This is a common misconception on HN. People with technical backgrounds love structural explanations for things. You see a similar phenomenon in the number of people who believe that the shape of an airfoil is what keeps a plane up. But in fact the main thing driving Airbnb's growth is not price, but that guests are looking for authentic experiences. Price helps, just as lift generated by airfoil shapes does, but it's not what has made Airbnb big.
Here's the first product of Boeing, which built the bottom stage of the Saturn V:
You can't build a database in three months and show it off on Demo Day either, but we've funded many database companies.
You don't need to have shipped by Demo Day. You just need to have achieved enough to convince investors to give you more money. What "enough" means depends on what you're building. Experienced investors know how much they can reasonably expect from each type of company in 3 + n months.
Incidentally, we have battery and AI companies in the current batch.
That seems strange reasoning. Many heroes break laws.
Plus the NSA broke the law worse.
I was thinking of something for ordinary end users. So anything that tells users "This particular parser assumes that the first row of every table is a header row" is ipso facto not what I had in mind, because ordinary end users don't know what a parser is. Or a header row for that matter.
When the Airbnbs came to speak at the last dinner, Brian Chesky said that the 3 months of YC had been the most productive time in their lives.
No, we took the video offline because one of the speakers hadn't realized the talks were being filmed. It will be back once we edit that one out.
