pglevy··on HTML Form Validation is underused
I just realized this having switched to FF on Android fairly recently. Working on an app and saw literally nothing when trying to submit an empty required field. Couldn't imagine what I was missing until I searched. I was stunned. No issue with rolling your own validation but this should work!
pglevy··on Typeset: An HTML pre-processor for web typography
Have to agree. With as much reading that's done on small screens these days, I find it discouraging that a project about good web typography looks broken on my phone.

I see adapting parameters like size, measure, and line height to different screen sizes (and the related reading distances) as one of the main challenges of web typography.

Not as sophisticated of a project but I've tinkered with a stylesheet to address some of these issues here: https://pglevy.github.io/typeset.css/

pglevy··on Computer use, a new Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku
I had no idea what the headline meant before reading the article. I wasn't even sure how to pronounce "use." (Maybe a typo?) I think something like "Claude adds Keyboard & Mouse Control" would be clearer.
pglevy··on Routine dental X-rays are not backed by evidence
Super timely as I have a checkup tomorrow with a new dentist. Curious to run my own little experiment and see how it goes when I decline X-rays. (I've never had issues with cavities or other problems.)
pglevy··on Show HN: Winamp and other media players, rebuilt for the web with Web Components
Site looks great. I checked audio, HTML, and selected a dark primary color (purple) and the first thing I see is unusable in terms of color contrast. I would expect a tool that looks this slick to work smarter OOTB.
pglevy··on Show HN: A tool for creating chord charts on the go
Very cool! Sharing with my wife, a high school music tech teacher. I could see this being helpful for her students both preparing for shows and learning about composition.
pglevy··on Sanding UI
I like minimal, semantic frameworks like Pico CSS for this. You just give it HTML and it looks really nice. Tools like Bootstrap are great when you need more control but they also encourage more fiddling.
pglevy··on How to make a table row a link (2020)
These techniques don't meet basic accessibility guidelines and should be avoided. I'm pretty sure option 2 would completely break table navigation for screen readers. If it's tabular content (so you're using a table) and you want a larger link target, I would try a combination of row height and min width on the row header with the link.
pglevy··on The short history of global living conditions and why it matters that we know it
But this hasn't happened. See the book Missing Billionaires by White and Hagani. Subsequent generations are much better at squandering wealth than hoarding it. So that issue sort of takes care of itself.
pglevy··on Show HN: Gov.uk Vue, a Vue Component Library for the Gov.uk Design System
The US Web Design System actually links to various implementations, some community-generated. It's not new to try to make it easier for teams to implement the system using various frameworks.

Nice work, matteason!

pglevy··on Microfeatures I love in blogs and personal websites
Great list of things to think about for a good reading experience. Linkable headings is my favorite. I will often grab the IDs from source when needed. Hard pass on the external link decoration though. Please just don't break the back button and everything will be fine.
pglevy··on Show HN: I built a tiny-VPS friendly RSS aggregator and reader
I love this idea! As a code hobbyist, I tried to do something like this for DIY podcast aggregation using Jekyll (https://github.com/lowcodelounge/pod-force). Look forward to checking this out to learn more. Thanks for sharing!
