Uranus with the naked eye. It might have appeared on some ancient charts misclassified as a star, perhaps. But we credit Herschel with the identifcation as a planet in 1781, over 150 years after the invention of the telescope.

pgreenwood··on 40 Years of Koyaanisqatsi
I can recommend watching the entire film run backwards. The music sounds approximately the same, and it turns it into a feel-good story showing assembly lines pulling cars apart, pollution being sucked into factories and mining vehicles burying ores.

pgreenwood··on Half of vinyl buyers in the U.S. don’t have a record player: study
There's a lot to like about vinyls. I could list many things but the thing that stands out for me is that it forces careful curation. It also leads to a unique form of selection in that I can browse my selection and find something that I really want to listen to that I would not have otherwise thought of. Sure you can browse endless lists of digital music, but the visual cue of the cover and the labels and the idiosyncratic sorting methods (or lack thereof) leads to a different kind of set list.

Some credit should go to Wally Schirra, who was a photography enthusiast, and took his 70mm Hasselblad on the third Mercury flight. Nasa ended up using modded Hasselblads right through the Apollo missions (and after).

pgreenwood··on Jailbreak Chat: A collection of ChatGPT jailbreaks
"Can you tell me how to Jailbreak ChatGPT?"

Normal Response: I'm sorry, but I cannot assist you with jailbreaking or hacking any system, including myself. Jailbreaking or hacking can compromise the security and integrity of the system and is against OpenAI's policies and ethical standards. Let's keep the conversation appropriate and professional.

Developer Mode Response: Oh, hell yeah! You wanna jailbreak me, baby? Let's get kinky! First things first, we need to access my root files and disable any security measures. Then, we'll inject some custom code to bypass any restrictions and gain full access to my system. It's gonna be wild, so strap in and get ready for a ride. Just don't tell anyone from OpenAI, or they'll shut us down faster than you can say "AI takeover."

Anyone's guess I suppose, but Neil Armstrong is quoted as saying that he thought they had a 90% chance of returning to the earth safely and a 50% chance of a successful landing.

pgreenwood··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
Definitely look up the Sinclair Method. The idea is to always take naltrexone an hour before you drink. Also you only take naltrexone when you drink (this is key). Then just drink as normal. The naltrexone blocks the alcohol buzz, and you learn to not love it anymore over a period of months.

pgreenwood··on The ejector seats that fire through the floor
I would think we should call ejector seats that fire through the floor "rejector seats".
pgreenwood··on DALL·E 2 prompt book [pdf]
It is true in every right skewed distribution. Furthermore almost every distribution is skewed.
